When Yard Waste Disposal Means Recycling And Reuse
We all want to recycle and do our part to save the planet. But not many of us think of yard waste in terms of recycling or reuse. Yet, organic debris is quite recyclable.
Almost everything that grows in or above your outdoor spaces at home can be recycled, reused, or repurposed. In fact, there's no "greener" way to be green with waste and debris.
Yard Waste Disposal: Think Green, Be Green
For starters, let's be clear about one thing: depending on where you live your municipal waste management provider (your garbage company!) may not accept organic yard waste in their recycling bins.
So, it is best to confirm exactly what you can and cannot place in those bins.
Also, depending on where you live, some companies (such as WM) or municipal agencies provide specific recycling bins just for "green waste." And what, exactly, is that?
For example, the folks at WM, or Waste Management, provide these guidelines of acceptable waste materials for their some of their customers:
- Grass
- Weeds
- Green plants
- Tree limbs
- Wood chips
- Dead plants
- Brush
- Garden trimmings
- Leaves
However, the things that you cannot dispose of inside those bins includes non-organic items such as soil and dirt, rocks, concrete and asphalt, nor painted or treated wood waste.
And apparently some difficult to process organic waste items are banned, as well, like palm tree branches, Yucca plants, ice plants, and large branches "more than 5 feet in length, more than 6 inches in diameter or weighing more than 50 lbs."
The good news is that if you have any of the latter items that need to be removed and disposed of properly, your local Junk King team is ready and able to take care of that for you. And, as for the bullet-pointed green waste items listed here, if you have more than you can handle, we'll take that off your hands, too!
So, what should you do with all the "normal" quantities of yard waste that are generated in your outdoor spaces throughout the year?
That's where it pays to think "recycle and reuse" yard waste instead of yard waste "removal and disposal."
Recycle, Reuse, Reduce Applies to Our Yard Waste, Too
There are quite a few things one can do with the things we cut, prune, trim, rake up, and collect in our yards, gardens, and other outdoor spaces.
Perhaps the most obvious and increasingly popular method is to make use of a composting bin.
While this are perfect for loading up with not only organic yard water, but also food scraps and organic kitchen waste.
According to an article from Family Handyman,
"The EPA’s biggest and most basic backyard composting tip is to get your ratio right. Your three ingredients are greens, browns and water. Grass clippings, flowers, leaves, coffee grounds and fruit and vegetable scraps are all examples of greens. Twigs, dead leaves, cardboard and sawdust are all examples of browns. Although there is some routine maintenance, including watering and turning the pile, composting is an easy way to recycle yard waste and bolster the health of your yard."
So, another way to look at composting is that it's a green "two-fer" - you can take care of your organic yard waste AND your kitchen scraps at the same time!

Another use for some of that yard waste is to recycle/reuse it as homemade mulch.
All that cut grass, dead leaves, and small wood scraps can be used to create organic mulch to spread around your flower beds and gardens. Pesky weeds find it hard to come up through mulch, and the organic materials help maintain optimum temperature and moisture while enriching your soil as they decompose.
And, finally, there is the incredibly simple practice known as "grasscycling."
This simply involves not using a catchment bag on your lawn mower and leaving grass clippings on your lawn after mowing. This is a simple and easy way to recycle yard waste and it eliminates the steps of bagging and removing the clippings.
Do you have a large number of trees that you prune regularly? If so, you likely have plenty of old branches and even some large ones that more than six inches wide. These materials can be used to create functional and whimsical yard décor and furnishings with the right creative touch.
