Why Recycling Electronics is So Important

Electronic devices are everywhere these days. Everything from small wearable devices to large appliances can contain technology. Some homes are built from the ground up with electronic devices embedded in them to control the temperature, the blinds, and much more. While electronics are designed to last for quite some time, they can also break down or be damaged. When that happens, it’s often cheaper to replace them than it is to have them repaired. This, however, leads to electronic debris.

Almost 7 million tons of electronic debris were created in the U.S. in 2019. While that’s a fairly small percentage of the overall amount of waste created, electronic debris is its own special type of trash. Almost all electronic devices contain precious metals, including palladium, copper, gold, and silver. A single smartphone doesn’t have that much of these materials in it, but 7 million tons of electronics do. In 2019, it’s estimated that almost 7.5 billion dollars worth of precious metals and other materials were thrown into the landfill.

This is just one reason why recycling electronics is so important. Here are some other reasons why we need to recycle these devices and how Junk King can help you get your electronics to the recycling facility.

Recycling Electronics Reduces the Need for Precious Metals

Let’s continue talking about precious metals. Palladium, a metal that many people aren’t familiar with, is used in electrical contacts, watches, catalytic converters, surgical instruments, and more. According to mineral surveys, there are more than 6,700 million ounces of the metal in the current mines.  This is why prices for palladium are typically over $2,000 per ounce. The amount of money lost, then can quickly add up. Fortunately, recycling a million smartphones recoups over 30 pounds of the metal. It also reuses over 70 pounds of gold, 700 pounds of silver, and 35,000 pounds of copper.

The circuit boards found in computers, printers, smart appliances, phones, gaming devices, and other electronics are the primary location for these metals. In fact, there’s enough gold found in circuit boards that it’s actually more time-efficient to recycle them than it is to mine more gold. One ton of recycled circuit boards has, at minimum, about 40 times more gold in it than a ton of ore.

The more electronics that are discarded and end up in the landfill, the higher the cost of new electronics will become. Eventually, some of these metals will become so rare that it may be impossible to create enough new devices to meet the demand. As technology continues to expand, we’re going to need more materials, which means recycling is going to become even more vital to the industry than it already is.

It Protects the Environment

Many electronics, especially older ones, contain hazardous materials that can greatly damage the soil if they leak into it. These materials include arsenic, mercury, and lead. An old CRT monitor or television, for example, can contain as much as eight pounds of lead. If it gets into the soil and into the water from there, it can become deadly. As other components in electronics break down, they can release various chemicals such as lithium that can also damage the soil and water. If any of these chemicals make it into the groundwater, they can eventually get into streams or lakes, killing the animals that rely on this water.

Air pollution is another concern. Some landfills and other waste disposal locations incinerate the waste they receive. If electronics are burned, the plastics and other materials can release hazardous emissions. These emissions can be dangerous to humans and animals who breathe them in, plus they can also contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer.

Electronic waste dumped in the ocean is another major issue. Electronics aren’t made from biodegradable materials, which means piles of these devices will quickly build up on the seabed. When chemicals are released from these devices, they can destroy the ecosystems of the surrounding waters.

Recycling Electronics Protects You, Too

In addition to protecting the environment, recycling electronics also protects you. If you throw an old computer in the trash, you don’t know where it will end up. If anyone gets ahold of the hard drive in it, they could have access to all of your information. Even if you deleted everything, it’s not truly gone unless it was done using professional tools that remove all traces of the data. Even old devices that have been exposed to the elements may still have some retrievable data on them.

If you’re going to get rid of an electronic device, your best option is to recycle it. Recyclers do normally run all devices through a strong magnetic field to delete all information. The entire device is also disassembled, leaving nothing left that’s capable of storing data. During this process, anything that cannot be recycled is usually damaged beyond repair.

Electronics recycling also protects you from legal action. In some states, it’s actually illegal to put electronics in the trash. Most city garbage programs also state that they do not accept electronics, even if there’s no official state law about it. If you live in a state with a law against dumping electronics, you could be fined if you do.

 You Can Save Money

Another great benefit to recycling electronic devices is that you may be able to save some money. Some manufacturers will ask if you want to recycle your old device when you purchase a new one. If you do, they may give you a discount or other bonus with your new purchase. If your old device still works, the manufacturer may donate it to someone in need, while broken devices get recycled.

How Can You Recycle Electronics?

There are a few ways to recycle your electronics besides trading them in. That may not even be an option. While trading in devices is fairly common with smartphones and tablets, it’s typically not an option with desktop computers, laptops, gaming devices, and other electronics. So how can you recycle them?

One thing you may want to do first is, if the device is still functioning, consider giving it to someone or donating it. While recycling devices is great, reducing the need for new devices is even better. Some people may also not be able to afford a phone or computer, so donating can provide them with something they could never have otherwise. If you have an older child who has been asking for a phone, giving them your old device is a good way of seeing if they can take care of it properly before you spend money on a newer model.

If the device is broken or too old to really be of use any longer, then it’s time to look into recycling. Most city recycling programs won’t take electronics, so it’s not quite as simple as putting them in your recycling bin. Fortunately, many electronics and office supply stores will accept old electronics for recycling. Not all do, and not all will take all electronic devices, so be sure to find out which stores will accept which items. You may also want to ask what steps they take to delete data and other personal information from the devices they take.

There are some specific electronic recycling companies out there. These companies generally take all types of electronics, though again, it’s always best to call and make certain they accept the things you have. Again, be sure you ask how they delete personal data from the items they take.

Junk King North Houston Collects and Recycles Electronics

Another very easy way to recycle your electronic devices is to have Junk King Houston North haul them away. Our team collects electronic waste as well as old furniture, appliances, yard waste, construction debris, and other bulk trash. Instead of taking them to the dump, we sort out anything that can be donated or recycled. Electronics typically go in the recycling stack. We pass them along to a recycling center that knows how to remove personal data before breaking down the devices and recycling the materials within them.

Junk King is dedicated to protecting the environment and reducing our carbon footprint. That’s why we donate and recycle as much of what we take in as possible. Overall, less than a third of all the trash we pick up goes to the landfill, and we’re always looking for ways to reduce that amount even more.

As an owner of a construction company, you know building is only a part of your job. The opposite—demolition—is also often a major task you have to undertake. Construction Sites and Garbage

What junk will you have to deal with as a construction company owner? There’s a good amount of different types of debris. The first type comes with preparing the land for building upon. If there’s an existing structure that you’re getting rid of, the demolition part of the process is going to generate a large amount of debris. You’ll need to have all of this junk removed before you can do anything. Often, that means using large machinery to knock the building down, then placing it in dumpsters or on large trucks. Even if you’re just demolishing a small shed or other building, you’re still going to have some debris to remove.

Even if you start with untouched land, there’s still going to be some debris. You may have to remove trees or get rid of out-of-control landscaping. The land may not be level enough to build on, either, so some dirt may need to be removed. All of that must be removed from the site before you can bring in all of your equipment and begin the build.

Once you start construction, there’s still more debris that has to be hauled away. You’ll be cutting wood, metal, and other materials to fit the blueprints, leaving behind small pieces that can’t be used for anything else. This trash has to go somewhere. It may not seem like much when you only have a few inches of leftover wood, but these small remnants add up over time. You may also have packaging and other materials used to transport your supplies that will need to be thrown away. If you let any of this garbage pile up, it can quickly get out of hand.

Dumpster or Junk Hauling?

This leads to the question: do you need to rent a dumpster for your next construction job or should you use a junk hauling service? It depends, and in some cases, you may want to use both. You may want to make use of junk hauling after you tear down any existing structures. You need that junk to get cleared out of the space quickly, so you may not have time to wait for dumpster pickup. There may also be so much debris that a single dumpster won’t be enough. Having a few trucks that can haul off all the debris at once can be helpful.

However, once that’s done, you’ll definitely want to have a dumpster on site for the amount of trash you generate on a daily basis. All that packaging and leftover material has to go somewhere. Garbage cans aren’t going to be enough. You’ll need to have a good-sized dumpster to hold all of it. You’ll probably need to have that dumpster emptied regularly, too. If you use junk hauling for this, you’ll still have to have some place to put all the trash. Why not simply have a dumpster to throw it all in? This will keep the trash contained and make it much easier to haul it away.

If you don’t have much to clear away from the site before work can commence, you may simply need to have a dumpster brought in. During the project, if you notice that your dumpster is filling up often or that you suddenly have too much trash for it to hold, you may need to have Junk King bring in a large truck and empty your dumpster. We can then change your dumpster pickup schedule so that it is emptied more often.

Why It’s Important to Remove Debris from the Work Site

Why should you be so concerned about the amount of trash that accumulates at your work site? Why not wait until the end to get rid of it all? There are a few different reasons. Many construction sites generate a lot of debris. If you’re working on a large project, you’re going to have a lot of materials coming in and out. You’ll have packaging to deal with along with the small ends and other remainders of materials to throw away. You may have to do additional leveling in some areas, so you may have some additional grass and landscaping to remove. If something is done wrong and the material can’t be reused, you’ll have those materials to throw away, too.

All of this trash adds up. When it does, it can take up vital room that you need for parking, storage, or working. Your team’s workspace may continue to get smaller and smaller as the trash adds up. It can become harder and harder to find space to get work done.

This also opens up a number of safety concerns. A lack of space can lead to accidents, especially if your crew doesn’t have the space to move around safely. Trash all over can result in trips, too. Someone could easily fall over small pieces of debris since they make the walkway uneven. It’s even possible someone could cut themselves on the sharp corners of leftover material. Putting it all in a dumpster gets it out of the way and keeps all the trash contained to one area. It’s much safer than piling it up somewhere.

What Junk King Offers

Junk King North Houston offers both junk hauling and dumpster rental for residents and businesses in the area. We can come haul off any debris you have, plus our dumpsters are designed to fit in small areas while still providing a good amount of space. We will work with you to determine the right option for you and your budget as well as your schedule.

Unlike some junk hauling or dumpster rental companies, Junk King hauls away a large amount of stuff. We can take just about anything as long as it isn’t hazardous waste. If you’re demolishing a structure that still contains furniture or appliances, we can take those out for you. We also handle electronic waste, yard waste, construction waste, and much more. We can even dispose of paint as long as it’s mixed with a solidifying agent such as sawdust or cat litter.

We Recycle and Donate What We Can

Unlike some companies, we don’t simply haul everything straight to the landfill. Instead, we go through the truck or dumpster and sort it into three piles. If anything can be donated, such as furniture that’s still in good condition or an appliance that still works, we will pass it along to one of our North Houston partner agencies. These organizations see to it that the items get to those in need. While this may not be something that happens too often with construction, we will make sure anything you do have that can be used is donated.

It’s much more likely that you will have leftover materials that can be recycled. Wood, metal, and other types of materials that are untreated, which is typically the case with scraps left over from construction, can be recycled. We work closely with different recycling companies to take these scraps or old materials and recycle them. Our goal is to limit what goes to the landfill, and by donating and recycling, we have greatly cut down our impact on the environment.

That’s not to say that we don’t still take things to the dump. Unfortunately, there are a number of items and materials that still cannot be recycled or reused. In some cases, we do still have to use a landfill. However, what ends up there from one of our trucks or dumpsters is only a fraction of what we pick up.

Our Pricing Structure

We charge by how much space your trash uses in our dumpster. This means when you have a full dumpster, you’ll pay the maximum price. However, if you have a period where you don’t create that much trash, you’ll pay less. This means that towards the end of the project when most of the major construction is done, you won’t be charged as much. This helps keep your costs down. All of our rental fees are fully transparent, so you’ll know exactly what you’re paying for.

For our junk hauling service, we’ll give you a transparent, free estimate before we start. There’s no obligation to use our services even after you get a quote, so you can compare pricing with our competitors if you like. In the end, though, we truly believe you’ll find that Junk King North Houston offers the most comprehensive services at the best prices.

Junk King North Houston Old Mattress Removal

5 Signs Your Old Mattress is Making You Sick

Do you often wake up feeling sore and unrested? Have you noticed that your allergies or asthma has gotten a lot worse in recent months or years? If so, it’s possible your mattress is to blame. An old mattress can have a major impact on your overall health. If you haven’t bought a new mattress in recent years, it may be time to consider doing so if you’ve noticed that your sleep is affected. Here are some of the signs that your old mattress has gone from being a little uncomfortable to actually making you sick.

Ready To Book? Click & Save $20!

You Wake Up Feeling Stiff and Sore

One of the most obvious signs that your mattress is old and is now affecting your physical health is how you feel in the morning. If you wake up feeling very stiff and sore, your mattress isn’t providing you the support you need. The foam may have sunk or developed some lumpy spots. Springs may have shifted and may stick up a bit too far, poking you in the side. If you always have the same stiff or sore spots in the morning, it’s likely your mattress is to blame.

Another sign that you need to look for mattress replacement in North Houston is that you can’t get comfortable to fall asleep at night. You may toss and turn, trying to find a position that doesn’t put too much pressure on your joints. If you find yourself waking up in the night due to discomfort, look for mattress disposal sooner rather than later. You definitely need a new mattress.

What will these aches and pains do long-term? They can make it easier for you to injure yourself. You may start relying more and more on over-the-counter pain relievers, too. While using these medications every now and then is fine, if you’re using them daily, they could impact your health. Being sore also affects your mood. You might become more agitated and snap at people more often, especially in the morning.

You Don’t Feel Rested in the Morning

Even if you don’t feel stiff and sore in the morning, your mattress may still be making you sick if you’re not getting a good night’s sleep. A lack of sleep can affect your body in a number of ways. It can make specific chronic illnesses, including heart disease and diabetes, worse. Your body repairs itself during sleep, and if you’re constantly waking up, that process is interrupted. If these interruptions continue every night, it can also be hard to fight off illnesses or recover from wounds.

Going without sleep can affect you mentally and emotionally, too. When your brain doesn’t get the rest it needs, you’ll find thinking and concentrating can be much more difficult. Your brain may feel fuzzy, and even listening and comprehending what someone is saying can be hard. You are much more likely to make mistakes or forget things when you’re sleep-deprived, too. Your reaction time will also be affected. You may not be able to move fast enough to prevent an accident. If you’re driving, you may not see an oncoming car or react fast enough to avoid getting into a wreck.

Emotionally, a lack of sleep can affect your temper. You may find that you’re agitated and get upset much more easily when you haven’t had much sleep. This can cause friction in your relationships, especially if you find yourself getting angry. Going days or weeks without a good night’s rest, however, can make things that normally wouldn’t bother you at all set off an overly emotional reaction.

Heavy Lifting, Without Moving A Muscle

Your Allergies or Asthma Are Getting Worse

Your bed isn’t always to blame for an increase in allergies or asthma, but it can be. Mattresses, over time, collect all kinds of dirt and debris. Even if you have a mattress protector under your sheet, there are still things that will get into the mattress. Dust, dust mites, pet dander, and even mold will start building up in the mattress over the years. Whenever you sleep in the bed, you’ll be breathing some of this stuff in. It will certainly affect your breathing, especially if you already have some breathing issues. It can make allergies worse as well as trigger your asthma.

If you’ve tried vacuuming, airing out the space, and an air purifier but still find that your allergies are pretty bad when you sleep at home, it could be your mattress. Think about when you bought your mattress. If it’s been five years or more, it could be the issue or at least contributing to your breathing difficulties. Remember, just because the general rule is to replace a mattress every eight years doesn’t mean that every mattress will last that long. When you suspect your mattress is causing you health problems, it’s time to search for mattress removal in North Houston.

You Find Signs of Bed Bugs

No one wants bed bugs. These little pests will come out at night and literally suck your blood, leaving you with itchy spots all over. Taking care of a bed bug infestation is not easy. While it may seem like a good spray takes care of them, you may find that they are back within a few weeks. That’s because bed bugs are so small they can hide inside the covers of electrical outlets and behind loose trim.

Even if you have the home tented and sprayed, it may be too late for your mattress. While there are some options for cleaning mattresses, unless it’s brand new, you may be better off replacing it. Use this as an opportunity to get a brand new mattress, though do be certain the infestation has been eradicated first so you don’t get the pests in your new mattress.

The Tag Mentions Specific Chemicals

Today, many mattresses are designed to comply with specific non-toxic regulations or with organic standards. However, not all mattresses do so, and some older mattresses definitely don’t meet these standards. They may contain chemicals such as polyurethane, formaldehyde, and more that can actually cause skin reactions and irritate your lungs and throat. If you check your mattress tag and it lists any of these chemicals, it may be time to replace it with an organic mattress or one that meets Oeko-Tex Standard 100, a regulation that limits the amount of specific chemicals in products.

How Do You Get Rid of Mattresses?

When it comes to getting rid of a mattress, the size and bulk can be an issue. Many organizations that take donations will not accept mattresses, so it may seem like the dump is the only option. Waiting for bulk trash pickup may mean storing the mattress for weeks, and that can be a pain. Taking it to the landfill yourself can also be difficult if you don’t have a truck or other vehicle capable of hauling the mattress.

The best option for disposing of an old mattress in North Houston is to call Junk King. We will haul away old mattresses plus old furniture, appliances, televisions, hot tubs, yard waste, home construction debris, and much, much more. You don’t need to haul the mattress down to the curb or even take it out of your bedroom, either. Just strip the sheets of it and we’ll do the rest. We will take it out carefully, too, so nothing is damaged and no one is injured.

How Much Does Mattress Removal in North Houston Cost?

Getting rid of a mattress can be costly. The last thing you want is to have your old mattress loaded up only to be hit with an expensive bill containing multiple surprise fees. With Junk King, that’s never the case. All of our estimates are fully transparent and include all fees and other costs. We will provide you with a free, no-obligation estimate upfront, too, so you will know the full price before anything is removed from your home.

To get an estimate, all you have to do is give us a call at 1-888-888-JUNK. One of our team members will ask you about what you need hauled away. If it’s just a single mattress, we can give you a quote over the phone. If you have multiple items or even entire houses full of stuff to get rid of, we may need to see it in person. If that’s the case, we’ll schedule an in-person quote. Often, we bring one of our large trucks to these meetings so if you agree to the quote, we get started right away.

In addition to a phone or in-person quote, we also provide estimates via text. Just send us pictures of what you need us to haul away to 1-737-888-5865. We also have an online pricing tool that can help you get an idea of how much to budget for junk hauling services. It’s not always as accurate as a quote calculated by a person, however, so do keep that in mind when using it.

Junk King North Houston Dumpster Rental

How to Make the Most of Your North Houston Dumpster Rental

When you have a small about of junk, hiring a junk removal service is the right move. However, if you have a lot of stuff or are doing a project that will create more trash as you go, having a dumpster may be a better option. When you do look into dumpster rental, however, you want to make certain you’re getting the best value. While the base price is one of the factors to consider, you also want to look at how you can make the most of your dumpster so you don’t have to keep it longer than necessary. Here are a few tips to help you efficiently utilize your dumpster so you get everything cleared out but don’t pay more than you have to.

Know if You Really Need a Dumpster

When you search for “junk removal near me,” you’ll likely see many results for junk hauling services as well as dumpster rental. Which one is right for you? It really depends on your project. If you rent a dumpster and then realize you don’t need it, you may have wasted money. The main thing to think about is whether or not you need a place to put junk during your project. If you’re sorting through a garage, basement, attic, or entire house, you’ll likely be putting things into piles to keep or trash. Having a dumpster you can take all the trash items to immediately helps free up space, making it easier to sort through the rest of the items.

For a project such as remodeling your kitchen, renovating a bathroom, or removing an old shed or deck, you’ll need some place to put the old items you’re removing. A dumpster is a great place for this. If you pile up the old wood, cabinets, or flooring, it can present a safety issue. Someone could trip over the debris. It’s also possible someone could get hurt on the nails, screws, and other fasteners sticking out of the trash. Keeping this garbage contained in a dumpster is safer.

If you have a few pieces of furniture or know that you’ll be able to get everything together in one pile, calling a service that handles junk removal in North Houston could be your better option. The only downside is that you may have to wait a day or two before the items can be picked up. If you’ve got a large pile of debris, it can be a risk to others, especially pets and children.

Have a Plan for Your Houston Dumpster Rental

Before you even look into Houston dumpster rental, you want to have an idea of your project and the trash it’s likely to create. If you’re cleaning out your basement, how much do you anticipate will be trash? If you’re doing a home remodel, when will you have debris to take out? It can be hard to have a set schedule, but you should have a good idea of when you’ll need the dumpster and when you’ll be finished with it.

With a plan, you’ll know when you’re ready to rent the dumpster. You’ll know when it should be delivered and when it should be picked up. This way, you’re not spending money on a dumpster that’s just sitting in your driveway empty.

Another reason having a plan will help is that you can arrange the rest of your schedule. You can put in for the right days off, arrange for your pets to be boarded or for childcare, and schedule other things that may take you away from the project. By making your remodel, cleanout, or other task the focus for a few days, you’ll get everything wrapped up quickly.

Arrange for Help with the Project

The amount of help, if any, will depend on what type of project you’re doing. If you’re doing a DIY remodel, having a few people on hand to help you with demo will make it go very quickly. You’ll have everything torn up and out to the dumpster within a day or two. If you’re cleaning out the basement or a loved one’s home, you may also want to have some help. You may need someone to assist you with moving heavy items out to the dumpster as you sort through them. If you’re dealing with the home of a loved one who has recently passed, having someone there for emotional support can also be very helpful.

If you’re having a contractor handle some or all of your remodel, they may arrange your residential dumpster rental for you. If they don’t, be sure you know when they will begin your project and when they will want the dumpster to be ready for use. If there’s any change in their schedule, you’ll want to know as soon as possible so you can reschedule the dumpster drop-off.

New call-to-action

Pack Your Dumpster Correctly

When some people fill a dumpster, they simply start throwing stuff in it. However, this often leads to empty spaces, which means the dumpster fills up more quickly. You may call to have it picked up and emptied when, if it had been packed differently, you could have put a lot more in it.

The key to getting the most out of your dumpster rental in Houston is to put the largest stuff on the bottom. Put your furniture, large rolls of carpet, big sections of removed tile, and other items in first. Try your best to spread the weight out, and be sure to fill in small spaces with whatever little trash you have. It can be difficult to do if you’re pulling stuff out and sorting through it as you go. Furniture may have a lot of stuff on it you need to sort through first, but if possible, set that trash to one side until you can get to any furniture you plan on putting in the dumpster.

As you go, continue to try to fill in any gaps or other spaces. You may be able to squeeze some bags of trash between items, so do that whenever possible. Don’t worry about filling up every single inch of space, but do try to arrange things so that you’re not wasting a lot of the dumpster.

For Junk King, doing this can save you money. We charge by how much of the dumpster you fill up. If you have less than half of it full, you’ll pay less than if it was full to the top. Being careful with how you pack the dumpster, then, isn’t just about wasting space—it’s about saving money.

Why Junk King?

When you’re looking for Houston dumpster rental, why should you choose Junk King? In addition to our unique pricing structure, there are several reasons why we’re one of the top names in junk removal. Here are some of the things that set us apart from the competition:

We Take Just About Everything

Some companies that handle junk removal in Houston North have a very limited number of things they will take. Some won’t dispose of old mattresses, while others may not take electronic waste or want any type of yard debris. Junk King, however, takes almost anything. The only thing we cannot dispose of is hazardous waste, and that’s due to the risk it presents to our employees. We will take old furniture, appliances, televisions, electronics, yard waste, trash, mattresses, construction debris, and even old hot tubs. Our junk removal dumpster policy is the same as our junk hauling policy: anything not hazardous is fine!

We Donate and Recycle

When you look into Houston dumpster rental options, you won’t find many that will donate or recycle items. However, Junk King is dedicated to sending as little to the landfill as possible. We will sort through everything that’s in your dumpster and take out items that are still useful, including furniture and appliances. We send these to local charity organizations that will pass them on to those who need them.

Once that’s done, we sort out any items that can be recycled. If you have something that has components that can be recycled, such as the metal in appliances, we will remove it for recycling. Few companies will go this far, but we truly believe that our environment must be protected.

We Offer Commercial Dumpster Rental, Too

Junk King North Houston Resources When Moving to Houston

Resources to Know Before Moving to North Houston

Are you thinking about moving to Houston? There are a lot of reasons why you may want to call this city your new home. Before you make the move, though, there are some things you’ll want to learn about. By having these resources on hand, your move will be much easier. Read on to learn about how to make your move to Houston as stress-free as possible!

Learn About the Community Before Moving to Houston

The first thing you should do is learn a little bit about the city. Houston has a varied and long history that makes it a very interesting place to live. For example, it’s home to both NASA and Beyonce. While those pieces of trivia may not impact your daily life, there are other facts that will. For example, the temperature in Houston is typically humid and warm. Even the winter months don’t get too cold. During the summer, you’ll want to be prepared with sunscreen and mosquito repellant.

Another fact about Houston is that it’s large. The city is sprawling, and public transportation hasn’t caught up yet. This means you’ll need a car to get around, especially if you’re living towards the edge of the city. You can also expect your commutes to be pretty long if you’re in the suburbs and work downtown.

Housing Prices Are Reasonable

While housing costs across the country have risen, Houston has remained affordable when compared to New York, LA, Chicago, Denver, and other comparable metro areas. The housing market here has continued to grow, which means there are a good number of new homes available. One of the first steps when moving to Houston is to secure housing, and you should be able to do that without too much trouble. In addition to purchasing a house, there are also a good number of houses for rent in Houston, Texas.

Line Up a Short-Term Rental if You Need to

If you’re moving to Houston from several states away, buying a house can be challenging. Fortunately, you will find a number of apartments in Houston TX that you can rent for short periods of time. While doing an online search may be the best place to start, if you’re moving for a job, be sure to ask your new employer if they have any connections. Many large corporations may even provide temporary housing for a few months until you can get settled. Others may provide a small moving stipend or other benefits. It never hurts to ask. Even if the company doesn’t provide any benefits on its own, it may be able to refer you to apartment complexes or other housing resources.

Get Your Utilities Lined Up

Whether you’re buying or renting, you’re likely going to have to have at least a few Houston County utilities turned on and put in your name. This includes electric, gas, water, garbage, internet, and any other utility you may need at your new home. For your water and garbage, you’ll want to contact the City of Houston. For electricity, your provider will likely be TXU Energy, a company that serves around seven million residents and businesses in the Houston area. If you will have natural gas at your home, you will likely need to contact CenterPoint Energy. There are a number of home phone, internet, and cable television providers in the city, so you’ll have your choice of most of the major names in those industries.

Look into Other Services You May Need

You may need other services in Houston, especially during your move. For example, if you plan to do any remodeling to a house before moving in, you may need to look into junk removal services so you aren’t stuck with the debris. You may also want to find a handyman or a contractor to assist you in any small renovations or updates you want to do. Knowing where the closest hardware store in Houston is will be very helpful, too. You may need to find a flooring store, an electrician, or any number of contractors. The internet can be your friend, but you can also talk to your new coworkers or neighbors for recommendations.

There are a couple of things many people do right away when they move into a new home. First, they hire one of the many different cleaning services in Houston to deep clean the house. Even if it all looks very clean, it never hurts to have a professional do a deep clean and disinfect everything. This way, you know you’re starting off in a clean home. Second, if you’ve bought the house, you will likely want to change the locks. You never know who the previous owner may have given keys to, so it’s always best to switch them out. You can hire someone to do it, or you can also buy a set of new locks and install them yourself.

Heavy Lifting, Without Moving A Muscle

Find New Healthcare Providers

Another thing you’ll need to do if you’re moving from out of state to Houston is to provide new healthcare providers, including a primary care physician and a dentist. Again, you can ask around for recommendations or look online. If you’re transferring to the Houston office of your current company, changing doctors will be easier since you’ll already have your insurance established. You’ll be able to see who is in-network in Houston and find someone taking new patients.

If you’re joining a new company, you may have to wait until all of the paperwork is done and your insurance has kicked in. This may leave you with several months of no coverage or doctor. Talk to your current doctor about renewing your prescriptions early or getting a three-month supply so you don’t have to worry about running out.

Go to the Local Post Office

Of course, you’ll want to be sure your mail gets delivered to you. In order to fully change your address, you may need to pay a visit to the local post office in Houston. You may need to contact your previous post office, too, to make certain your mail is forwarded. Depending on where you live, you may need to rent a post office box, too. Once you have your new address, you’ll need to begin changing it with any magazines, bills, and other services as well as sharing it with your friends and family.

Read Up on the Weather and Know What to Do

Another resource you want to have on hand, especially if you’ve always lived in the northern part of the country, is how to handle the tropical storms and hurricanes that occasionally hit Houston. Do you know where local shelters are or how to protect your home when one of these strong storms is predicted? You should also invest in a disaster preparedness kit. This isn’t to say that you need to be alarmed at every storm, but if you’ve never lived in an area that has hurricanes, it’s always best to understand what happens during one and what you should do to remain safe.

Clean Out Your Current Home

Whether you live out of state or near Houston and are moving to another part of the city, you may have a lot of junk to get rid of before you move. You’ll want to look into junk removal in Houston North if you live in the area. Even if you don’t, you may decide that some of the things you moved aren’t going to work in your new home. You may also have boxes and other packing materials that you need to get rid of. Junk removal services can help with that.

Instead of searching for “junk removal near me,” call Junk King of North Houston. We will come haul away furniture, old appliances, trash, yard debris, electronics, mattresses, and much more. If your new home came with a broken hot tub, we’ll even haul it away for you. As long as it doesn’t contain hazardous waste, we’ll get rid of it.

Learn More About Items We Take

We Donate and Recycle

Even though you may have moved furniture that you now realize doesn’t have a place in your new Houston home, it may not be garbage. Junk King is one of the few junk haulers that doesn’t simply take everything to the dump. Instead, we’ll carefully go through anything you have us pick up to separate out what can still be used and what can be recycled. If it’s in good shape, we’ll pass it on to a local charitable organization. They will see that it gets to someone who can use it.

If your furniture or other items aren’t in good condition, we will break them down and recycle whatever components can be reused. Our goal is to send as little to the landfill as possible. There are some items that simply cannot be reused or recycled, of course, but we do try to limit what we dump to just those items.

Whether you need junk removal in North Houston to get rid of things before you move or after you’ve completed some renovation projects on your new home, Junk King is here for you. Contact us today at 1-888-888-JUNK or text us at 1-737-888-5865.

Is your backyard ready for the spring and summer? You may have it set up like you usually do, but have you always wanted to get more out of the space? If you haven’t transformed your backyard into your dream oasis, there’s no better time to start than now. There are so many different options for a backyard, and most of them don’t even take that much time or money. Here are a few ideas for transforming your backyard into a dream paradise and how Junk King of North Houston can help.

What Is Your Dream Backyard?

Before you can begin transforming the space, you need to know exactly what you want. Sometimes this isn’t easy, especially if you have a fairly small yard. One thing that some people get stuck on is that they see things such as patios, decks, and sheds as permanent parts of their yard. They aren’t. You can take down a deck or look into shed removal. While this may not always be something you want to do, you may want to consider it. For example, if you want to add a pool but don’t have space because of a large shed, removing the shed may be the right option for you. On the other hand, if you use that shed to store a lot of yard equipment and other things, taking it down may not be on the table. Still, it’s important to be open to your options.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you can do backyard renovations in stages. This isn’t necessarily something you can do with a kitchen or bathroom, but it is possible outside. You can change up your landscaping and take down a tree this spring, then build a deck in the fall or next year. If you’re on a limited budget, splitting your project into multiple stages may be the best option. The only downside here is that you may need to bring in a junk removal service several times.

Also, remember that you don’t need a professional to do everything. You can take out bushes, move flowerbeds, and even demolish your old deck by yourself. While you may need an expert to build a new deck or take down a tree, there are some things you can do by yourself if you have the equipment. When it comes to debris removal, though, you may need to call Junk King. You may not want to make multiple trips to the landfill or have the necessary vehicle to haul away all of the debris left behind from a large shed.

Book a Touchless Appointment Today!

Start with Removing What You Don’t Need

The first step to building your dream backyard is to remove the landscaping and structures that are in your way. Start with things that are falling apart. You may have a really old shed, a kid’s playhouse, or a treehouse that is no longer used and is showing its age. Often, these old structures are on the verge of falling down on their own, so you may just need to bring in an expert at junk removal in Houston North.

With a quick call to Junk King, you can have those old structures gone. While you may do a search for “shed removal near me,” you want to be certain the company you work with is vetted and will do the job without any hidden fees. With Junk King, you know exactly what you’ll get—excellent service at an affordable price.

Taking out flowerbeds and bushes is also fairly simple. However, when it comes to large trees, you may want to have a professional handle it. This is especially true if the tree hangs over into a neighbor’s yard or has large branches out over your roof. The last thing you want is for the tree to come down unexpectedly and damage someone’s property. Junk King can also take away any limbs and other yard waste, so we’ll deal with those bushes, branches, and other debris for you.

While wooden decks can be disassembled and paver paths and patios removed, concrete is another story. Again, it may be best to bring in someone with the right demo equipment and experience. If you’d rather do it yourself, you may be able to rent a jackhammer from a local home improvement store.

What Do You Add to Your Backyard?

Now that you’ve cleared out the things you don’t need, it’s time to start adding in those items that will make your backyard perfect. There’s a lot you can do here, but you don’t want to get too carried away. You may want to leave some grassy areas, especially if you have children or dogs. They’ll need a place to play. Here are a few things you might add to your backyard:

A Patio

If you want to have an outdoor entertaining space and don’t have a patio, now’s the time to add one in. You may also want to expand the small patio you do have. Adding or expanding a concrete patio often requires hiring those who understand how to pour concrete. However, there is another option: pavers. You can purchase pavers at many home improvement stores. You’ll need to level the space, of course, but once you’ve done that, it’s really just a matter of laying the pavers out. You can pick different colors or sizes to make a fun pattern that reflects your unique style.

A Deck

A deck can be similar to a patio, of course, especially if you have a single-story home. However, if you have a two-story home, you have more options. You can add a deck off your upstairs bedroom to create a truly luxurious primary suite. Even if you don’t do that, you can still install a raised deck that’s attached to the side of your home and accessed via an outdoor stairway. This is a great way of adding more entertainment space to a very small yard. If you have a deck already, you can extend it. In some cases, you may need to look into deck removal and replacement, especially if the deck is on the older side.

Lighted Walkways

Adding a paver stone walkway or two helps connect your backyard visually, plus it creates a dry path for you to use after it rains. Pavers are very easy to use to create a path, plus you can coordinate them with your paver patio. After you decide where the pavers are going, you can place some outdoor solar lights near them to light up the path. While the lights may not always look right—you may not want to use them if your path goes through the middle of your backyard, for example—they are a great way of ensuring people don’t trip.

An Outdoor Kitchen

Now you’re moving into backyard transformations that cost more money! That said, an outdoor kitchen doesn’t have to be elaborate. If you already have a great grill, you may just need a few cabinets and an outdoor sink. If you really want to go all out, though, of course you can add a refrigerator, built-in cooktop, and more. It all depends on your budget and your dreams. An outdoor kitchen is the perfect addition for true indoor-outdoor living, though, especially if you plan on eating outdoors often.

A Pool

If you really want to spend some money and transform your backyard, put in a pool. This is going to be a major project, and you’ll have to hire contractors to do it. However, the end result can be an amazing space that you use all the time during the warmer months. If you’re putting in a pool, you’re likely going to need to work with junk removal to get rid of some of the things in your yard. You may need to remove a shed, take down a tree, or have a patio or deck taken out.

When a loved one passes, there’s a lot to go through. In the short term, you have to start telling family and friends the sad news, which can be very emotionally taxing. Then you typically plan a funeral or other type of memorial. Once all of these tasks are done, you’re still not finished. While you may have completed much of the personal part of the loss of a loved one, there are still the legal tasks to deal with—filing for any life insurance policies, closing accounts, and managing their estate.

The last of these tasks can be especially taxing because you may have to face selling their property, including their home. What do you do with all of their possessions? While you and other family members may want to take some keepsakes, there are likely things that no one will want. In some cases, they may have items that are simply no longer usable. If you’re in need of help with junk removal in North Houston, Junk King can help. Here are some thoughts on handling a loved one’s property and how to go about dispersing it.

Wait Until You Are Ready

Even with a will in hand, there’s an unfortunate truth about the probate process: it’s going to take months, if not a year or more. This means multiple court dates, paperwork to file, and other things that you will want to consult a lawyer about. The one good thing about this lengthy process is that it does mean you don’t have to immediately start sorting through your loved one’s possessions. You don’t want to put it off for too long, but you do have time to process your grief. It can be very hard to walk into a loved one’s home in the days or weeks after their passing and start sorting through their property without breaking down. Even if you want a few months, you’re still going to be hit with their loss. That’s okay. Don’t start cleaning up until you’re ready if that’s an option.

Sadly, sometimes it’s not. If your loved one was in an assisted living center or other care facility, they may not be able to give you that time. In that case, it helps to bring in another family member or close friend to lean on. Together, you may be able to handle this task more easily than if you were on your own. The workers at the care facility are also a resource you can lean on. They may be able to help box up your loved one’s personal items.

If you need to get rid of furniture or other large items, there are assisted living cleanout services available. Junk King doesn’t just clean out homes—we also assist in removing junk and other items from apartments, assisted living homes, and more. You don’t have to handle all of the work yourself.

Have Help

Dealing with the loss of a loved one isn’t easy on the best of days, and cleaning out their home is certainly not going to be one of those. If at all possible, have someone with you. Having a friend or family member with you will give you emotional support as well as make it easier to sort through items. They may be able to view items with a more objective eye and help you see what are priceless heirlooms and what you can let go.

Have a Plan

With time to help you address your grief and a trusted friend by your side, it’s time to create a plan for dealing with your loved one’s physical property. First, take stock of what you’re dealing with. Are there a lot of items in the home that you know are garbage? If your loved one had hoarder tendencies or has a basement or attic full of old, broken things, you may have a lot of garbage.

You may need to look into junk removal services, but you may also want to consider renting a dumpster. Junk King offers affordable dumpster rental that’s perfect for a home cleanout. Our dumpsters are designed to be small enough to fit in a driveway without damaging it but provide enough space for a large amount of garbage.

Why use a dumpster? It’s a good option if you have to sort through everything and separate out the good from the junk. During an estate cleanout, you’re likely going to come across things you need to keep but also things you don’t. Having a dumpster nearby means you can immediately take out the junk so it’s not in your way. You can declutter the property as you sort through items, which can be very helpful if you know you’re going to put the property up for sale once you’ve finished the estate cleanout.

If you decide not to rent a dumpster, be ready to give Junk King a call once you’re done with the cleanout. It’s very likely that you’ll have a good amount of stuff you want to get rid of, and we’ll be glad to come haul it away for you.

Get Firm Commitments from People who Want Items

One of the worst parts about dealing with someone’s estate is when a family member says they want something but doesn’t come get it. You may be stuck holding a bedroom set, large sofas, or other items for weeks or months while a relative says they’ll be over to get them “soon.” If you don’t have room for them in your home, you may end up holding on to your loved one’s house or paying for a storage unit while you wait.

Make certain anyone you offer items to understands that they need to pick them up quickly. You can’t hold on to them forever. While letting others take some of your loved one’s possessions is great, you’re the one who is stuck storing them, and that can cost you money.

Donating Usable Items

If you have furniture, appliances, and other items that are in good condition but that no one wants, you should consider donating them. This is a great way of passing on usable items, helping those in need, and protecting the environment. However, one roadblock many people face with donations is that they have to deliver the items to the donation center. Some organizations may have trucks capable of picking up large items, but many don’t.

However, this is where Junk King can once again help you. While we are a junk removal company, we do more than simply haul items straight to the landfill. We are dedicated to reducing our impact on the environment, and that means we donate or recycle as much as we can. When we pick up items, we will sort through them and set aside anything that is still in usable condition. We then take these items to one of our local charities and other partner organizations. They either use the items themselves or pass them on to those in need.

If something is damaged beyond usability, we look at whether or not it can be recycled. If it can be, we send it to a local recycling center. Even if the entire item can’t be recycled, we will remove any recyclable components. At the end of the day, only a fraction of what we pick up when doing junk clean up actually ends up in the landfill. We don’t charge our customers anything for donating or recycling their items. This service is included in everything we do, including our dumpster rentals.

Heavy Lifting, Without Moving A Muscle

Why Junk King?

Why should Junk King be your estate cleanout specialists? Simple—we offer affordable, transparent pricing along with full-service junk removal in Houston North. We take anything as long as it isn’t hazardous. This includes garbage, of course, but we also take old appliances, furniture, yard waste, construction debris, hot tubs, mattresses, electronic waste, and much more. If it doesn’t contain hazardous materials, we’ll likely haul it away for you. If it does, we can usually point you towards a disposal service that handles those types of materials.

When you search for “junk removal near me” you may find that many seem like they’re affordable, but once you get into the cost, you find a number of hidden fees and other charges. With Junk King, there’s never a question of how much does an estate cleanout cost. You’ll know upfront.

With a project as large as cleaning out a home, we will typically need to come in person to put together an estimate. If you only have a few things, we may be able to give an accurate quote over the phone or via text. However, if you have a good amount of items for us to haul away, we’ll need to see what you’ve got. When we do an in-person estimate, we bring our full crew and truck whenever possible. This means we can get to work as soon as you approve the quote. Often, we’ll have everything taken care of within a few hours or an afternoon.

Junk King North Houston Dispose of Paint in Houston

Safe Ways to Dispose of Paint in North Houston

Are you looking for ways to dispose of paint in Houston? If your paint is already hardened, then we can help here at Junk King North Houston! For those who still have liquid paint, then read below for ways of using or treating your paint so we can safely dispose of your paint for you!

Ready To Book? Click & Save $20!

With many household waste products, disposal is simple: just throw it in the trash. The city’s weekly trash pickup will take almost all common trash and waste. However, there are some things that the city won’t take, including anything hazardous. Paint falls into this category. What can you do with any old paint you have? Some people leave it in the garage for years, letting it take up room. Others do a search for “paint disposal near me,” but even then, they may not find a lot of options. If you’re in need of paint disposal services in North Houston, Junk King is here for you.

The question of how to dispose of paint is a little more complicated than throwing it out. Before you call us to get rid of old paint, though, you will want to make certain that you’ve prepared it for disposal. You should never try to dispose of liquid paint. Instead, there are a few methods you can use to make it safe to handle and dispose of.

How to Store Paint Before Disposing of It

Most people don’t look into paint disposal as soon as they’re doing painting a room or other home improvement project. Instead, they store the paint for a short period of time to make certain they don’t need to do any small touchups. If you’re going to do this, you need to make certain you’ve sealed up the paint can. First, wipe off the top of the can if any paint has gotten on it. Next, place the lid firmly onto the can and tap it down with a rubber mallet. Tap all around the lid so it’s locked into place on all sides.

If you don’t have a rubber mallet, you may be tempted to use a standard hammer. However, this can dent and damage the lid. It may no longer fit correctly if you do that. Instead, put something over the lid such as a piece of wood and then hit it with the hammer. The force will transfer through the wood into the lid, tapping it down without damaging it.

Next, be sure you store the paint correctly. Many people put it in their garage or in a shed, but these areas can get too hot during the summer. This can dry out latex paint and, if the temperature is high enough, actually cause oil-based paints to combust. Instead, you always want to keep paint in a cool location. If you have a basement, that’s the ideal place for paint because it’s both cool and dark. Always put paint cans on a shelf instead of on the floor to help keep moisture away from them. If your cans regularly come into contact with water, they can rust and the paint can leak out.

How Long Does Paint Last?

If you are going to save paint for use later, it’s important you know how long it will last so you can dispose of it when it’s no longer useable. If it’s subjected to hot or cold temperatures, it’s going to go bad very quickly. If stored correctly, though, paint can last for up to ten years if it’s water-based or latex. Oil paints can last a little longer, with most going bad around the 15 year mark.

How can you tell if your paint is still good or if it’s time to get rid of it? If it’s water-based or latex paint, smell it. If it’s rancid, it’s time to look at your options for paint disposal in Houston. Also, look to see if it’s separated or if there’s any hard paint on the sides or bottom of the can. If you’re able to mix it up and create a smooth paint that’s the correct color, it’s still good. You may want to test it on something first, though, to make sure it spreads evenly and smoothly without lumps.

If you’ve stored your oil-based paint correctly, it’s likely to be usable. Just stir it up and test it on some newspaper or other piece of scrap first to make certain it’s still good.

Junk King North Houston Paint Disposal

Finding Use for Left Over Paint

Before you begin looking into paint disposal options, make sure you don’t need the paint any longer. Make any touchups you need to make, and be sure you know the specific paint color name or color code so you can purchase more if you need it later. If you only have a little bit of paint left, you may not care to keep it. However, if you have half a can or more, you might want to look at other projects so you don’t waste money.

If you painted the exterior of your home, you may find other outdoor things to paint to match. For example, you could paint your doghouse or child’s playhouse. You could paint your mailbox or planters.

Inside, you can use leftover paint for just about anything. If you just painted your kitchen, you could paint a set of living room end tables to match and draw the color throughout the house. You could paint bookshelves or a bench. While you don’t want to paint everything the same color as the walls, you may find ways of using the same color here and there to make your home’s color scheme feel more cohesive.

Another option is to give the paint to someone who has a use for it. If you have friends or family who are painters, do woodworking, or do a lot of DIY projects, they may have use for it. Schools or local community centers may also take it for projects.

How to Dispose of Paint in Houston

If you have no need for the paint and can’t find anyone who will take it, it’s time to start looking for “paint disposal near me.” However, as mentioned earlier, you do have to make certain you’ve properly prepared the paint first so you don’t cause any harm to the environment by throwing it out.

Latex paint can be dealt with in a few ways. First, many people use the kitty litter paint disposal method. This is simple and very easy to do. Just add an equal amount of kitty litter to the can of paint. The litter will absorb the liquid, solidifying it into a single clump in the can. You can then get rid of the can. Do not put the lid back on the can.

If you have a lot of paint left and can’t mix in an equal amount of litter, find a trash can or a box and line it with a trash bag. Pour the paint into the bag, then add in the litter. Once it’s solidified, tie up the bag and throw it away. Typically, it takes about an hour for the mixture to solidify.

Another option is to purchase a commercial paint hardener. These products are designed to quickly harden the paint so it can be disposed of. You can purchase a paint hardener at most hardware or home improvement stores that sell paint.

Paint disposal for oil-based paints isn’t quite as easy. There is no paint hardener or trick with kitty litter here. Instead, oil-based paint is classified as a hazardous substance, so you can’t just throw it away. Instead, you have to take it to a specific drop-off location or disposal facility. The city of Houston has several Environmental Service Centers that will accept old oil-based paints, including any paint that contains alkyd or is listed as combustible or flammable.

Junk King Can Haul Off Hardened Paint

If you have multiple cans of paint that need to be disposed of, there’s no need to wonder about throwing it away. Can you throw away paint? Yes, but if you’re having Junk King come to pick up other stuff, go ahead and put your old paint with it. We do ask that you add cat litter or a hardener to it to protect our team. If you’ve done that, we’ll take as much paint as you need us to. For oil-based paints, you’ll need to take them to the appropriate center. We cannot take any liquid paint.

Other Items We Handle

In addition to handling the proper disposal of paint that has been prepared, we also haul off much more. We take furniture, appliances, electronic waste, hot tubs, mattresses, and even things like yard debris and DIY project waste. As long as it isn’t hazardous, our team can haul it away for you. If you do have hazardous materials, we may be able to recommend the proper way to dispose of them or refer you to experts who specialize in disposal of such materials.

Property Management Companies

We work with many property management companies to clean out apartments and other rental homes after tenants leave. While most tenants do take everything with them or hire us to get rid of things they don’t want, that’s not always the case. Tenants who are evicted may leave behind a lot of trash. Those who have to move quickly may also decide to abandon some of their property instead of putting it in storage or hiring a moving company. Even those who have a planned move may decide to leave garbage behind.

Most property management companies simply don’t have the time to deal with getting rid of all of this junk. They may not have the personnel to handle large furniture removal or the right vehicle to get it all to the city dump or other location. In the case of an estate cleanout, Junk King will bring our large truck and empty out the entire apartment or house. We work quickly, so property management companies can get the property back on the market as soon as possible.

Assisted Living Facilities

Assisted living facilities are very similar to apartment complexes in many ways. They do tend to generate a large amount of waste, especially larger facilities with a hundred or more units. When someone moves into assisted living, they may actually need our residential services because they may be downsizing. If they later have to move into a full care facility, they may have even smaller spaces or may have to share a space. In that case, if no one is available to take their furniture, the assisted living facility may call on us to take it away.

This is one instance where we know the furniture and other items we’re removing are likely to be in good shape. These items are typically set aside to be donated to local North Houston charities and other organizations that help those in need. Those living in assisted living may also call us when they get new furniture or a new mattress. With our full-service junk hauling, there’s no need for residents to move anything. We will take furniture, appliances, and anything else regardless of where it is in the home. For those who aren’t able to move furniture on their own, there’s no need. We’ll take care of it.

North Houston Real Estate Agents

Likewise, real estate agents may have to deal with properties that are full of junk. A landlord may decide to sell a home that their last tenant abandoned, but they don’t want to deal with cleaning it out first. They just want to sell it as-is and make a little money.

Some real estate agents also recommend us to clients who have stuff to get rid of. They know that Junk King is dedicated to providing high-quality furniture removal to everyone we work with. They also know that we will donate anything in good condition, which many of our residential customers want.

Real estate agents also often call upon us to haul away yard waste and other junk left outdoors. We assist with foreclosure and estate cleanout, too, and again donate as much as we possibly can from these jobs. For our commercial clients, we can help with office cleanouts and will haul away older furniture and other items you no longer need.

HVAC & Plumbing Companies

HVAC and plumbing companies have a lot of waste to get rid of. They typically remove old furnaces, plumbing, and other items from their client’s homes when they have to do repairs, but then the company has to do something with this garbage. They often turn to Junk King because they know we partner with recycling companies. HVAC units contain a good amount of metal, while many pipes are made out of recyclable plastics. While used piping is typically not recyclable, anything clean can be.

We make sure as much of these materials as possible get recycled. Our HVAC and plumbing clients don’t have to worry about handling that themselves, nor do they have to worry about transporting large amounts of recyclables or dealing with getting trash to the landfill.

Manufacturing

Manufacturers also often generate a large amount of waste and are in need of junk removal in Houston. Creating products typically leaves leftover material that has to be disposed of. Raw resource packaging is also an issue for many manufacturers. Junk King helps these clients by removing all of this junk, recycling what we can. We often pick up waste from these clients on a weekly or bi-weekly basis due to how much they produce.

Repair Shops

Vehicle repair shops, likewise, do often have packaging, leftover materials, and old items that need to be hauled away and recycled. Things like broken windshields need to be safely disposed of. Our team will carefully handle anything dangerous like broken glass, metal with sharp edges, and other items. While we cannot deal with anything hazardous, we can deal with most vehicle salvage and damaged parts.

Heavy Lifting, Without Moving A Muscle

Woodworking Shops

Woodworking shops typically have a lot of small bits of wood and bags full of sawdust that needs to be disposed of. They may have old nails, screws, and boards if they do repairs on antiques that need to be safely handled, too. We’re able to take much of this waste to a recycler. Like manufacturers, our woodworking clients may need us to pick up waste regularly to help them keep their shops clean.

While we can take sawdust, there are actually many different ways woodworkers can make use of sawdust. They can use in gardens as a type of mulch to kill weeks. It can also be mixed into plant supplements, help provide traction in the snow, and even be used to clean up spills.

Welders in Houston

Welders, like woodworking shops, generate a large amount of waste that can be recycled. In this case, it’s mostly metal. We’re able to send a large amount of this metal waste to a local recycling facility. Welding also creates wastewater, which is not something we typically handle. However, we are able to take slag and other solid waste produced by welding.

Medical Facilities for Non-Bio Waste

We also work with medical facilities in North Houston. However, if these facilities handle bio waste, we’re unable to dispose of it. Any hazardous materials can be dangerous to our crews and need to be disposed of in accordance with specific regulations. That said, we do work with medical facilities for all of their non-hazardous wastes. We handle office cleanouts, bulk waste, and furniture removal for these clients.

North Houston Storage Facilities

Storage facilities look to junk removal in Houston when someone abandons their storage unit. Some people simply stop paying the monthly rental and tell the facility to keep whatever they had stored there. Others may simply disappear, leaving the unit and its contents fully abandoned. While storage facilities will take all of the proper steps to reach the individual and find out what they want done with their property, sometimes that’s not possible. In that case, we come in and empty out the unit.

Again, our goal here is to donate or recycle as much as possible. Some items left in storage facilities may be in great condition. Others may not be as useful and may ultimately need to be recycled or dumped. Either way, we will take our time going through these units and separating out what can be used or recycled.

While no one wants to replace their refrigerator, washer, dryer, stove, or other major appliance, unfortunately, you will likely have to do so from time to time. There may be times you willingly buy a new appliance in order to upgrade, but most people do tend to wait to do that until an appliance breaks down. When this occurs, you will need to purchase a new item and figure out how to deal with appliance disposal. It’s not always easy to get rid of an old appliance. Some of them have chemicals in them that have to be dealt with, while others are bulky and heavy to move.

When you’re ready to dump an old appliance, there are a few things to keep in mind. Here are some tips for dealing with these appliances and how you can get rid of them.

Is the Appliance Beyond Repair?

First, do you really need to replace the old appliance? Some repairs are fairly minor and can get you many more years of use out of the appliance. With dryers, for example, sometimes the issue is a small fuse that can be replaced in about five minutes and only costs a few dollars. Other times, however, the entire motor seizes up. When that occurs, it’s time to look for a replacement.

The main thing to consider when deciding if you should repair or replace an old appliance is cost. Some repairs are simply so costly that it makes more financial sense to replace the appliance. This is especially true if the appliance is fairly old. Even if it’s a little more to buy a replacement, you’re getting a newer model that may be more energy efficient. This could result in a net gain in the long run by lowering your energy bills.

Does Delivery Include Appliance Disposal?

Some companies are willing to deliver a new appliance and remove the old one. This old appliance removal often includes an additional charge, however. This extra cost may be more than you’re willing to pay. You also don’t know what will happen with the old appliance. Will it be sent to the landfill, or will the company send it to a recycling center? Few of these big box stores work with recycling partners, so you may be sending your old appliance straight to the dump.

If you’re having your HVAC unit replaced, it’s likely that the professionals doing so will handle the old furnace removal. You can only have these units worked on by those who are certified to do so. Unlike with other appliances, you know you’ll have experts delivering and installing your new furnace or air conditioning unit, so you can reasonably expect them to haul off the old junk. The same is usually true for hot water heater removal and other major household systems. However, there are some that may charge you a fee for this. If you handle the removal and disposal yourself, you may be able to save some money.

Where Do You Store the Old Appliance?

If the store delivering your new appliance doesn’t offer to haul away the old one or you don’t want them to, what do you do with it? You’ll need to find some place to store the old appliance. Most people would put it in the garage. However, if your garage is on the small side or is fairly full, you may not have space to put it there and still park your car.

In that case, you may decide to put the old appliance outside on your back porch or even at the curb. After all, what does it matter if your old refrigerator or stove gets rained on? If you do this, make certain you tape the doors shut. You don’t want anyone or anything to get trapped inside. In fact, you may even want to take the doors off if that’s an option. There’s always the risk that kids will play in old appliances or that an animal will get trapped inside.

Using Bulk Trash Pickup

Some people put their appliances out for the city to pick up on bulk trash day. While this sounds like a very easy solution to appliance disposal, there are a few downsides. First, you have to get the old appliance out of your home and down to the curb. This can be very difficult if you live by yourself. You don’t want to hurt yourself or cause others to get hurt, which can easily happen if you’re dealing with old refrigerators or washing machines. If the appliance is on the second floor or in your basement, it can be even more difficult, and the risk of injury greatly increases.

Then there’s the fact that Houston only offers bulk waste pickup every other month. If you miss the scheduled pickup day, you’ll have to wait until the next one rolls around. This means you may have that old appliance sitting around for almost two months. It will take up space and can present a risk if you have kids or small animals. If you leave it outside, there’s always the risk you could be fined if it can be seen from the street. Those who live in neighborhoods with an HOA will want to be especially careful with putting old appliances out.

Will the City of Houston Recycling Program Take Appliances?

The City of Houston provides its residents with a green recycling bin they can use to recycle plastics, paper, glass, and other basic items. While some metals such as tin and aluminum are accepted by the Houston recycling program, they don’t accept any appliances, cords, hoses, scrap metal, or other things related to appliances. If you want to recycle appliances, you’ll have to handle it yourself.

Going to a Recycling Center

One option is to take these appliances to a recycling center. However, again, there’s the issue of you doing all the work. You have to deal with things such as water softener removal. These systems aren’t as bulky as a refrigerator, but they’re still on the heavy side. If you’re not having the system replaced, you’ll have to figure out how to disconnect everything from your home, too. If you’re not comfortable doing that, you’ll have to pay someone.

Another concern is getting your old appliances to the recycling center. If you don’t have a truck or a large SUV, you may not be able to fit them in your vehicle. Dealing with small appliances isn’t that difficult—you could easily deal with microwave recycling. However, there may be no way for you to get a refrigerator, large chest freezer, or hot water heater to the recycling location. Also, there’s once again the issue of getting the old appliance out and into your vehicle. Lifting refrigerators into the bed of a truck is going to take several strong people.

We don’t want anything to go to waste.

When something isn’t functional, we send it off to one of our local recyclers. We work with them to disassemble appliances into their smaller, more easily recycled components. We even have professionals who handle the removal of refrigerants and other chemicals, so they are disposed of safely. All of this is done at no additional charge to you.
