“I was looking for a business that would be around for the species, not so much [like] Blockbuster or Yellow Cab…I was looking for a business that would be sustainable as long as there’s [our] species on the planet…You know you hear a lot of different experts [approximating the amount of stuff the world can hold] in terms of the amount of people. You can hear anything from 10 billion to 15 billion. But [at] the rate that the population is exploding, we’re not too far away from 10 billion people, we’re not. And if we don’t start thinking more about recycling, donating, repurposing, [we’re] to the point where—if we don’t reuse the resources—[the resources] are going to be gone. So that’s [why we do this, and how] important our business is to the survival of the species. It really, truly is a survival of the species business.”
Van Buren’s concerns are what led him to franchise with Junk King. Junk King is known today as being the greenest junk removal service in North America—with a commitment of 60% of all hauling being reused, repurposed, donated, or recycled—and for Van Buren in 2012, that was the perfect philosophy model to reach his own goals. Five years after their original opening in California, Junk King opened their business to franchisors, and two years later Van Buren took the plunge.
The Van Buren Family: the Junk King Family of North Atlanta
Before Junk King North Atlanta opened, Van Buren had been looking for a way to help his family. At the time, one of his sons was expecting their first child while also working in a warehouse for little pay. Simultaneously, another Van Buren son was just graduating from business school. Once Van Buren saw an opportunity to franchise with Junk King, he only needed to speak to his sons to get them on board. Since then, Van Buren has recruited nearly all of his family into the business.
Van Buren’s son, John, once rode almost every truck with every haul. Years after having his first child, John has cut back his truck rides down to a few times a week—the rest of his time is cut between family and training duties for their combined 20+ employees.
Van Buren’s son, James, also rode on those same trucks with his brother. His time now is spent mostly away from the hauls; instead, he has become the face of their third location, Cobb County. He’s also in training now to become the eventual spearhead for the entire business after Van Buren retires.
Van Buren’s daughter, Christy, would join the team after her brothers. She started working a few hours a week in the Junk King office, and since then has become the machine behind the scenes. And, seeing as Van Buren has reported a revenue of around two million dollars, with more to come in the future, Christy has her work cut out for her.
Van Buren himself has spoken about what it’s like being the Junk King family of Atlanta, saying:
“My first son, John, had our first grandchild—and now we have nine…in previous years, [the grandchildren] all run around [during the holidays]. They wear Junk King shirts, Junk King hats, Junk King hoodies. We [often] have lively conversations about junk and junk removal when we have a family gets togethers.”
In regard to the grandkids, Van Buren sees the future of his family and his legacy:

While they were doing that, we hauled away some of the construction debris, and when they were all finished we hauled away some of their used equipment [too]. So, there were a lot of people that needed us when they were setting up their home offices as well.”
