If you don’t live alone, you can’t purge alone. You need to have all of your family members participate. Each person needs to purge their own rooms and closets. For shared spaces, everyone should take ownership of their items in that space.
Don’t just purge—organize, too

You need to organize as you go so you can easily incorporate your new holiday gifts and the other items you’ll pick up throughout the year. If you don’t, you may start shoving those items into whatever cabinet, drawer, or other space that’s empty. One of the reasons why homes become cluttered is impulse shopping. Some people are more prone to this than others. If you enjoy a bit of retail therapy after a bad day, try to limit yourself to items you need. Buying things just because you want them may be fun, but those items will start to accumulate.
