Illegal dumping will get you into trouble even if you’re on TV. Recently a local Stockton man and his employer were sentenced for their part in dumping hazardous waste along on Highway 70 back in February. This incident went down during the production of a reality television series called “Hell on the Highway: Highway Heroes.” What happened was the defendant Elizabeth Cannon-Lynch was operating a towing company called Running Bear Towing. She got a call to tow a truck in Portola that the driver had mixed diesel and unleaded fuel.
The problem was Running Bear Tower didn’t have the proper permits or equipment to transport and dispose of hazardous waste but they went ahead with the job anyway. William Slade was the driver of the truck and with a reality crew filming his actions rented an electric pump to empty their client’s truck of hazardous fuel waste. This wasn’t a major spill by any stretch but it still landed Slade 45 days in Plumas County Jail as well as $1,734 in fines, $4,612 in restitution and three years of formal probation. Cannon-Lynch was sentenced to serve 100 hours of community service and pay $1,916 in fines.
