E Waste Recycling In Chattanooga

Let’s talk e-waste factoids. The Environmental Protection Agency put out a report in 2007 (the last time they did this) entitled “Management of Select Electronic Products in the United States.”  According to the findings, there were 2.25 million tons of “televisions, cell phones and computer products” that were tossed on the scrap heap that year. Of that amount only 18% were actually recycled leaving a whopping 82% dumped into landfills. A vast majority of those e-waste items could end up leaking cadmium, lead and nickel into the top soil and water supply if they are left to rot in a landfill. That’s not a good thing.

The report also found that even though only 2% of municipal waste can be considered e-waste it is also a category that is growing twice as fast as any type of garbage. You can see why when you match that stat up with the one from the Consumer Electronics Association. According to those number crunchers there are at least 24 electronic products in every household. How many plug in products are operating in your home?

Here in Tennessee there are around 175 collection sites available for residents to drop off their e-waste. The trick is finding those places that are close to you and actually getting your stuff to the drop off center. That’s a lot to fuss with especially if you have a busy schedule. Is there a better way? As it turns out there is and that would be hiring Junk King Chattanooga.

Chattanooga Refrigerator Disposal

For many years Habitat for Humanity has been on the scene in Chattanooga building homes for the disadvantaged and providing them with a fresh start in life. As a not-for-profit organization Habitat for Humanity depends upon the kindness of strangers to fund its operations. Another source of income for the group is their ReStore. This is a special operation just opened its doors in Chattanooga and is meant as a retail store providing materials for homebuilding and design. The difference is that all the items at the ReStore our donated by homeowners, contractors and building supply warehouses. Not only does this provide an abundance of materials at affordable prices it also keeps those materials from being relegated to trash heap. And we all know the more we can keep out of a landfill the better off it will be for everyone.
If you are going through a remodeling job in your home you might want to consider donating your leftover materials to this Habitat for Humanity store. However, there are some items they just can’t accept such as old kitchen appliances. In order to get rid of these items you’ll need to call in a professional hauling crew like Junk King Chattanooga to haul the materials off to the proper disposal facility. One of the first things that goes into the kitchen remodel is a new refrigerator. While it is true that many families can make use of a spare refrigerator it becomes a matter of whether or not there is space for it in a garage or basement. Of course, if that refrigerator has seen better days then it might be time to just get it taken away.
The last thing you want to do is keep their refrigerator hanging around without taking precautions. There are laws on the books which state that an unused refrigerator either has to be securely padlocked or have its door taken off. This is true of any owner of an abandoned refrigerator whether or not their kids living in the household. In order to avoid liability altogether you should just get rid of that with ice box before it can cause any trouble.
As long as you’re hiring a professional company of movers to take away that old refrigerator there is no reason why they can’t remove some other items that are an eyesore in and around your home. How many junk car parts are there in your backyard or garage? How many busted pieces of furniture are floating around your house? What about any kind of old farm equipment? Even yard waste like fallen tree limbs or dead shrubbery can be tossed onto the same truck with that old refrigerator. The bottom line is that this could be a perfect opportunity to clear out a lot of junk from your living space. This should be the stuff that is destined for the trash heap and can be recycled or donated anywhere else. This junk has served its purpose and now it is time to send it on its way.

Sleep Longer and Live Longer by Getting Rid of Your Old Mattress!

We’ve all been told for most of our lives how important it is for a good night’s rest. In fact, there have been many studies conducted in the area of sleep research to understand just what happens when we drift off and why it is so important. The following is list of the top benefits we get from a decent sleep:
-  Improve Your Memory: If you think of your brain as a constantly working computer then you can appreciate the need for that computer to shut down for rest. Even your actually computer has a “sleep mode.” While we sleep, our brain is able to defrag all the items we took in during the day. By sorting these memories, the brain is able to store them in the right places which allow you to recall them when needed.
- Live Longer: This is where the issue of proper balance comes into play. Too much sleep or not enough sleep can have a direct impact on our lifespan. A recent found that women who ranged in age between 50 to 79 had more death occur when they slept less than five hours a night. The recommended daily dose of sleep is a good 7 to 8 hours.
- Reduce Your Inflammation: Heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis and premature aging: What do these conditions all have in common? Inflammation. Studies have found that people who sleep six hours or less a night have higher blood levels of proteins which cause inflammation. Connect the dots: less sleep equals more inflammation equals more health risk.
- Get Inspired: If you’re planning a bout of creativity you might want to get some sleep the night before. Just as your brain is sorting through those memories during sleep it is also restructuring them. This is the very root of creativity whether you are writing, painting or even giving a presentation where you need to “adjust to the room.” With sleep, your brain will be fresh and open to letting those creative juices flow.
- Help Your Focus: The simple fact that a lack of proper sleep leads to lousy grades and lack of focus has been proven many time through sleep studies. In fact, a lack of sleep can trigger symptoms that are normally associated with a person who is suffering from attention deficit disorder.
If all of this makes you concerned about the quality of your sleep it should! A lot of the problems people have with sleep can actually be attributed to what they are sleeping on. In other words, how old is your mattress? If you’ve been sleeping on the same cushioning for the past five years it’s probably time for an upgrade.
It might seem like a hassle to get rid of an old mattress but actually all it takes is one phone call to a Chattanooga mattress disposal company like Junk King. Professional junk haulers like Junk King can show up at the scheduled hour and get rid of your old lumpy mattress and make room for your new sleep oasis. Don’t waste another night!

Tennessee Resident Energy Star Rebates – Chattanooga Appliance Disposal

A while back, the government tried to give a much needed boost to the auto industry with the “cash for clunkers” program. The idea was if you turned in a car made with low gas mileage and replaced it with a more fuel efficient model you would get an extra rebate incentive. Guess what? It worked! Cars started flying off the showroom floors. Congress had to jump back in and juice up the program with even more cash. It was just what the auto industry needed to bounce back and now they are reporting big earnings. Well, if it worked for cars why not for air conditioners or gas furnaces or heat pumps?
Here’s the official response to that question: “The State of Tennessee’s Department of Economic and Community Development, in concert with the U.S. Department of Energy, is making rebates available to Tennessee residents who replace an existing room air conditioner, central air conditioner, air source heat pump, or gas furnace with a new ENERGY STAR qualified model.”
So, how does this work? First of all, any Tennessee resident who is homeowners or renters is eligible for the rebate offer. What you need to do is buy an ENERGY STAR qualified room air conditioners, central air conditioners, air source heat pumps, and gas furnaces that replaces your existing appliances from any Tennessee retailers or licensed heating contractors. You also need to have that new appliance installed within the State of Tennessee. Keep in mind that this is a limited frame of when you can buy these appliances and how much money is in the fund. Appliances must be purchased from April 22, 2010 through February 17, 2012. The rebates will be paid on a first come, first serve basis. The total amount of available funds is $5,660,000. When that runs out, the deal is done.
You should also know that there is a limit of one rebate per household. And you’re getting your rebates with a Prepaid MasterCard Card which can only be mailed to a Tennessee address or post office box. But wait, there’s more! Consumers might be able to combine federal, state, and utility rebates to boost their savings even more. Bottom line: don’t just run off to buy a new AC and call it a day. Check with the utility company first and see what they’re offering. This also holds true with a bunch of kitchen appliances as well. Things like refrigerators, washing machines and dryers could be eligible for some kind of rebate.
In your rush to get a rebate, you’ve also got the think about getting rid of that old appliance. That’s when you should call in a team of professional haulers like Junk King Chattanooga who can show up and get rid of that old appliance. These experienced haulers can load up any size appliance onto their truck and make sure it is disposed of properly. Play it right and you can have the old appliance taken out on the same day as the new one comes in. Just how are you going to spend your rebate?
