Why You Need Professional Junk Hauling For Your Old Hot Tub

Getting a new hot tub to replace your old one can be exciting. However, old hot tub disposal can be a problem. But there is an answer.

[This post has been revised and updated from an original post of April 2016]

With the summer weather in full swing and temperatures rising, you may not be making much use of your hot tub right now. If you're like most owners, your old hot tub has also been around for a number of years. And every year that it's sitting in the hot sun and the freezing winter weather is another year that it's deteriorating.

If you think it's finally time to replace that old spa then summer is a good time to do so. But you will still have a tough job to do.

You still have to get rid of your old hot tub!

Old Hot Tub Disposal Can Be a Challenge

If you are purchasing a new hot tub to replace your old one, odds are you are a fairly frequent user. Hot tubs are viewed by some as a cultural relic from the 1980s or 90s, but the fact is that hot tub sales are on the rise and many of those are being purchased to replace old, worn out spas.

While it's true that a new generation of buyers are discovering hot tubs (or spas and Jacuzzis) but a growing number of Baby Boomers are entering the market for somewhat different reasons. The old idea of lounging around in a bubbling hot tub at night, sipping wine or champagne, with a date, your spouse, or some close friends is still around. But there's more to it than that.

Many people are turning to hot tubs and spas for their health and therapeutic benefits.

A post at The Record.com notes the following:

"Hot tubs and spas help with minor aches and pains, soothing sore joints and muscles. The buoyancy of the water removes pressure from joints. Heat is carried deep into your muscles, allowing them to relax and bringing temporary pain relief. Hydrotherapy is very helpful for specific, painful conditions like arthritis and knee ailments.

The heat helps increase blood flow throughout the body. Warming blood causes blood vessels to dilate. After as little as 20 minutes, blood pressure is reduced.

The focused streams of water from a hot tub’s jets provide therapeutic massage you can control the intensity of, effectively relieving chronic lower back pain. It’s like having your own personal massage therapist on call."

While all this offers good reasons to replace or upgrade your current hot tub, it still leaves you with a problem: how to break down and dispose of your hot tub or spa by yourself.

Hot tubs are, of course, large and bulky. In addition, they are heavy and come with all sorts of gadgets and attachments that have to be removed. Because of their size, weight and bulk, it is highly unlikely that you will have a vehicle capable of hauling one out - even if you do succeed in getting out to your curb or driveway!

So, what can you do?

Hot Tub Disposal Options

As we've implied here, hot tub disposal is a very labor intensive process that is probably not a DIY project.

But, even if you tackle it on your and you have the hot tub completely dismantled, you need to consider how and where you're going to dispose of all the parts. Face it - that tub is not going to fit in your Prius.

In addition, it is likely that a few of the components may contain hazardous material. That material, when it is disposed of, then becomes categorized as hazardous waste. Do you know how you're going to responsibly (and legally) dispose of those parts?

Probably the most difficult part of the process is going to be breaking up the actual tub, which is likely one single piece made from plastic or another durable material such as fiberglass. The easiest way to do this is to cut it up with a jigsaw or reciprocating saw.

Because it is relatively messy, and the dust produced as a result of the sawing is likely to be hazardous, you should take precautions. This should include heavy work gloves, sturdy clothing and safety goggles. And you should definitely wear a safety mask.

After cutting the hot tub into pieces that can easily be carried you can then load all the debris into a truck for a trip to the landfill. This is not something you'll be able to leave on the curb in your residential waste bin!

If dismantling, cutting and hauling seems a bit daunting or even more than you want to tackle, then your other option is to have someone take the tub from you, sell it - if you can. But, since trying to sell your old hot tub can take a long time and quite a bit of effort, the most cost-effective and safest approach is to call a professional junk hauling firm.
