How To Remove Boxes Of Rubbish From Your Dedham Home

Letting go of unwanted things becomes easier when your goal is to improve your living conditions. That might mean making more room for storage of the things that matter versus the things you can do without. If you are keeping a lot of things in boxes, then you are already organized. However, not every one of those individual boxes contains items that you need to hold onto forever. There could be clothing that has been outgrown or electronic gear that has been replaced. Those are two perfect examples of what you can get rid of without missing then at all! When you have made the determination that there are boxes that need to be removed from your Dedham home, then you need to set up a removal session with Junk King Boston.

Two-hour Window

When scheduling your Junk King appointment, you’ll be asked to pick a day and a two-hour window that works best within that day. It certainly won’t take the junk King crew two hours to carry out a bunch of boxes. But it could take that amount of time to get from one appointment to the next. Welcome to Boston traffic! Throughout the day, the junk King team will remain in constant contact with you to keep you apprised of when you can expect them to arrive. If the traffic flows, then they can be early!

Once the crew gets to your home you will show them all the boxes that you want all the way. They will be carried out and loaded onto the truck in a matter of minutes. At that point, the job can literally be over. Of course, in addition to the boxes that you want to get rid of you can also use the Junk King crew to haul away any other bulky item that you are done with.  You should always take full advantage of your Junk King crew and their big truck.

Getting boxes of rubbish out of your Dedham home will be easy once you call Junk King Boston to take care of it.

Depending on where you live in Middlesex County, one of the chores many of us have is disposing of old junk. Whether that’s somewhere near Groveland, Bedford, Manchester, or Amesbury, we all have things that need to go.

Now that spring is here the weather is getting better. And the days are getting longer because summer is coming. All of which means that it’s a good time to get rid of all that junk!

Regardless of whether you are an apartment renter, a homeowner, a residential contractor, or a brick-and-mortar business owner, junk removal is likely a recurring need and often a challenging task, as well. This is why Junk King Middlesex is here to help!

Accumulating Junk is Easy but Getting Rid of it May Not Be

For example, residential construction projects generate trash, debris, yard waste and various types of other waste materials. And this must be cleaned up repeatedly throughout the course of the job to keep the site safe and easy to work in. Unfortunately, residential contractors have to take the time to haul off and dispose of all the junk and debris – a task that is tedious and time-consuming.

In fact, on most sites it’s a job no one wants to do, and no one really has the time for.

Then there are real estate professionals. They are often faced with abandoned furniture, appliances, and other assorted junk and trash that needs to be removed from a vacant property. If the former homeowners didn’t take care of this task, then the junk needs to be cleared out, hauled off, and properly disposed of or recycled. And that often falls on the agent.

When businesses relocate, remodel their facilities, or conduct a major cleanup they will usually generate large amounts of trash and unwanted junk. Again, someone is needed to clean up, haul away, and dispose of it all.

And many homeowners and renters regularly find themselves saddled with old junk items that need to be gotten rid of. This is often household junk that is too large to be put into their residential recycling or trash bins. And these folks usually don’t have a truck or extra hands to help with this chore!

So, the question for many contractors, real estate professionals, and business owners, and others is, “Who can handle the task of junk removal efficiently?”

Junk Removal Can Be a Literal Pain

There are many potential downsides to hauling your own junk, debris, or trash, and here’s just a few:

  • Injuries, pulled muscles, and strained backs
  • Having to rent a truck or borrow one
  • Knowing what can be disposed of and what must be recycled
  • Finding locations for proper disposal

Even if you only have to have junk removal a few times a year or so it can be risky, costly, and highly inconvenient to do it yourself. Not only that, depending on the materials, some of your junk and debris can contain hazardous wastes and there are several local, state, and federal rules that require these items to be properly handled and disposed of.

The good news is that there is an easy way to avoid the pain and cost of hauling your own junk. A simple call to a professional and expert junk hauling firm like Junk King Middlesex can make your junk hauling burden go away quickly and easily.

In fact, there is far more that we can do for you than simply haul off some household junk. Here’s a great infographic that shows some of what we can do for you when it comes to junk removal:

Why “Doing It Yourself” is Not an Efficient Junk Removal Option

Everyone’s time is valuable, even homeowners and renters. And, if you own or manage a business, it’s also very true that “time is money” no matter where you are, including places like Lawrence, Derry, Nashua, or Hamilton.

For example, if you hire someone for $15 an hour, your actual payroll cost is closer to $19 to $21 an hour for a full-time employee. If you have this employee to clean up your junk, load it all in a truck, haul it to a landfill or waste transfer station to dump it, then come back and clean out the truck, this can take a great deal of time.

And money.

In fact, depending on the amount of junk and how far away the landfill or waste transfer site is, this could take over half the day.

That means a five-hour clean-up job could cost you almost $100 in labor along with fuel and dumping fees. In addition, you also have to factor in the cost of five or so hours of lost productivity that occurred as your employee was not at work doing the job you actually hired them to do.

That means that, in our little example, your “quick and cheap” junk hauling task could end up costing you almost $250!

Granted, this is a fictional scenario and, if you did the work yourself, you might think you won’t have the labor costs. That would be true except that, as an owner or manager, your own time has value and the time you spend being a junk hauler is time you’re not spending doing what you do best – your own job.

This principle is as true for contractors as it is for other business owners, by the way. Hauling out junk, trash, and debris is not productive work and actually takes away from it.

Should I get a dumpster or hire junk removers

dumpster vs junk removal service

In the spring of 2016, I took possession of our first dumpster truck and 7 dumpsters.  It was a harrowing time.  I remember being so excited and having my local welder in Chelmsford, MA take the dumpsters off the tractor-trailer flatbed in his parking lot.  Then came the time for me to remove the dumpsters from his parking lot.  I backed my truck up trying to get it to match up with the dumpster properly a bunch of times.  You see, picking up a dumpster means you need to back up to it straight on.  There is a set of rails on the dumpster and a set of rails on the truck.  The rails on the dumpster are slightly wider and need to sit on the outside of the truck rails.  If you are lined up properly, with the rails in the right place, it’s really easy to do.  The Video I watched from the dumpster manufacturer said so. That’s when things went south.

The first dumpster actually went fine, and I started to feel confident about pulling them on the truck.  But soon after, I had one that I didn’t line up properly, and in my overconfidence, I pulled it up at an angle and it pulled on top of the rail that it should have sat parallel to and outside of.  Then it fell inside of that rail, and got stuck on the safety hook that holds a dumpster from falling off of a truck. So, after a bit of panic, a fork truck driver came out and helped me get the dumpster off the back of my truck.  Needless to say, I learned that you need to line straight up with those dumpsters to avoid issues.  And obviously, I know now to train all our new dumpster drivers to do exactly that.

Factors to determine if you should get a dumpster or hire a junk removal service

In the five years following, I don’t want to say we’ve perfected dumpsters or anything, but we are doing a pretty good job with them.  We’ve delivered them in pretty much every town in our area, from Dunstable and Groton out to Malden and Medford.  We have 12 cubic yard dumpsters, which are a good size for a lot of projects, they’re about the size of a car.  In fact, they now make up about a quarter of our business. So, the question you might be asking yourself, is should I get a dumpster or have your junk removal service come by?  There are quite a few facets to answering this question.

Dumpsters are a round trip

The first thing to keep in mind is that the dumpster driver needs to come to you twice.  So, for your smaller jobs, like, just a mattress, or a treadmill, you are best off using the junk removal service.  Even though we’re doing the work for you, it’ll be cheaper- and easier on your back!

But if you have more than one, or a couple of items, it might be cheaper to rent the dumpster.  Our Mini Dumpsters have 3 levels, ¼ full, ½, and full.  As long as you fill it at least a quarter full, a lot of times that’s the most value if time isn’t of concern.

Of course, there’s also that aspect.  When you hire our full-service team, you are hiring our guys.  Our guys are careful, and they are there to get things done.  So, where you might spend the whole weekend agonizing over which items should go, and which should stay, our guys have no such emotional connection.  They ask which items you want to leave your presence, and then they get it out into a truck.  So, we find that a lot of customers really like that aspect, quick and painless.  But in other cases, you really do actually need that time to sort through which items to keep and which to remove.

There are some other downsides to dumpsters too.  We include 2000 pounds of disposal in the dumpster, but charge by the pound after that.  So, if it’s going to rain or snow, you could have some extra weight, but, with the exception of a blizzard, it’s actually not as bad as you think.  With the rain, when we lift the dumpster onto the truck, almost all of the water comes out the back into your driveway.  Most of the rest drips out as we drive to dispose of your stuff.

Do you have neighbors?

No, the big main concern is neighbors!  Or even just someone wandering by.  We’ve had quite a number of occasions where someone will say that they never put a tv or tires in the dumpster.  Or that their dumpster was only half full, not all the way.  Sadly, it’s a real thing in the dumpster industry.  Illegal dumping is a sad but real thing in our world.  Our suggestion to minimize this is to get it loaded and picked up as quick as possible.  It is not the norm, it’s actually unusual, but it does happen and it’s something to be aware of- Because the renter is responsible for the items that are put in it.

Space – where will you be putting the dumpster?

Oh, and another thing to consider, is, do you have space for a dumpster?  Are you going to try putting it in the road?  We have people do this occasionally, and in almost every town, the thing you should be aware of is that you need a permit from the town.  And you need to request this days or weeks ahead of time.  Have I seen people get away without this?  Yes.  If you are on a small side road, that the building inspector won’t go down, you probably have a good chance.  Do I recommend it?  No.   And also, putting it in the road increases your chance for the dumping I covered in the last paragraph.  Of course, I should say, in the area we cover, Middlesex and Essex Counties, the landscape is very different.  The closer to Boston, or any of the city areas, this is probably a bigger issue.  In Suburban and Rural areas, it would likely not be an issue.

Our Big Red Trucks

Someone asked me once, “you call yourself green, why do you drive big dirty diesel trucks that pollute?” I’ve answered that a few times, the justification of that comes with the reality, that- nothing is really green. By that, I mean, staying home and doing nothing, and buying nothing, is really the green thing to do. Obviously, in today’s society, that’s not going to happen, and it wouldn’t be very fun! So, when it comes to being green, our business is built and is evolving to be, as green as we possibly can with the acknowledgment that nothing is perfect.

Bigger Trucks = Less Trips = Less Fuel Burnt

So, our trucks, as an example, are 20% bigger than most other junk removal companies. The advantage of this is that if you call us, we can get it done with fewer trips; or get more jobs done with one trip. Less trips, equals less fuel burnt. So, while it’s not perfect, we do our best. Our franchise covers the area from Pepperell to Gloucester, to Somerville, MA. It’s a pretty big area, and it can be challenging to cover sometimes. Especially with traffic!

Our main headquarters is in Chelmsford, MA, and if we had to drive down to Medford, for example, and we did four jobs down in that area but had to drive back to Chelmsford to unload before doing the 5th, we’d be burning a lot more gas. By having the larger trucks, we are often able to fit that last job in without making that extra trip. The coming generation of electric vehicles is exciting but does not have one suited to our purposes quite yet. But it won’t be long!

How We Go Out of Our Way to Be Green

Another thing we do to make our big red trucks as green as possible is that we actually recycle. Recycling has many advantages when it comes to climate change. A lot of it is kind of glossed over, as just the right thing to do. When you recycle an item, you have the base material that you can just reform into something new. To make a new steel can for soup, for example, you need to dig large mines in the ground, and find the ore, which then needs to be formed into steel, usually in a foreign country, and then shipped overseas to become a can. One ton of recycled steel saves 642 Kwh of energy plus 4 cubic yards of landfill space. The carbon footprint of one vs the other is a no-brainer.

In addition to this carbon footprint that we’re preventing- what do you think happens with a steel can that you throw into the trash? It is shipped hundreds of miles away to a landfill. Here in Massachusetts, we don’t have many landfills left. Our trash is being shipped by rail car or truck to upstate New Hampshire, or to Ohio, or New York. All of these have carbon emissions attached. So, while nothing is perfect, we certainly do our best!

Currently, when a truck comes back to our yard, we pull out all of the mainstream recyclables that we can. Paper, plastic, glass, cardboard, scrap metals, and we dispose of them properly. If it’s an appliance like a refrigerator or an air conditioner, we have a licensed technician come once a month to purge the refrigerant before we recycle them.

How We Help Our Community by Donating & Repurposing Unwanted Junk

We also give away a large amount of items. From donations, through our Junk King Middlesex Free Giveaways Facebook group, we have given away, literally tons of items like furniture to keep them out of the landfill. Feel free to join!

But When it comes down to it, the best thing you can do is buy fewer items. You can do this by buying items that will last longer, or items with less waste impact. There are many newer green items with less packaging, for example, that minimizes the waste stream. I recently bought a hand soap dispenser, with little disks of soap concentrate, that dissolve in water to make hand soap. (regular hand soap probably contains 90% water).

There are also shampoo bars, that come in a little paper package, instead of a big plastic bottle. You just use them like a bar of soap, and they lather right up to make shampoo. Shampoo is another item that is 90% water. So, on both sides, the shipping to you, and the shipping away to the dump or recycling center, the amount of bulk that needs to be transported can be lessened. By using less material, we can have less in our waste stream filling our landfills. This has a major impact on municipal budgets that will only rise with time. By cutting our amount of waste, we can help keep the town’s budgets healthy.

And on the environmental front, why would we pay to ship water in soaps and shampoos across the country? Instead, we could just ship a small disk or bar of shampoo across the country which uses less fuel. From things like CDs and DVDs, which are all now instant downloads without any carbon footprint, to bars of soap, there’s so much we can do as consumers to help keep America green!

I may have gotten a little off-topic here. But what I’m getting at is that we as consumers have the chance at buying more sustainable products to reduce our waste stream. After that, when those products are at the end of their useful life, we will do everything we can with our Big Red Trucks to get them to the best possible outcome for that item! Also, those trucks have something called a Diesel Particulate filter, that actually makes their emissions far cleaner than they used to be. I’ll talk about that in another blog post!

Tap In Junk King To Clean Out Your Chestnut Hill Alley

The front of a home is where all the curb appeal action happens. Behind the home, is an alley that certainly isn’t kept up as much as the front yard. The alley is where trash is picked up and garages are entered by. A back alley is also a place where there can be trouble in the form of dumped debris. Although the weekly garbage pickup is meant to clean out the cans, that doesn’t stop some folks from making illegal dumping in an alley. Their rationale is that someone else will take care of it. All too often, one pile of illegal dumped rubbish soon grows out of control as more is added to the pile. Just look at any vacant lot for proof of that! Before a situation like that happens in your back alley you might need to bring in the crew from Junk King Boston. These are the professional junk haulers that can help you clear out any amount of trash from your Chestnut Hill alley.

Always fast and efficient

Junk King will sign at least two movers for your alley cleanup project. These movers always operate in a fast and efficient manner. As far as Junk King is concerned cleaning up an alley is not much of a challenge. Yes, it might be a bit dirty but it is easy to load on that debris when they can back the truck right up to the spot.

How the truck it’s packed up will also determine how much you will be paying for the service. The Junk King crews always like to get as much as they can packed into as tight a space as possible. That leaves them room for the next appointment and it provides you with a chance to pay the low end of the price scale. That extra room can also benefit you. Just because you are calling in Junk King to clean up the alley doesn’t mean you can’t get rid of any objects inside your home. This is a chance to finally get rid of all those bulky objects that are too big for the trash can.

In Chestnut Hill you can always count on Junk King Boston to provide fast alley cleanup and rubbish removal.

What is With the Recycling Fee Anyways?

So, throughout our time doing junk removal, we have charged recycling fees, or surcharges, for certain items. No one likes them. I don’t like them. So, I figured I’d go into why we charge them and why they are important. The basics of it, are that some sort of special handling is needed somewhere in the disposal of the item. In a lot of places in the world, and even in certain places in this country, it’s possible to just take the items and pitch them in a hole in the ground. But here in Massachusetts, our landfills are quickly reaching capacity, at which point they are closed, and our environmental laws are a little tougher, which amounts to cleaner water and air. For each item, there’s a different story. It’s probably pretty boring to most, but if you want to know a little more about the waste stream, read on!

Television Recycling & Disposal in Massachusetts

So, let’s start out with the dreaded television. This is one of the most common items that we pick up. There are of course multiple types of TV. The most common one we have picked up through our history is the Cathode ray tube. (CRT) The CRT is the old-style TV, that everyone has in their attic or basement. They’re heavy and bulky and no one uses them anymore. The process of recycling a CRT starts with breaking down the outside. Typically, the black plastic is removed and can be recycled, although it has no value. Then the circuit boards are taken out, and some wiring, which has a little bit of value. But the real reason for the surcharge is the leaded glass. The core of the TV is a glass tube that makes up probably 80% of the weight of that TV. The real challenge, because there’s no use for leaded glass currently, is to melt down the glass, and separate the lead, and the glass, both of which have some value. But the process is extremely energy-intensive and costs quite a bit of money to accomplish, hence the extra fee.

Newer TVs do not contain leaded glass, but they often have fluorescent bulbs in them, which is another challenge for recycling. They contain a lot of circuit boards though, and a much lesser volume of materials compared to the old TVs, so in a lot of ways, they are a leap forward environmentally over the old tv screens. Still have some technical challenges, but they are better.

junk removal service recycling

Air Conditioner Recycling & Refrigerator Recycling

Second, and another common one is the Air conditioner or the refrigerator. Both contain refrigerant, which is damaging to the ozone and is a pollutant to boot. Many will call this “Freon” but freon is a brand name, so refrigerant is the proper term. This one is a little more of a problem because there are people who exist in the world who will just cut the refrigerant lines and harvest the copper and scrap it. This is illegal for one, and in actuality, I think the fines are $25,000 per occurrence, per item. So, if you are considering hiring someone who’s not charging a fee for these, be cautious to ask what is going to happen with the item. In our case, we put them aside and hire a certified technician to come out monthly to properly pump out the refrigerant. It’s the right thing to do.

Mattress Recycling in Massachusetts

The last common item with the list is Mattresses. Mattresses, do not contain hazardous materials like refrigerants or lead. Instead, they are a technical challenge. You see, when we bring items to the transfer station, they are typically chopped up by machinery. That machinery crushes, and grinds, and rips materials up, so that they can be sorted as different grades of material, that move to the proper area for recycling or landfilling. So, the problem is the spring steel in the mattress or box spring. That steel is flexible and durable, so when it hits one of these machines, it doesn’t shatter or break. It often binds up within the machine, getting wound up in the rollers or whatever you call the mechanism. Know what happens then? The whole line has to get shut down. There’s nothing more expensive than a piece of machinery that is shut down! So, because of this, they need to separate out the mattresses and bring them to a place that disassembles them by hand so that the components can be properly separated.

Tire Recycling & Disposal

Tires. The last surcharge is a less common one because, realistically, when you get your tires changed you tend to leave the old ones at the tire store. But for some car aficionados or do-it-yourselfers, you might have a set of tires, or maybe snow tires, in the basement or in your garage. Tires are a waste ban item from the landfills, and as with the other items, have a specialist disposal company that deals with them. We have a company pick them up, and transport them down to New Bedford, MA where they deal with the process of shredding the tires. Sometimes this is turned into that rubber mulch on playgrounds, and sometimes it is used as a backstop in firing ranges. But it needs specialized expensive equipment to get this done, and so there are only a few companies who will do it, which results in that recycling fee.

So, there you have it. Our whole list of recycling surcharges explained. We have spent ten years honing our waste stream to get the best pricing, with the most responsible recyclers, in order to keep our prices as low as we can. There are reasons we need to charge the fees, and no matter who you choose, keep in mind they should be paying these fees as well. If they for some reason can get away without charging the fee, you should ask yourself why that is. With a reputable company, and there are many out there, you don’t have to worry about getting a phone call from the police asking why your items were dumped on the side of a street!
