If you are like most homeowners, then you save up all your home maintenance chores for the weekend. Perhaps you approach the “to do” list in order of priority. That could mean the job that you put off the longest now gets bumped to the top of the list! There are a few items to add to that list in order to get your home ready for the fall. If you plan it out, then you could take care of all these task in a single weekend. That would let you coast through the rest of the season! Here is what should be a priority on your home fall prep list:
Inspecting the Roof
It may not seem like it now but the rains are coming as they always do in California. Before they start the heavy downpour, you would be well advised to give your roof a thorough inspection. Check where the rain gutters are attached to make those joints are secure. Go around the entire perimeter of the house and make sure there haven’t been any breaches in the roof. If you spot something that doesn’t look right, then you might bring in a professional roofing contractor. If that person says you need a new roof, then it might be a good idea to get a second opinion!
Clean out the Gutters
As you’re inspecting those rain gutters to see that they are still securely attached to the roof you’ll also be clearing them out of leaves, twigs, nests and any other debris that floated in there.
Clean Your Fireplace
Not every fireplace needs a thorough chimney sweep. You might be able to find the tools you need from the hardware store to conduct a very thorough chimney sweep. This is something that should be done before you start using the fireplace this fall. Just be sure to spread old sheets are drop-offs around the living room before you start scraping out the ash from the chimney.
Replace the Vents
You will soon be making the switch from AC to heat. This is the time to swap out your air vents. If you have central heating along with central AC, then you should probably switch those vents out once a month.
