Why Electronics Recycling Matters
We recycle all types of materials all the time. And, for most of us, this is usually our paper, aluminum, plastic and glass waste. But rarely electronics.
Yet we all dispose of electronic waste items every year, often multiple times each year. And most of us rarely consider that these unusable products can and should be recycled, as well.
Waste Electronics and Why Electronics Recycling Matters
As a nation, we produce massive quantities of electronic gadgets and devices every year.
In fact, we literally own millions upon millions of smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other handheld devices. Throw in a few million desktop PCs and a few million more Apple computers, and you've got mountains of old, unwanted or non-working electronics that find their way into our nation's solid waste stream.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that,
"According to a 2013 report by the Consumer Electronics Association, the average American household uses about 28 electronic products such as personal computers, mobile phones, televisions and electronic readers (e-readers)."
That was almost ten years ago and we've probably bumped those numbers up a bit by now.
Also, the EPA notes that Americans tossed out 2.7 million tons of unwanted consumer electronics goods as recently as 2018. And, in that same year, the rate of consumer electronics recycling for most waste products was 38.5 percent, or about 1,040,000 tons.
That's actually pretty good compared to the recycling rates of many other waste materials. But that statistic also means that almost 1.7 million tons did not get recycled.
And most of that ended up in landfills.
Let's take a graphic look at the electronics recycling state of affairs in America:
Many people often dispose of their useable, but unwanted, old computers and other electronic devices by either selling - often online - them or donating them to various non-profit groups and other organizations.
Unfortunately, this is only possible for devices that are still working and that are somewhat up-to-date. Old, 3-G cell phones won't sell readily, for example.
So, what can be down with the really old stuff, or with electronic devices and computers that simply don't function any longer?
Electronics Recycling and What You Can Do
If you still have old laptops, VCRs, desktop computers, and other large electronics lying around your house or place of work, the last thing you should do is dump them into your residential trash or recycling bin, or worse, illegally dump them someplace.
Odds are that your city, county, or state probably has regulations that determine for you how and where old computers and other waste electronics can be disposed of.
States such as California, for example, have made it illegal to place old TVs and computer monitors in the trash. In these locales, most large electronic waste items must be disposed of by following certain steps and paying additional disposal fees.
However, the good news is that, while not every state in the nation requires e-waste recycling, everyone in the country can participate in waste electronics recycling.
The bottom line?
