Escondido Junk Recycling & Removal This blog was recently updated in April 2021. It was originally published on February 19, 2013. Just outside of Escondido in Oceanside a battle had once raged over what was known as the Gregory Canyon Landfill project. This particular battle went on for close to twenty-five years. Keep in mind that this landfill was approved by voters in 1994 and since then over $67 million had been invested in getting it ready for use while the permits were still under review. But it was not to be. In 2014, after reportedly spending more than $100 million on the proposed Gregory Canyon Landfill, GCL’s original investors declared bankruptcy. According to a November 2016 article in the San Diego Tribune, “A controversial plan to build a landfill in rural northern San Diego County has been scrapped, and a key piece of the land has been sold to a Native American tribe that opposed the project. The deal announced Thursday puts an end to a 25-year fight over the proposed Gregory Canyon landfill that included several lawsuits and two countywide ballot measures.” There was a real concern that the groundwater in the basin under the proposed site could be at risk. This is despite assurances from the developers that every reasonable precaution has been taken to prevent those kinds of leaks. Those concerns came to an end five years ago when the Pala tribe stepped in. While this was one potential ecological disaster averted, there are dozens upon dozens of landfills throughout California and the nation that pose serious risks to the environment. Of course, the only absolute way to avoid those potential hazards is not to dump in the landfill at all. Unfortunately, that might not be practical given the expanding population. In fact, in California, there are only 77 landfills that serve a population of almost 39 million people. That works out to one landfill for every 500,000 people. However, continued efforts towards recycling can have a very positive impact on minimizing the need for more landfill volume. Junk King North San Diego - Making Junk Removal a Green Thing As we pointed out here already, the team at Junk King North San Diego is committed to keeping as much junk and debris out of our local landfills as possible. For us, being green is much more than a nice marketing tactic - we do it because being green is an integral and foundational part of our Junk King corporate mission. And the North San Diego team is wholly on board with that mission of operating an environmentally friendly business. Recycling-based junk removal was pioneered when Junk King started back in 2005 and we are proud to be a part of the greenest junk removal service in North America. So, what makes us green? For starters, we take all the material from every junk removal job to our recycling warehouses and sort through those materials to separate metals, plastics, wood, glass, textiles, and other reusable materials and items. This process includes old furniture and appliances because it’s all part of our green mission to ensure that as much junk as possible gets recycled, reused, or donated. In fact, Junk King is proud to be the only national company to operate with the goal of recycling 60 percent or more of every job using local sorting facilities. Best of all, you can “be green” as well when you work with Junk King North San Diego for your junk recycling and removal. Escondido Junk Recycling & Removal
