While we all hope our appliances will last for years, the unfortunate truth is that eventually, we will have to replace refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, and other items. When it’s time to replace one of your appliances, you have to deal with disposing of the old one. Appliance disposal can be very easy if you know who to call. If you don’t, you may end up storing the old appliance in your garage for years. Let’s look at different appliances and how you can most easily dispose of them.

Refrigerators

Refrigerators are one of the hardest appliances to dispose of because they’re so large and bulky. Searching for “refrigerator disposal near me” will return some results, of course, but you may be shocked at how much it can cost to get rid of a single refrigerator. That’s because in addition to simply dealing with refrigerator removal, you also have to remove the hazardous refrigerant from them before they can be disposed of. Many landfills will not take refrigerators that contain antifreeze and other chemicals.

If you take your old refrigerator out to your garage or out to the curb, you need to take safety precautions. You will need to remove the door so no one can get trapped within it. You should also remove or roll up and secure the power cable. If you can’t remove the doors, securely tape them shut.

Freezers

Much like refrigerator removal, disposing of freezers is difficult because of the chemicals they contain. The refrigerant must be drained out of the freezers before they can be dumped in a landfill. Also, like refrigerators, you must make certain these old appliances are safe until they’re disposed of. This means removing the door or securely taping it shut. Large chest freezers can be even more difficult to take out of your home, so you have to be very careful you don’t hurt yourself. Never try to move one of these appliances by yourself.

Large freezers typically have ice build up in them, so wherever you put the freezer, remember that the ice will melt now that it has no power. Most of these freezers do have a drain port, so once the ice has melted, you can open that little port and let the water drain out. You may not want to do that in your garage, so you may want to move the freezer a second time to drain it, then put it back in the garage until you can have it removed.

Washers and Dryers

Washing machines and dryers are also fairly large and heavy appliances you may need to replace at some point. If you purchase new ones and have them delivered, you may be able to pay to have the old ones removed. However, if you don’t have that option, you’ll need to do something with the old appliances.

Washers and dryers don’t have any chemicals in them, so you don’t have to worry about refrigerants. However, you do want to make certain that your washing machine water lines have been completely drained. You’ll need to turn off the water to the washer and remove the hoses from the back of the appliance.

For the dryer, you’ll want to remove the vent hose. This is typically a large, flexible hose that attaches to both the wall and the dryer with a circular clamp. Remove it from both, and then use something like an old rag to plug the vent hole in your wall. This exhaust vents to the outside, and if you don’t plug it up, it could create a draft. It’s also possible, though unlikely that rodents or even birds could get into it from the outside and move through it into your house. Tape the doors shut before you take these appliances to the garage or other location to store them until you can hire an appliance disposal service.

Kitchen Stoves and Ovens

Kitchen stoves and ovens may not need to be replaced as often as washing machines, dryers, or refrigerators, but they can still wear out. Your stove and oven may be one single unit, which is easier to deal with. If your stove is electric, simply unplug it and pull it away from the wall, then move it to wherever you want. If it’s gas, you’ll want to be certain you understand how to turn off the gas before you move the unit.

Built-in cooktops and ovens can be more difficult to remove. When your oven isn’t a part of your stove, you may need to unscrew it from the cabinet or other enclosure, figure out where the power or gas line is located, and take other steps. In this case, it may be easier to hire someone to remove the oven and install the new one. It depends on how confident you are in doing such a task. Either way, the old oven isn’t as difficult to store as a full stove/oven appliance since it’s smaller.

Air Conditioners and Furnaces

Replacing and disposing of window AC units is fairly easy, while dealing with full HVAC air conditioners and furnaces isn’t. However, when your home has a 30-year-old air conditioner, it may be time to replace it. Newer models are more energy-efficient and keep your home more comfortable without using as much power.

Normally, you don’t have to worry too much about appliance disposal when it comes to HVAC units and equipment because those repairs, replacements, and updates have to be done by licensed professionals. They normally dispose of any old parts they have to remove, so you won’t need to search online for “air conditioner disposal near me.” If you do have to get rid of old HVAC parts, though, Junk King of Cincinnati can take them.

If you have an old window unit that no longer works, you’ll need to have it removed. Fortunately, storing these small appliances is much easier than finding somewhere to keep a large chest freezer or washing machine. Just make sure you place it somewhere out of the way. Small window units, unlike large appliances, could actually present a tripping hazard if you put them in the wrong place.

New call-to-action

Microwaves and other Small Appliance Disposal

Small appliance disposal is much easier than dealing with large items. These appliances such as microwaves, toaster ovens, and other items can be easily stored and may even be acceptable for bulky trash pickup. However, if you’re getting rid of larger appliances or other large amounts of junk, you can simply throw your small appliances in with them.

The most important thing with small appliances is to make sure they’re safe to dispose of. You’ll want to remove any plates, trays, and other items from inside them. As with other appliances, be sure to tape the doors shut and wrap up any cords. These small appliances, like window unit air conditioners, can be tripping hazards, so be sure to store them somewhere out of the way until they can be disposed of.

Instead of Disposal, Consider Appliance Recycling

While disposing of old appliances gets them out of your home, it does send them to the landfill. This isn’t environmentally friendly, especially since many of these large appliances can’t be compacted. However, there is another option: appliance recycling. Most appliances can be at least partially recycled. Even if all parts cannot be, much of the metal, glass, and plastic can.

Junk King handles appliance removal, but we also work with local recycling centers to recycle what parts of them we can. We sort out anything that is recyclable, which includes appliances. We will have the refrigerant and other chemicals drained from them, then disassemble them into their recyclable components. All of this is done at no additional cost to you. We’re dedicated to reducing the amount of junk that goes into a landfill, and our recycling initiative is the primary way we do that.

Spring! Time for a Yard Waste Dumpster Rental in Cincinnati

When we think of spring cleaning, we tend to think mostly of indoor projects. Cleaning out the garage. Decluttering the basement. Going through our closets and pulling out garments we don’t wear anymore. Cleaning up the dust, pet dander, and other debris that has built up on surfaces throughout the winter months. By all means, though, your spring cleaning routine should also include some attention to your yard. A yard waste dumpster rental can make it that much easier to execute springtime cleanup and landscaping projects for your yard.

Your Springtime Yard Cleanup Checklist

yard waste dumpster rentalEven a well-maintained yard can start looking pretty decrepit over the course of the winter. Between cold weather, snow, and melting snow, your yard might look brown, flooded, or generally in ill health. Of course, a lot of these issues will take care of themselves as the spring season moves forward. Your grass will start growing again, the trees will blossom, and the flowers will begin to bloom. In a month or two, your yard will look likely and beautiful again.

With all that said, the fact is that you can do a few things to get your yard back into shape sooner. Your springtime yard cleanup checklist might include steps like:

  • Raking up leaves: If there are trees in your yard, then there are probably still leaves strewn about from last fall. Your yard might also be littered with twigs and branches that broke off the trees under the weight of the snow. Raking up the debris and removing it will clean up your yard for a new season.

  • Prune trees, shrubs, hedges, or other plants: Even the most resilient plants can be damaged by heavy snow and bitter cold. Trimming damaged or dead branches from shrubs, trees, hedges, or other plants can make for a healthier growing season for those plants. In other cases, you might have to prune healthy plants that have become a bit overgrown in the past year. Evergreen trees, especially, tend to need some strategic pruning in the springtime.

New Call-to-action

  • Clean other litter out of the yard: Is there other litter that needs to be cleaned up before you can start work on your yard? If you have a dog, you might need to go around the yard cleaning up dog waste. There could also be pieces of garbage that have ended up in your yard some way or another. Collecting this junk should be one of your first steps in the spring.

  • Mow the lawn: Your lawn may or may not be very long at this point, depending on whether you mowed it in the fall and how much snow you had. However, giving the lawn a quick, low-cut mow early in the spring is a good idea. Mowing at this stage can help clean up some of the dead grass on the ground, making way for healthier growth in the months to come. An early spring mow can also help clean up snow mold if you have that issue.

  • Plant and landscape: What does your landscaping plan look like this year? Whether you are planning on building a new garden, planting a few trees, or simply dotting the yard with flowers, you should start the planting process early in the summer. Other landscaping tasks, such as mulching certain parts of the yard, should also happen now. Depending on the extent of your landscaping, you might need to do some extensive digging or sod removal. And don’t forget to shore up the more damaged-looking parts of your lawn with fresh seed!

Making a point of completing these tasks in April or May will ensure a green, glowing yard by June and July. You’ll have to set aside some time to do the work, but you’ll be thankful you did when the time comes for summer grilling or warm weather entertaining.

Make Your Yard Cleanup Easier with a Yard Waste Dumpster Rental

Most of the tasks discussed above result in a considerable amount of waste and debris. Piles or bags of leaves; excess dirt; clumps of discarded sod; sticks or twigs; etc. If you have a big yard, you might have a place near the back of the property where you can build a pile of firewood or start a compost pile. In many places, though—especially suburban areas where homes are close to one another—there might be no yard space to spare. Where do you put all that yard waste from your spring cleanup project?

The solution you need is a yard waste dumpster rental. From leaves and grass clippings to sticks, logs, and stumps, virtually any landscaping waste can go in a yard waste dumpster. You can fill the dumpster as you work, getting yard waste out of the way so you can move on to other parts of the project more quickly. Best of all, when you finish the job, your junk removal company will come and haul the dumpster away. You won’t have to worry about finding a place on your property to pile up yard waste because it will all be gone in just a matter of days.

Finding the Right Dumpster Rental

As you shop for a dumpster rental for yard waste disposal, remember that not all dumpster rental businesses provide this service. Dumpster rentals are often meant more for the interior cleanouts mentioned above, like garages and basements. Some dumpster rental companies don’t offer yard waste or require you to rent a specific type of bin for yard waste.

While no dumpster rental company will let you mix yard waste with standard household junk like electronic waste or old, unwanted childhood toys, some businesses are a bit more flexible than others. For instance, it’s not a bad idea to look for a dumpster rental company that lets you throw shingles, plasterboard, or other outdoor building materials into the yard waste bin. Many homeowners pair landscaping projects with improvements to the outside of their homes. In such cases, it can be nice to have one bin where you can deposit everything.

As for other areas of focus, try to find a dumpster rental company that offers eco-friendly service and fair pricing. Especially for yard waste dumpsters, it’s smart to look for rental companies that price their bins according to the amount of space you use. Many dumpster rental businesses have pricing structures that bill in “flat rates,” based on the size of the dumpster you rent. The problem is that predicting what dumpster size you need is not easy. How many cubic yards of debris are waiting in your yard to be cleaned up? It’s hard to know for sure until you are dumping clubs of dirt, piles or leaves, or pieces of wood into the bin.

Don’t let the unpredictability of your yard waste removal project cost you extra money. You don’t want to rent a yard waste dumpster that is too big, because you’ll end up paying for space you don’t use. Instead, choose a dumpster rental company that bills according to how much dumpster space you actually use. That way, you will be getting your money’s worth without sacrificing quality of service.

the do you really need it checklist

A yard cleanup is a smart step in any spring cleaning project. However, the fact is that most people don’t have the means of hauling yard waste away from their property. Taking bags of unwanted junk from your house and loading them into the trunk of your car is one thing; doing the same with bags of dirty yard waste is another. With a yard waste dumpster rental, you’ll never have to worry about the logistics of a yard cleanup again.

Take Care Of Big Appliance Recycling The Right Way

Whether you rent or own the place where you live, there’s a lot of things you can do on your own in terms of upkeep and maintenance. Not every task requires a call to the landlord or professional handyman. You can actually take a great amount of pride in making those minor repairs. However, there are some tasks that will benefit by bringing in outside help. That is certainly true when it comes to big appliance recycling. Getting rid of an old stove or refrigerator usually means you’re replacing it with a new model. Recycling that old item is in a priority. But it’s a task that can be easily handled by a company like Junk King Cincinnati. They’ll take care of big appliance recycling the right way.

old-refrigerator

Anytime you buy a new major appliance like a refrigerator or stove you always are going to be concerned with what to do with the old one. Some people can actually put a second refrigerator to use provided it can be kept down the basement or out of the garage. But if that refrigerator is beyond repair, then it needs to be taken away. You certainly don’t want it hanging around as a potential trap for kids playing hide and seek. The same can be said for any type of appliance that can be crawled into like a dishwasher, wash machine or dryer.

Junk King Cincinnati can make sure those big appliances are removed on the same day you get delivered your new appliance. This can also be the same day you get rid of the rest of your unwanted clutter from around the house. You’re going to be assigned a two-man working crew for your task. This is the team that will do all the manual labor for you. You don’t even have to unplug the refrigerator! As for the other stuff you want to get rid of it can be scattered throughout your house. You just have to point to the things you want taken away and Junk King will do the rest.

Getting rid of unwanted clutter and a big appliance has never been easier thanks to Junk King Cincinnati.

Cincinnati Air Conditioner Disposal

Do you know where your Freon is? You’re refrigerator is a good source and if you have an air condition unit chances are that will be loaded with Freon as well. For those keeping score, Freon is a cooling agent that is also classified as hazardous chemical. As long as it is kept inside the machine that it’s supposed to be in everything will be alright. It’s when it leaks is there a problem. That’s why you have to dispose of ACs and fridges in a responsible manner. Here in Butler County, locals have an opportunity to do just that… at least for a while.

The Butler County Recycling and Solid Waste District has extended its Freon collection program for another couple of weeks. This started in April and it’s simple to use. You have to call into to the department, make your way through the switchboard and set up an appointment for a curbside pickup. That means you have to get that AC or fridge down to the curb. Additionally, there have been drop-off centers set up throughout the greater Cincinnati area but once again you’ll be in charge of getting that bulky item to that drop off center. Clearly that’s going to require a truck, van or really big SUV plus some extra hands. Maybe this program isn’t so simple after all.

A much smarter alternative would be to hire Junk King Cincinnati. They are the junk removal specialists based right here in Cincinnati who work on your schedule. You won’t have to wait in line to make an appointment for a Junk King crew. You also won’t need to bring anything down to the street. The Junk King team will do all the work whether that means removing an AC from an upstairs bedroom window or getting that fridge down a flight of stairs. They also have a big enough truck to accommodate whatever amount of junk you want tossed out. Your primary reason for calling Junk King Cincinnati could be getting rid of that AC unit but that doesn’t mean you have to stop there.

This could be the perfect chance for you to finally get rid of all of those other bulky items that have been taking up valuable space in your basement, attic, closet or garage. Are you ready to trash that old sofa, sporting equipment, lawn mower or abandoned car parts? Let Junk King handle the job.

With Junk King you’ll only be charged a price based on the amount of space you’ll take up in their truck. No labor costs, no travel time and no hidden fees. Best of all, Junk King Cincinnati will make sure your bulky material is properly disposed off. That’s really the only way to go!

Junk King Cincinnati recycles almost 50% last week.

Junk King had a big recycling week this week. Our team collected a lot of junk this week(September 12th-17th) and we were able to recycle just about 1/2 of all of the junk we hauled. We hauled off a one car garage and a bunch of old siding from a shed. These truckloads needed to be dumped but the rest were able to be largely recycled. Collecting more than 12 couches we were able to donate 6 of them. St. Vincent made their regular stop and found some great options for their ministry. We were also able to recycle two 40 year old riding lawn mowers that hadn’t been used in 20 years. These items were enormously heavy but with the winch we have on our truck, we had those riding lawnmowers on our truck in about 20 minutes.
Other donations included some office furniture and a kitchen table and chairs, a several mirrors, working washers and dryers and more.
As always, Junk King removed many old mattresses and tires and disposed of them properly.
We hope everyone has a great week and recycles as much as possible to help keep our landfills available for true waste that can’t be used again. If you need help with this feel free to call Junk King at 1-800-995-JUNK(5865) or feel free to visit our website at https://Cincinnati.junk-king.com/
