Dispose of Appliances with Junk King Louisville

How to Safely Dispose of Appliances in Glenview

Large appliances can be annoying to get rid of. They’re heavy and bulky, plus you can’t always set them outside for trash pickup due to safety concerns. The last thing you want is for a neighborhood child to get trapped in an old refrigerator or oven. These old appliances also become an eyesore. Some, like refrigerators and freezers, contain chemicals that need to be properly disposed of.

Fortunately, when you’re ready to get rid of an old appliance, there’s a very easy solution: call Junk King Louisville! We can haul away any old appliances as well as other garbage, furniture, and anything else you might be ready to get rid of. We service Glenview and the surrounding areas, so just give us a call when you need us.

Dispose of Appliances with Help

You typically have to deal with old appliances in two different situations. The first situation occurs when your appliance breaks down. Sometimes, you can have this appliance repaired. However, you do want to carefully consider the cost of repairs. If you have a washing machine that you spent around $500 on, is it worth spending $300 to have it repaired? It may not be worth it, especially if the appliance is on the older side. You might spend more money to replace it, but the replacement will be brand new. It may use less energy, which can reduce your monthly power bill. In some cases, the appliance may not be repairable, so replacement is your only option.

If you do decide to replace your broken appliance, what can you do with the old one? There’s not much use for an appliance that’s so damaged it can’t be easily and affordably repaired. In some cases, those who repair and sell used appliances may want to disassemble it for parts. You could also donate it to a local “pick a part” organization that allows anyone who needs parts to come scavenge through the appliances they have.

For those who are upgrading to a new appliance, the old one may still be functional. You may not want to send this working appliance to the junkyard, but you may not know what to do with it. You could ask friends and family if they want it, but what if there are no takers? You still want someone to get use out of the appliance.

Call Junk King – We Will Recycle Your Old Appliances

While our name may be Junk King, that doesn’t mean we see everything that we haul away as junk. Far from it. We want to do everything we can to reduce the amount of waste that goes into a landfill. To that end, it’s our goal to recycle or reuse at least 60% of everything we haul away.

If you have an old appliance that doesn’t work, we will try to find a recycling center, pick a part yard, or other place to take it. While older appliances may not have any takers, we can often find someone who is interested in these appliances.

If your appliance still works, we will donate it. There are a number of organizations in and around Louisville that will take functional appliances. Shelters often need refrigerators and microwaves. Community centers that help people get back on their feet or who assist the homeless with finding housing are always in need of appliances. We will do everything we can to ensure that anything we take, from appliances and furniture to old clothing and other supplies, finds its way to someone who needs it.

What appliances will we take?

Refrigerators

– Chest freezers

– Ovens

– Ranges

Microwaves

– Stoves

Washers/Dryers

– HVAC equipment

Water heaters

Have other appliances you need to get rid of? Call or text us a picture of the item in question and we will let you know if we can haul it away. In nearly every case, the answer is yes.

In addition to recycling your old appliances, we also look to recycle or donate the following:

Electronic waste, including computers, printers, monitors, and cell phones

Televisions

Furniture

Mattresses

What About Appliances that Contain Chemicals?

Freezers, refrigerators, air conditioners, and similar appliances contain Freon and other solvents. These chemicals can be very dangerous to the environment and to people. This is why it’s not a good idea to leave old appliances out on the curb. If the chemicals were to leak out, they can create a health hazard.

When we pick up any broken or damaged appliance that contains chemicals, we first take it to a professional who knows how to remove the solvents in a safe manner. Once that’s done, the appliance can be recycled or, if necessary, disposed of. For appliances we are donating, we will ask if there have been any chemical leaks and do a visual inspection ourselves before taking it to the donation center.

Other Safety Concerns

No matter what will be done with your old appliance, there are a few things you should do to ensure that the appliance is safe to handle. First, unplug the appliance. Appliances such as refrigerators run constantly, and they need time to cool down before they can be properly handled.

Second, you should tape the doors closed with masking tape. Our teams generally have tape on hand to secure doors, but you may want to do this anyway to make certain no one can get trapped inside the old appliance.

Always be careful when moving heavy appliances. You can easily hurt yourself. Our team will have a dolly to ensure that we can safely remove the items. If you need to move the appliance to the garage or even outside, do so carefully. Use a dolly if possible. If not, have several people work together. One person should never try to lift an appliance on their own.

Why Recycle Old Appliances?

There are many reasons to recycle old appliances. The first, as mentioned above, is that recycling old air conditioners, freezers, and refrigerators ensures that the chemicals in them are safely removed and disposed of. If these appliances are simply sent to a landfill, these chemicals will likely leak out and be absorbed into the ground.

Most appliances contain a large amount of steel. This is one of the most recycled materials in the U.S. Unlike some materials, steel can be recycled multiple times without losing any of its strength. This saves a large amount of coal, limestone, and iron. There are very few downsides to recycling steel.

Landfills are slowly filling up. Appliances, due to their sheer size, need a lot of space. By recycling them, we slow down the growth of landfills. The size of a single refrigerator may not seem like much, but 50 or 100 of them take up a significant amount of space.

Have Junk to Get Rid of in Glenview? Call Junk King

In addition to helping you dispose or recycle your old appliances, Junk King Louisville can haul away just about any junk or garbage you have on hand. Our team of professionals is regularly rated 5 stars, and our previous customers have said our team is “professional and polite” and offering a “all around positive experience.”

While we cannot take anything that includes hazardous waste, we can take the following:

– Furniture

– Televisions

– Yard waste

– Hot tubs

– Electronic devices

– Trash

– Mattresses

– Appliances

Construction waste

Have something that doesn’t really fit on this list? We may be able to haul it away, too. Give us a call or send a message through our website describing what you need removed. Our team will let you know if it’s possible.

New call-to-action

In addition to removing a few items or old appliances, Junk King also does full home clean outs. Landlords often call on us to clean out a rental unit so they can prepare it for a new tenant. We have also done foreclosure clean outs and helped with hording. No matter what junk you need removed, we’ve dealt with something similar. We have all of the tools and equipment needed to clean out a property quickly and safely. Our large fleet of trucks can often hold an entire house’s worth of junk in one load.

Only Pay for What You Use

Unlike some junk haulers, we don’t charge a flat rate for a truck. Instead, we charge you only for space you use in the truck. Don’t have a lot of junk? You won’t pay for all that unused space. This approach allows us to keep our prices down and on fuel use because we’re not taking every load to the junkyard. Instead, we wait until the truck is full. It’s another way that we’re going green.

How Responsible E-Waste Disposal Helps the Planet

Pile of E-waste Junk
Electronics like tablets, cell phones, and televisions are getting better every year, but they can also create problems if not properly disposed of. We get questions all the time about the most environmentally responsible way to dispose of electronic waste or e-waste.

E-waste essentially comprises all of your household electronics once they’ve reached the end of their useful life. When that happens, e-waste doesn’t necessarily need to head to the landfill since it can be refurbished, reused, resold to someone else, or recycled.

Recycling electronics with eco-friendly junk removal Louisville is ideal because it keeps the toxic materials (e.g., lead, cadmium, and mercury) inside these electronics out of landfills. Even better, recycling e-waste can keep the gold, silver, and palladium from these electronics in circulation.

To get a feel for the scope of electronic waste, Gartner said that 1.5 billion cell phones will ship in 2021 alone. New cell phones replace the old – a lot of e-waste is created in the process. The United Nations found that over 50 million tons of e-waste was created in 2019 alone, but less than one-fifth was properly disposed of, let alone recycled!

Facts about E-waste and Recycling Electronics

Electronic waste is generated from malfunctioning, broken, or obsolete electronics. The average person in the United States has about a dozen or more devices floating around their home at any given time, and two or more cell phones. Phones, laptops, tablets, and even batteries and chargers generate literally tons of e-waste every year.

Sadly, not all of this e-waste is recycled. Only around 20% makes it to the recycling center and most of the electronic waste generated in the United States winds up in landfills. The iron, aluminum, gold, and silver that composes 50 million tons of e-waste that gets thrown into landfills every year is squandered by improper e-waste disposal.

Properly disposing electronic waste with environmentally responsible e-waste disposal and recycling can help reverse these trends. Junk removal Louisville means proper e-waste disposal and recycling household electronics. Recycling electronics actually has a lot of benefits beyond keeping toxins out of landfills, where they can pollute local water systems and soil.

Here are a few benefits to going with responsible e-waste disposal and choosing junk removal Louisville for your household electronics:

  • •Recover valuable resources from e-waste
  • •Shore up landfill space
  • •Reduce pollution of air, water, and soil
  • •Conserve natural energy resources
  • •Create more ‘green’ jobs in the United States

Half the states in the United States – 25 out of 50 – ban electronic waste from entering the solid waste stream, but the state of Kentucky has no such rule. Worse, over half of the counties in Kentucky do not have access to a recycling facility or a recycling program.

Kentucky actually does pretty well when it comes to recycling in general as its rate has consistently been about 40% for a few years running. The one area where Kentucky can improve is e-waste recycling in that only 50 of Kentucky’s 120 counties have e-waste recycling programs.

Junk removal Louisville helps to give more people access to e-waste recycling programs since Junk King Louisville aims to reuse, repurpose, or recycle two-thirds or more of every junk haul. Junk King Louisville accepts all kinds of household appliances and electronics, so you don’t need to search endlessly for local recycling centers or charities to donate items to. Junk King can do all of this for you.

How Electronic Waste is Actually Recycled

The new iPhone 12 contains about 1,600 parts. In general separating out all of the parts in sophisticated electronics like cell phones, computer, tablets, and flat-screen televisions can be a challenge. Glasses, metals, and plastics ideally should be separated before recycling takes place.

Separating and sorting out plastics, glass, and metals is one of the main things that happens at e-waste facilities. Exterior plastics and metals are separated from the internal circuitry and the precious metals inside, say, a cell phone. A magnet at these facilities actually separates steel from iron at the facility itself. The steel is destined to be recycled. Plastics and glass are also separated using special technology.

The materials that have already been separated are then further processed so that they can be sold as raw materials. From there, the recycled components from your old electronics can be put into new electronics. This means far less pollution and the conservation of natural resources. Junk King is North America’s ‘greenest’ junk removal company and takes all kinds of e-waste.

Junk Removal Louisville: A Better Way to Dispose of E-waste

Counting on Junk King Louisville to handle eco-friendly disposal of electronic waste is a better way forward. Sadly, in the United States, less than 20% of electronic waste is recycled, and this kind of waste often contains harmful materials like lead, cadmium, and mercury. These can pollute landfills, local waterways, soil, and air.

With approximately 1.5 billion cell phones expected to sell worldwide in 2021 and 350,000 cell phones sold every day in the United States, the time is right to responsibly dispose of all of your e-waste. The average American has a dozen or more pieces of electronic waste, including:

  • •Computers
  • •Televisions
  • •Stereos
  • •VCRs
  • •DVD players
  • •Video game consoles
  • •Tablets
  • •Cell phones
  • •Printers
  • •Copiers
  • •Scanners
  • •And much more!

Responsible e-waste removal with Junk King helps keep landfills clean of heavy metals, which comprise 40% of the heavy metals currently polluting the landfills. Junk King works with local recyclers, charities, and non-profits to recycle, repurpose, and reuse as many old electronics as possible. This shores up space in landfills, conserves natural resources, and allows valuable resources – e.g., gold, silver, and palladium – to be recovered from old devices like cell phones.

If your office has a few printer copiers, shredders, or old CRT monitors then consider calling 1-888-888-5865 (JUNK) or book an appointment online to save $20 on orders of more than $99. Junk removal Louisville is an efficient, convenient, and environmentally responsible way to go about e-waste disposal. We take both residential and commercial electronic waste.
