At Junk King Reno, giving back to the community is just part of who we are, and sometimes, it starts in unexpected ways.
Every now and then, we host warehouse sales to move some of the items we pick up during cleanouts. At one of those sales in 2017, we met Bob and his wife, Michelle. As we got to talking, they shared that they run The Bobby Mello Opportunity House, which is dedicated to housing homeless veterans and senior citizens, often providing fully supported living to help them transition back to independence here in the Reno area.
That conversation stuck with us. With close family ties to veterans, it felt like a natural fit to find a way to help. When we asked what they needed most, the answer was simple: help furnishing the homes they’re able to secure for veterans.
Since then, we’ve worked together to make that happen. Bob and Michelle have stopped by our warehouse to look through items we’ve set aside, everything from furniture to everyday essentials. It’s easy to overlook how much goes into setting up a home, but things like dishes, blankets, beds, clothing, and even cleaning supplies can make a huge difference.
When we’re out on jobs, our team keeps an eye out for items that could be useful and sets them aside. If something’s too big to transport, we’ll deliver it ourselves. Our crew has even helped move and set up spaces so veterans can get settled in more quickly.
It’s a simple system, but it works, and it’s been a meaningful way for us to support people who’ve given so much.
If you’re cleaning out your home or planning a move, it’s worth remembering that things you no longer need could still have real value to someone else. There are great local organizations doing important work, and even small contributions can go a long way.
