Junk King Rock Hill Owner Talks About Recycling on the QC Morning Show

Junk King Rock Hill owner Gustavo LaRotta made an appearance on the QC Morning on America Recycles Day to talk about rules and tips for recycling. In the five minute segment, LaRotta explains the importance of recycling, common items that are and aren’t recyclable, and how Junk King Rock Hill supports recycling.

LaRotta starts by explaining that only around 20% of recyclable items are actually recycled. This means approximately 80% of recyclable items are not actually being recycled. LaRotta then proceeds to talk through some recycling rules and tips so we as a county can work toward increasing this recycling percentage.

Next, LaRotta outlines three simple rules to follow when you go to recycle an item:

Rule #1: Paper, cans, cardboard, and bottles are all recyclable materials.

Rule #2: Keep foods and liquids out of recycling.

Rule #3: Plastic bags are NOT recyclable, so do NOT put recyclable items in plastic bags and then put it in your recycling bin!

LaRotta goes on to address some other common materials and if they can be recycled or not. A keyboard, though made of plastic, can not be placed in a normal recycling bin. This is due to the various wires and materials that make up the board. Another item, styrofoam, is also NOT recyclable, even though there are sometimes recycle symbols on it, in the city of Rock Hill, Charlotte, and the surrounding areas.

Cans and bottles are highly recyclable items, LaRotta explains. But, you have to make sure there is no remaining liquid in them! LaRotta encourages rinsing out your used can or bottle with some water before placing it in your recycling bin to ensure it can be recycled.

When asked why it’s important to know these tips and to recycle, LaRotta said, “It’s just the matter of keeping things out of the landfill, keeping our community clean, and being able to recycle and reuse as much as possible.”

Junk King Rock Hill has several eco-friendly junk removal practices in place to reduce contributions to landfills and support the environment. Once items are collected, the junk haulers sort through everything to determine what can be donated, recycled, or sent to a special facility. Junk King is proud of our recycling ideology and that up to 60% of all items hauled across all locations are recycled.
