The Best Way to Get Rid of an Old Fence? Call Junk King San Diego!

Broken Fence Removal

updated 4/22/22

Do you need an old fence removed right away? Click Here.

They say that “good fences make good neighbors.” Along those same lines, however, it is important to mention that bad fences can certainly anger a neighbor as well. According to recent statistics, almost half of homes in the United States have some sort of fencing in the backyard.

Another 5 percent of homeowners have a fenced-in front yard as well. Fences don’t just mark property boundaries, but they can also offer a sense of security and privacy, and also help to keep pets (and young children) from wandering away from the home. Furthermore, a quality fence can also drive up a property’s value.

According to one real estate website, “privacy wood fences and solid fences like concrete or cast iron can net a profit of at least 50% of the material and installation costs on resale. So fencing materials play an integral role in determining the overall home value during appraisal.”

Despite all of these obvious advantages that come with installing a fence around your home and yard, every type of fencing material does eventually wear down and needs to be replaced. Wooden fences are prone to rotting, while chain link fences can quickly begin to rust if not properly maintained. Even stone, concrete, or brick fences may eventually need to be replaced once they fall into disrepair.

An Old Broken Fence Is Bad For Your San Diego Property

Fencing that is broken, dilapidated, or otherwise poorly maintained can be an eyesore on an otherwise beautiful home and property. If you are currently listing your home for sale on the local real estate market, an old and run-down fence will often be the first thing that potential buyers notice and will often make buyers reconsider making an offer.

Also, ragged and unkempt fencing may anger your neighbors and might even warrant notice from your local homeowners association. For businesses and other commercial properties, a decrepit and unmaintained fence is also a great way to turn away customers before they ever enter your business.

Though you may very well be able to restore or repair an old fence, in many cases a shabby fence is best torn down and thrown away to make room for a newer and more refined enclosure for your property. No matter how many coats of varnish you put on, rotting wood will eventually succumb to the forces of nature and eventually break down.

Learn about the importance of recycling.

Fencing Material Can Be Difficult to Dispose Of In San Diego

Unfortunately, fencing materials are notoriously heavy, bulky, and hard to get rid of. Trying to move thousands of old bricks or hundreds of wooden planks is several days of the job. Even if you have a huge pickup truck that you can use to haul away your broken-down fencing materials, many local dumps simply will not accept large amounts of old fencing materials because they are classified as construction and demolition (C&D) debris

In fact, the city of San Diego has recently revealed new C&D debris diversion requirements. According to the City´s Environmental Services, “for projects with permits issued on or after July 1, 2016, the diversion requirement will increase to 65 percent by weight of the total C&D debris generated by the project.

The diversion requirement for projects with permits issued through June 30, 2016, will remain at 50 percent.” This essentially means that if you try to haul your old fencing materials to the local dump, you may be required to find ways to recycle or reuse up to 65 percent of what you intend to haul away.

So how exactly can homeowners, business owners, and other individuals in the San Diego area get rid of old and dilapidated fencing materials efficiently and cost-effectively? Enter Junk King San Diego

Can You Recycle Your Old Fence?

While the more traditional approach of simply “dumping” old fencing material may be difficult and a bit more challenging than you may have anticipated, it’s not all bad news. In fact, there is a far better alternative for disposing of old fence components and hardware: recycling.

For most people, the term “recycling” immediately brings to mind cardboard waste and old soda cans. Although there is certainly a huge recycling market for these materials, recycling of waste products encompasses far more than cans, bottles, and plastic.

A significant number of residential fences in San Diego are constructed of wood. This may be redwood, cedar, or even pine. Depending on the condition of the wood fence materials, some of these boards, or pickets, can even be reused either by the homeowners for new projects, or by organizations such as the Habitat ReStore. Sometimes, depending on their condition, even the metal hardware can be reused, as well.

And for all that old wood fence material that is in such bad shape that it can’t be reasonably used again, there is recycling.

In fact, according to one source,

“Scrap lumber from home improvement projects and other untreated wood has a number of uses for recycling. It can be chipped and used in compost or mulch. It can also be turned into particleboard or chipboard lumber.

Where you can recycle wood varies from community to community. New York City residents can bundle lumber with tree limbs for curbside pickup. In Berkeley, CA, and Chattanooga, TN, wood can be dropped off at municipal recycling centers. Many private companies that create home and garden products will also take untreated lumber.”

The one type of wood product that cannot be recycled nor disposed of in landfills in California is pressure-treated wood.

This wood is officially known as ‘treated wood waste’ or TWW. It is considered hazardous waste by the state of California and is only permitted in Class III non-hazardous waste facilities in compliance with requirements in Section 25230 of the Health and Safety Code.

In San Diego County, these landfills are the Otay and Sycamore facilities.

Recycling Old Fencing Can Mean More than Just Wood

But what if your fence was more of a wall? And the debris that you have now that it’s been taken down is mostly brick or masonry rubble?

No worries! It turns out that concrete, brick, rock, and masonry is all recyclable, too

In the industry, masonry is a general term for material made as blocks, usually stone, brick, or concrete. However, it can include gravel, concrete rubble, and even sand. The concrete is often crushed and processed to create recycled concrete aggregate, or RCA. And most landscaping blocks are actually made of concrete, so they lend themselves well to recycling.

Got bricks? According to one article

“Bricks can be recycled in two ways. First, they can be cleaned and reused in another building or project. Alternatively, they can be crushed into brick chips (for use as a landscape material) and/or finer particles (for use in manufacturing road-base, track and drainage material, fill sand or new bricks).”

So, the great thing about all your old fencing waste and debris is that it is almost all recyclable – even the metal hardware and fasteners. And if you aren’t keen on figuring out how to make all that happen yourself, the team from Junk King will take care of that part of the process for you when they clear out all your fencing debris for you.

How to Dismantle Your Fence in 4 Simple Steps

Depending on the size, construction, and material of your residential fence, dismantling or “deconstruction” can be a fairly simple task. In fact, it is quite likely that it’s a project you can do on your own or with very little help.

Since most residential fences tend to be built from wood and are, more often than not, some variety of picket and post construction, we’ll focus on that.

Here is a basic overview of the four essential steps for tearing down your old fence:

  • Plan and Prepare: Before you start removing anything, you should make the following calls.
  • Utility companies: Find out if any utility lines run under or near the fence before you start digging. This can be done by dialing 811 and have locators come and provide markings where gas pipelines or electric lines are located and indicate pipe material and diameter.
  • Local government: You may need to get a permit if your fence is going to be more than six feet high or is for the front or side of your property.
  • Your neighbors: Let your neighbors know about your project. They may need to make changes to their yard space use, especially if they have outdoor pets or need to move things for you.

Also, you will want to plan for where you will stage your fencing debris and waste ahead of time so that it is easy to get to, to work around, and does not present a safety hazard.

Remove the Gates

Start your dismantling with the gates.

  • Unscrew the hinges from the gate posts
  • Lift the gate away from the fence and put it aside
  • Remove any remaining hardware from the fence posts

Detach Fence Panels or Boards

If your fence was built with pre-fab panels, it may be easier to remove them as one piece. If you do not plan to reuse the entire panels, then you can simply cut them off at the posts.

  • Cut the rails with a reciprocating saw or hand saw as close to the fence posts as possible
  • Saw or break the fence panels into smaller sections if needed
  • Stage each panel in your debris area

If your fence is made of individual boards or pickets,

  • Unfasten the boards from the rails by using a power screwdriver if they are attached with screws or, if they’re nailed on, you may need to pry the boards loose with a pry bar before using your hammer to remove them
  • Stack the boards in your debris staging area

Pull Up and Remove Fence Posts

If your fence posts were simply buried and not set in concrete, simply doing a bit of digging and rocking the posts until they come loose will often do the trick.

If, however, the posts are in concrete footings, you may have to winch or lever them out, if possible. Depending on the amount of space around the posts, you can also simply dig down and around the footing until you can tilt the post and concrete enough to pull it up.

Top 5 Tips for an Efficient and Easy Estate Cleanout in San Diego

Estate Clean Out

Going through an estate cleanout is usually not caused by cheerful events. In some cases, an estate cleanout may be caused by the unexpected loss of a family member. In other cases, forced evictions, downsizing due to a severe financial crisis, or other economic hardships may also be cause for an estate cleanout. For example, recent estimates find that 1 in 12,448 properties in the United States is currently in foreclosure, with an estimated 214,323 active foreclosure cases nationwide during 2020. During many of these foreclosure cases, the prior owners simply don’t have enough space to move the items inside their previous homes.

By definition, an estate cleanout refers to the thorough and all-inclusive removal of all of a home´s items. These items include appliances both large and small, sofas, beds, kitchenware, perishable food items, and all other personal items that are located on a particular property. The purpose of an estate cleanout is to help the property gain the appearance of an empty property that can be immediately listed for sale.

For the person in charge of doing an estate cleanout, it can be an emotionally charged time, especially if they are tasked with getting rid of items that may have sentimental or nostalgic value. At the same time, there is often a limited timeline associated with estate cleanouts, as banks, realtors, or other financial institutions may place a deadline on when the property needs to be listed for sale. Whether you are an individual helping your older family member downsize into a smaller, assisted care living facility, or you work for a larger real estate firm that is doing an anonymous estate cleanout of a property that needs to be listed for sale in the shortest amount of time possible, below we offer five suggestions for how to do an efficient and easy estate cleanout in the San Diego region.

Tip #1: Before You Cleanout Your San Diego Estate, Hire an Appraiser

Before you get into the hard work of doing an estate cleanout, it is important to consider hiring an accredited estate appraiser. Obviously, you can omit this step if the majority of the “stuff” in the estate is junk or other items of low value that you simply want to donate or otherwise get rid of in the timeliest manner. However, if the property does have items of value, it is typically a good idea to have a professional offer you an estimate of each item. Most estate appraisers charge an hourly fee, and they can give you a fairly exact idea of the value of the items in the estate. Things such as jewelry, artwork, pristine furniture, high-quality electronics and appliances, and other items might be worth much more than what you first imagined.

Tip #2: Take The Necessary Time To Go Through Memorabilia

If the estate cleanout you are doing is taking you down memory lane, it is important to take the necessary time to go through all of the family memorabilia, keepsakes, and other items that have nostalgic and sentimental value. Without taking the necessary time to thoroughly go through the estate, you may accidentally throw away old family photo albums hidden in a cabinet or other piece of furniture. The process of unhurriedly going through these important items can also help to bring family members together, often in times of hardship and loss.

If you are doing the estate cleanout on your own, you may consider  Junk King of San Diego’s full-service junk removal. After you slowly and deliberately go through the items that you need to get rid of, ensuring that no important items accidentally get thrown out. Give Junk King a call for fast and efficient pickup of all your unwanted items in the estate.

Tip #3: High-Value Items in Your Estate, Consider Selling Them

Junk Removal

Most people probably don’t have a lot of space in their homes to take in a whole house full of furniture from an estate cleanout. Instead of simply sending those items to the dump, however, you might be able to earn some quality cash by selling those items locally. Consider setting up a garage sale to attract interest from local neighbors. You can also list furniture, appliances, and other items on Craigslist or other online marketplaces. To not draw out the estate cleanout process, consider setting a deadline for when those items should be sold. If they´ve not sold after a certain allotted period, it might be time to consider calling a junk removal service like Junk King San Diego to haul it away.

Tip #4: Donate Whatever Items Have Little Resale Value

In any estate foreclosure, there are also bound to be several items that simply do not have much resale value. Things such as used clothing, books, and other smaller items are generally not worth your time to try to sell. Whatever items cannot be sold or given to family members, you may consider donating to thrift stores or other organizations that work with underprivileged families in your community.

Tip #5: Hire the Best Junk Removal Service In San Diego To Do Your Estate Cleanout For You

junk removal services in san diego ca

Lastly, it is important to not try to take on too much responsibility by yourself. Though it may be an emotionally rewarding process to go through the memorabilia and sentimental items, trying to categorize, price, sell, donate, and get rid of hundreds of individual items in an estate cleanout can quickly lead to burnout. Instead of trying to do it all on your own, hiring a professional junk removal service is often the best way to efficiently speed up the estate cleanout process.

Junk King of San Diego is the top-rated junk removal service for southern California. We offer both residential and commercial junk pickup services to individuals and businesses in the San Diego area, including Alpine, Bonita, Chula Vista, Dulzura, El Cajon, Jamul, La Mesa, Lakeside, Lemon Grove, Ramona, Santee, and Spring Valley.

For estate cleanouts, we are one of the few companies in the region that can offer you a fair and transparent pricing estimate for any junk removal job. We understand that estate cleanouts can be a hectic time, and we believe that our customers shouldn’t have to worry about hidden prices and other concealed costs. Thus, we offer all of our customers four convenient ways to get a free estimate on any size junk removal service you may need.

For larger jobs, we offer on-site pricing, which will allow us to give you an accurate and exact price estimate for the job. We may even be able to haul away your junk the same day we give you the on-site price estimate. You can also call us at 1-888-888-JUNK to live chat with our highly trained customer service representatives. For smaller junk removal services, you can take a photo of the items you need removed and text us at 737-888-5865. We will text you back an estimate. When You Need Furniture Removal: San Diego Residents On The Move

Furniture Removal

Sometimes you’re moving out. But sometimes you’re simply moving “up” to better home furnishings.

Regardless of why, when it comes to getting rid of old furniture, the task of furniture removal can be challenging. When you’re relatively young, strong, healthy, and have a few friends willing to give you a hand, it might be manageable.

But when you’re further along in life, or not so strong, or perhaps not in the best physical condition for hauling 200 pound credenzas, it can be a different story.

Oh, and removing and disposing of old or unwanted furniture requires a vehicle that is suitable for hauling large items. To be fair, it is quite likely that if you live in San Diego, you may well own a pickup truck. Communities in and around San Diego are known for their love of trucks and there seems to be no shortage of them around.

But if you’re not one of those people, you won’t be removing any good-sized pieces of furniture in your Lexus or Toyota Camry!

And, even if you do own a truck, trying to move, lift, and load anything heavier than, say, 50 pounds is going to be rough.

Which is why Junk King San Diego specializes in furniture removal.

When the Time Comes to Get Rid of Old Furniture

There can be several reasons why you might need to make use of furniture removal services.

For most of us, it happens when we purchase new pieces of furniture or entire new furniture sets. And since, unlike appliances or mattresses, almost no retailer or vendor will offer to remove your old pieces for you, that avenue for old furniture removal won’t be an option.

In fact, you’ll likely be paying for the delivery of the new items.

For others, it’s not necessarily a move up in furniture quality, but a move out to a new home or business location. And these types of moves often result in the need to dispose of some of your older furniture pieces or items you simply no longer want or take with you.

Less often, but increasingly more common, is downsizing

These folks find that they either want or need to reduce their living space and, consequently, the number of furnishings they own. This can be the result of a lifestyle choice of those who want to minimize the number of belongings they possess and simplify their lives

For others, unfortunately, it comes about as the result of a job loss or a divorce settlement. In those instances, economics and necessity can lead to divesting themselves of furniture they no longer need or have room for.

But, whatever the reason or circumstance, getting rid of furniture means furniture removal and disposal.

On the Bright Side: Getting Furniture Removal ‘San Diego Style’ with Junk King

furniture removal

Moving furniture is never a picnic.

Even smaller pieces like end tables or nightstands can weigh up to 100 pounds. And that 3-seat sofa in your den might be as much as 1,000 pounds! Oh, and the big entertainment center that you just “had to have” can weigh in at up to 450 pounds.

Typically, higher-end, solid wood furniture items will tend to be much heavier than, say, those Euro/Modern pieces that are often made with plastics, aluminum, or composite materials. But even a lightweight piece that is bigger than you are can be difficult if not impossible to move on your own.

So, getting some help with furniture removal is often a given. But there are other challenges.

Tools can be helpful – and sometimes required – for proper furniture removal. And even if you don’t have to partially dismantle a piece, having a furniture dolly with locking straps, for example, can be a lifesaver.

Then there is the challenge of getting those large, heavy, and bulky pieces down stairs and hallways, as well as through doorways safely. Which means without smashing fingers, hands, elbows, corners, door jambs, and ceilings!

Oh, and did we mention that you’ll also need a truck to transport your old furniture to whatever destination you’ve determined you need to take it to. (Assuming you know where to take it!)

All of which is why the far better solution for your old furniture removal project is to bring in a professional team that specializes in furniture removal. San Diego has such a team and they’re at Junk King San Diego. And they are standing by, ready to take care of your furniture removal at your convenience.

Another great reason why Junk is your best choice for furniture removal is that, among other things, we carry out our customer service in what some might call “the old-fashioned way” in that we treat every customer as if they were they only one we have.

In addition, we also serve our customers by always providing fair and up-front pricing. When we come to an appointment, we always call our customers before we arrive to let them know that we are nearby and are showing up on time, as promised.

Heck! We even sweep up after ourselves!

Pricing & Services: How Does Junk King Work and What Does It Cost?

At Junk King San Diego we believe in fair and transparent pricing policies. And we work hard to ensure that our pricing is the best in our market. But we also take a much more equitable approach to pricing each job that saves you money.

We understand that when it comes to furniture removal quotes and rates, things can get confusing. And you definitely want to get the best prices, right?

So, are Junk King prices really that good?

Actually, yes. In fact, another way we provide great service to our customers is to maintain fair and upfront pricing that is the best in our service area. IT can be con

One of the ways we do this is by never charging customers simply by how much their junk weighs. If you have a few pieces of large, solid wood furniture, for example, that you want us to take for you, it can be quite a heavy load.

But you shouldn’t have to pay more for that load than your neighbor who gets rid of a truck-full of broken-down cardboard boxes that weighs half as much, for example.

Unlike most other junk removal services, Junk King only charges by volume, not by weight. In other words, we only charge you for how much space your old furniture or other junk takes up in our junk removal truck.

That means you don’t pay more for removing one heavy piece than someone else is paying for half a dozen lightweight pieces. This makes the process simple and saves you money!

Here’s an example: Let’s say you live in Spring Valley, west of San Diego, and you have some small furniture pieces you want us to pick up. If your load would fill a full-size pickup truck bed, then we know that that’s just under 20 percent of a full Junk King truck load.

And your estimate would be $228 to $258 for that load. (As of March 2022)

And keep in mind that we never charge you for additional items or surprise you with hidden fees.

In fact, we guarantee to outdo any other written estimate. That’s because we are so confident our prices are better than any comparable operator in our area. Which means any licensed, insured, junk removal company in the area that operates a recycling-based operation to keep our landfills free of unnecessary waste materials.

Which is how we operate!

So, for fast, safe, and convenient furniture removal, San Diego residents can save green and be green with Junk King San Diego.

Junk King San Diego’s Process: What Happens When You Call Them?

When you call to schedule a pickup from the premier San Diego furniture haulers – Junk King San Diego – you might want to know a bit more about the Junk King removal process. And that is certainly understandable as furniture removal and junk removal are not tasks that everyone is experienced with.

Of course, you can always book an appointment with us online, as well.

Once you choose a date for us to come out, we’ll let you know what the available two-hour arrival slots for that day. We never give you six or eight hour windows that leave you waiting all day for junk removal!

And once you choose the time, we book the appointment, and you’re good to go!

Remember that our two-person furniture removal team will call you about 15 to 30 minutes before they arrive to confirm your appointment with us and to let you know they are close by. And when they arrive, they’ll provide you with a free estimate if you don’t already have one.

What happens next is that you simply point and stand back while we do all the heavy lifting!
