Before the sheltering in place order went out, how many emails from work would you deal with after hours? It’s not uncommon for people who do a lot of work on computers to bring some of that work home. Now, there is no choice! Remote work is going to be the “new normal” for the time being. That means whatever set up you have created for your own version of a home office you will be spending a lot of more time there! Here are some ways to help you excel at work from home:
Make Prompt Returns
Everyone that you are working with is now also working from home. This means that whatever email, phone call or text that you get will probably be expected to be answered promptly. After all, it is not like you are “in a meeting” or “out to lunch.” Of course, you can also be involved with a particular assignment and need to delay an in-depth response. But a quick text to let them know that you will call back can help keep your network operational.
Keep in Touch
A big component of the workday is socializing with your coworkers. Not every conversation has to do with a particular task. You should be proactive when it comes to keeping in touch with your coworkers even if it’s just to touch bases to see how they are holding up. They will probably be doing the same with you. You could even set up a virtual happy hour at the end of the week with the squad!
Prepare for Videoconferencing
You are going to be using videoconferencing a lot more while you work from home. That means you need to prepare for those virtual chats. Obviously, you need to make sure your tech is ready but you also want to have a professional looking background. You don’t want anything behind you to be distracting. And when on a videoconference be sure to dress appropriately. It is easy to roll out of bed and “go to work” down the hall but you don’t want to have video meeting in your pajamas!
Stay Ahead of Housework
It is important that you stay ahead of your housework, too. You might not be having company over but you will feel better if you’re not surrounded by clutter. To that end, you might want to take the time to go through every room and pull out those items that can be tossed out. That includes all your closets.
