Step Up Your Green Plan With These Helpful Tips

Can you remember when you first started recycling your plastics, newspapers and water bottles? It has probably become such a routine that you don’t think twice about it. This is a good program for any household to be a part of but your recycling plan doesn’t have to stop at the recycling bin. There’s a lot more you can do around the house to reduce your carbon footprint. Here are some terrific ideas to help your house go green:

Insulate Your Attic

The reason that most roofs are dark is to absorb the sun’s heat. And since heat rises, that puts your attic as one of the hottest zones in your home. In fact, it can be 50° warmer than the rest of the house. The goal is to have your attic properly insulated. That way it will act as a tight seal to keep cool and warm air from escaping. Do you know what is the recommended level of insulation for your area? It’s a good thing to look up and to measure in order to make sure your attic is properly insulated. While you’re at it, it might be a good idea to install and attic fan to help push hot air out of your attic. That can help keep moisture from building up.

Install Low-Flow Shower Heads And Toilets

A lot of water goes right down the drain. That especially happens when you were showering. The average family can use up to 40 gallons of water per day. A low-flow showerhead allows just for two gallons per minute to flow out versus the typical 5 gallon per minute. That can be some very substantial savings. The same thing happens with your toilet. Each flush can be as much as 6 gallons of water used versus one and a half gallons with a low-flow toilet.

Plant More Greenery in Your Garden

Clearly, the best way to go green is to add green. If you have the room in your backyard, then it will be a good idea to plant a tree or more shrubbery. The trees can take a few years to fully bloom but it will be a very positive impact on the environment and even increase your home value.

Recycle Junk

Instead of holding onto all your e-waste such as old computers and televisions, you should turn that over to Junk King Cleveland. Junk King has been a green company since they began collecting junk over 12 years ago. They’ve identified all the proper recycling facilities in the Cleveland area and will happily make drop-offs of all of your recyclable materials. They’ll even repurpose things like furniture, clothing and other household goods by donating them to charities. When it comes to hauling junk, Junk King Cleveland is your green ally.

Prepping A Room For Painting

Painting a room is a terrific way to spruce things up. If you have the opportunity to paint your house before you move in with empty rooms, then all the better. However, that shouldn’t preclude you from taking on a DIY task of painting a room. It all comes down to the prep.

Removing Obstacles

First, you want to remove all the furniture. If that’s not practical, then push everything into the center the room and cover it with a plastic tarp. Next, remove any fixtures or hardware that might get in the way. That includes switch plates, door hinges and curtain rods. It takes a little time but it’s worth the effort especially when you don’t get paint splashed on those things.

Clean The Walls

It may seem counterintuitive to clean the walls that you’re about to paint. The reason is that grease, dust and grime can make it a challenge for paint to bond to your walls. That in turn can cause streaks. You should take a dry cloth a damp sponge and go over all the walls to remove that layer of dirt.

Plug Up the Holes

As you wipe down the walls, you should be on the lookout for any nail holes or gouges. These should be filled in with spackle and then send it over to make smooth. Even if you intend to rehang photos in the same spot it is better off that you make the repairs in the wall just in case you change your mind.

Put Down the Painters Tape

Now that you’ve removed obstructions, clean the walls and made repairs you’re ready to put down the painters tape. First, put down drop cloth. That can either be a literal drop cloth like old sheets. You can also use plastic and paper found in roles at any hardware store. This should all be taped down so it will come up during the painting process. You then want to use painters tape along all the baseboards, moldings and any built-ins.

What you’ll be left with is clean paint zones that will be easy to cover. You’ll find that the actual painting will take a lot less time than the prep work but it is definitely time well spent.

It might also help get rid of any unwanted clutter before you begin the process. The less you have to move around the better off you’ll be. This is a task you don’t have to take on as a DIY project. Instead, turn it over the Junk King Cleveland. There provide you with the manpower and the truck space needed to get rid of all your rubbish. The best approach for prepping your room for painting is a call to Junk King Cleveland.
