Yard Waste And Equipment Recycling For The Fall

[This post was originally published in September 2018 and has been updated and revised.]

Fall is almost here and it’s a great time to get your outdoors ready for winter. And that can mean some major junk removal and recycling.

If you're a homeowners or long-time renter, you know that there's much more to preparing your property for winter than simply putting away the lawn mower and covering up the patio furniture.

Prepping for winter can also require pruning trees, shrubs, and other plants, cutting back any overgrown areas, and even replacing some outdoor and landscaping equipment.

If your property is large, the piles of yard debris can be a bit overwhelming.

In fact, it doesn't take long to have more "green" trash than your residential-sized green recycling can hold. So, then the problem becomes what to do with all the branches, vines, leaves, stumps, and everything else?

Yard Waste as a Disposal Problem

When we speak of "yard waste" we are also including all those piles of trimmings, leaves, and grass that you've raked up. But it also includes other types of yard junk.

Fall cleaning or landscaping projects can generate large amounts of waste and debris. And it all needs to be disposed of somehow. If you have a large property this probably means hauling it away yourself, or finding some other way to get it done.

In addition to the organic waste there can be old equipment, broken lawn furniture, unusable lumber and other used building materials - you name it, it's got to be disposed of.

But the good news is that most homeowners can "recycle" much of their organic waste into valuable mulch and compost.

Maximizing Your Green Waste With Composting

One easy way to do this is to rent or buy a chip shredder or mulcher, which can turn most of your dead branches and clippings into mulch. You can combine this with your lawn clippings to spread onto your landscaping.

In other words, you can create your own great mulch to sustain and condition your soil and free organic fertilizer, as well. In addition, you can create a permanent compost pile in a container and repeat the process each year.

However, this approach may not work for every home or property. And large debris disposal can be a challenge for many people, especially if they are older and live alone, or don't have a suitable vehicle for hauling yard debris. Even asking someone else to help is not always an option for everyone.

This is why calling a professional junk hauling service really makes sense.

And Don't Forget the Old Landscaping Equipment

As a homeowner, you invest in your house and, most likely, your yard and landscaping with tools and equipment. But tools and equipment get old and break down. However, not only can you give new life to your yard trimmings as mulch, you can give new life to old tools and equipment.

Maybe it’s a broken tree trimmer, a dead leaf blower or a worn-out chainsaw. Or even your trusty, old lawnmower. But should you just throw out these items? You certainly can't just throw them into your residential trash bin and put it out on the curb. Not only are they too big but they are often contaminated with oil and gas.

So, what do you do?

The good news is that pretty much anything you need to get rid of can either be re-used or recycled.

For example, if the item can be repaired, there are many options for used, but working, equipment. Something as simple as donating them can be a great and beneficial way of giving new life to your old equipment.

Maybe your old lawnmower is still working well enough for someone else to use. Items like this can be taken to a donation center. Like recycling, reuse of old tools and equipment can be even more environmentally friendly. And it is easy to do.

Another option is repurposing some items. This can be done in a variety of ways. For example, you might find that your old, broken wheelbarrows can be used as planters and outdoor storage bins for small garden items.

Can't Reuse or Repurpose? Recycle!

Some used items are beyond repair. You can't reuse them or donate them, and you may not have any acceptable way to repurpose them. The good news is that the materials they're made of can often be recycled.

Many electric tools are constructed of plastics and other materials, which can also be recycled, as well. Scrap metal is a huge market for recycling and lawnmowers and other largely metal landscaping tools can be broken down into their different parts, cleaned of gasoline or other substances, and then recycled.

In addition to tools and old equipment, you may also find that you've still got piles of unwanted, old holiday decorations, boxes full of used gift wrapping, and maybe even a dried-up Christmas tree still taking up space in your side yard, garage or garden shed!

If you go into the fall and find that you have large amounts of debris you’ll likely find that your regular garbage can just isn't big enough.

So, what do you do with all this junk and yard waste?
