Trash is beginning to pile up around the San Diego landfills at an alarming rate. According to a recent study that’s just been released, San Diego County’s daily waste disposal or person has increased from 5.5 pounds in 2016 to 5.6 pounds in 2017. Part of the reason attributed to this is a booming economy.

“When the economy’s booming and there’s more disposable income, people tend to buy more stuff. That means more packaging, and it tends to come with more waste,” said Nilmini Silva-Send to a local news station. She is part of the research team that compiled the data.

The Big Trash Makers

The biggest trash makers throughout San Diego can be found in Del Mar where the daily average per capita jumps to 17 pounds per person. That is followed by Coronado and Carlsbad. The cities that toss out the least amount of trash per person are Oceanside, Chula Vista and Imperial Beach. Unfortunately, most of this trash ends up in local landfills. That only contributes to an increase in greenhouse gases when all of that trash starts to decompose. This is why we can all do our part to minimize what ends up in a landfill.
