A Quick Checklist For Hot Tub Disposal

A Quick Checklist For Hot Tub Disposal

Your old hot tub has finally hosted its last soaking and you're ready for a new one. That's great, but how will you take care of your old hot tub disposal?

Yep! You still have to get rid of your old unit before you can have a new hot tub installed. And you don't want it laying in a heap in the corner of your backyard. So, what do you do?

Before You Can Enjoy the Relaxing Warmth of Your New Hot Tub

Okay, so, maybe you can simply haul your old unit off to the side of the house for a while until you finally get around to getting rid of it.

And, maybe you already did that.

The truth is, there are probably thousands of old hot tubs that either no longer work or aren't being used any more that are simply taking up space in people's backyards or on their decks. And the longer they sit there the more difficult the removal task will be.

Not to mention that they present a hazard.

Apparently, for many homeowners, after having experienced owning and using a hot tub on a regular basis, they don't want to go without one. At least, according to most sales statistics for hot tubs and spa tubs.

It seems that most new sales of hot tubs, spas and Jacuzzis are to replace old appliances. Sometimes they represent an upgrade, but mostly they're to replace old tubs that have given up the ghost, so to speak.

It's not news to most of us, but people love having hot tubs.

By the way, although most folks tend to use the terms somewhat interchangeably, hot tubs, spas, and Jacuzzis are not the same thing.

For example, according to the folks at The Spruce,

"Each one refers to a heated pool of water, usually with space for multiple people, that may or may not contain accessories like jets and bubblers. Their differences boil down to brand name, location, and specific use. Read on to learn more about each one and how they differ from one another."

They go on to note that people incorrectly refer to any type of hot tub or spa as a Jacuzzi. But Jacuzzi is actually a trademarked brand name for jetted tubs and other spa equipment.

A hot tub, on the other hand, is a large tub of heated water used for relaxation, hydrotherapy, or just for fun. The term hot tub is a generic one referring to any tub, whether it has jets, bubblers, or no extra features at all.

Then there's the spa.

The term spa actually describes water treatment, which can take many forms. Spa resorts are locations where mineral-rich spring water, like that from natural hot springs, is used for healing baths and other health treatments.

However, hot tubs, jetted tubs, and Jacuzzis can also be referred to as spas, which may just add to the confusion anyway!

But regardless of what you choose to call it, that beloved old tub has to go. And you probably don't want to do it yourself.

Can Old Hot Tub Disposal be a DIY Task?

Sure. You can certainly try to dismantle and remove an old hot tub by yourself if your really want to.

The real question is, "Why would you want to?"

A quick search on Google for "how to remove an old hot tub" brings up millions of results. you can easily find thousands of videos with step-by-step instructions on how to dismantle and dispose of old units. Though it is apparent that it's not really a one-person job, by the way.

At this point it's important to understand that this truly isn't a task for everyone. It involves the use of special tools and safety equipment, hazardous dust and particles, and dangerous debris that can easily cause injuries.

That said, dismantling your hot tub can be done but must be done with caution.

So, let's look at what's involved in DIY hot tub removal. To help with that, we created this handy checklist to walk you through the major steps for hot tub removal and disposal:

Considering Your Hot Tub Disposal Costs

If you don't already own them, there are a few tools you'll need to acquire, as well as a suitable vehicle to haul the dismembered remains to a proper disposal facility.

The DIY Removal Costs

Most homeowners may not own the proper cutting tools needed to safely break down and disassemble a hot tub. For example, you'll probably need a good reciprocating saw for both the outer skirt material and the tub itself.

  • Cost: Between $30 and $150 depending on the brand and quality. (Hint: avoid the cheap ones!)
  • There are a few other tools you may have to purchase if you don't have them. Also, if you plan to haul the debris yourself, some heavy-duty tarps will come in handy.
  • Cost: Anywhere from $15 to $50 or more based on size and thickness.
  • In addition, there will be safety goggles, work gloves, dust masks and possibly even ear protection that you may need to purchase.

Then, once you've successfully dismantled your hot tub and have all the scraps and debris loaded into a truck or on a trailer - assuming you have access to one - you will need to dispose of it all in a proper manner.

And if you have to rent a truck, you'll need to add in the hourly or daily rental rate, plus mileage, plus fuel.

All of which adds up to more costs. Not to mention that you're still doing all of the work.

Once you arrive at the waste transfer station or, better yet, a certified recycling facility, you'll be paying fees there, as well. And that's if they will accept your old hot tub in the first place. This can be problematic in many locations.

On the other hand, you can have a professional disposal firm come and take care of it all for you.
