Electronic Recycling Matters For Residents In The North San Diego Region

Electronic Waste

The residents of North County pride themselves on the natural beauty and charm of their piece of San Diego County. And part of that pride comes from all that they do to keep their corner of the county clean and environmentally safe.

And that includes supporting electronic recycling.

Who can blame us? North County is a geographically diverse and stunning region, not to mention the home of a wide range of community types. And, like much of California, it is a challenge to keep clean and safe from environmental threats like the toxins found in e-waste.

North San Diego County and the State of Electronic Recycling

What, exactly, is North County?

According to the website at Live Well San Diego,

“North County is the northern area of San Diego County, and consists of two regions with cities, communities, organizations and residents that work together to promote a healthy, safe and thriving region.”

And who are these residents and where do they live?

Comprising two relatively distinct regions, North County is made up of the North Coastal Region which consists of six cities – Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, Oceanside, Solana Beach and Vista – as well as a dozen smaller communities. This region accounts for a population of over 531,000 residents.

In addition, the bulk of North County is known as the North Inland Region with just the four cities of Escondido, Poway, San Marcos and the northern part of the City of San Diego, but dozens of smaller communities. Together they represent an additional population of nearly 597,000 residents living in North County.

So, with over a million inhabitants, disposing of and managing waste of all kinds is a problem. Especially e-waste, or electronic waste.

A Million Cellphones and Counting – The Need for Electronic Recycling

If you live in the North County area have you noticed that, when you’re out in public, it seems that just about everyone seems to own a cell phone? And, when you consider all the people working from home now in and around San Diego, you may realize that there are also multitudes of laptops and tablets out there, too.

And, statistically speaking, you’re right.

The Pew Research Center, for example, notes that most Americans – as in over 96 percent of us – now own a cellphone of some kind. They go on to add that,

“Along with mobile phones, Americans own a range of other information devices. Nearly three-quarters of U.S. adults now own desktop or laptop computers, while roughly half now own tablet computers and roughly half own e-reader devices.”

So, a good question to ask is what happens to all these electronic devices after they stop working or become outdated?

And if you throw in the wide variety of other types of electronics found in our homes, offices, schools, hospitals, and other places, the fate of all that “e-waste” should be concerning – and disconcerting!

A report from a few years ago determined that a record amount of e-waste was generated worldwide in 2019. It was further determined that it consisted of 53.6 million metric tons of discarded phones, computers, appliances, and other gadgets that were disposed of in some way or another.

And another report found that the United States alone produced 6.92 million tons of e-waste in 2019, which is equivalent to almost 46 pounds of electronic waste products per person.

But the news on how it was all disposed of wasn’t good…

The report also found that only 17 percent of all that e-waste was actually recycled. Which means that the vast majority of it – 83 percent or almost 45 million tons – was either sent to a landfill, incinerated, or shipped to illegal e-waste dumping grounds in third-world nations.

New call-to-action

Electronic Recycling Has Several Benefits

San Diego County, like much of the rest of the world, is growing in population. Which also means the volume of electronics used and disposed of is increasing each year. In fact, based on current trends, it is predicted that the total amount of e-waste generated worldwide will reach 67 million tons by 2030, which is almost double the output from 2014.

The good news is that North County residents do a far better job of recycling in general and with electronic recycling in particular.

But have you ever stopped to consider why recycling old electronics and e-waste is important?

Well, the folks at the Environmental Protection Agency – the EPA – have made it simple for us. They point out on their website that,

“Electronic products are made from valuable resources and materials, including metals, plastics, and glass, all of which require energy to mine and manufacture. Donating or recycling consumer electronics conserves our natural resources and avoids air and water pollution, as well as greenhouse gas emissions that are caused by manufacturing virgin materials.”

And, of course, there are multiple economic and environmental benefits to practicing electronic recycling. Here are some interesting e-waste recycling factoids to wrap your head around:

  • Recycling one million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by more than 3,500 US homes in a year.
  • For every million cell phones we recycle, 35 thousand pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered.
  • Per weight, recycling circuit boards contain more valuable material than mining for ore. Circuit boards have 40 to 800 times more gold than ore and 30 to 40 times more copper than ore.
  • Currently, 15% of gold, 15% of silver, and 5% of platinum found in e-waste are recycled. But if this reached 100%, it would generate an additional $12 billion in reusable resources.
