If your boat is running and you do plan on trading it in, you’ll want to do a few things to it. Wash your boat and wax it so that it looks great. Basically, do the same things you’d do if you were going to trade in a car or put your home on the market. Make your boat look and function the best you can without spending a lot of money.

Sell it to a Private Buyer
Of course, you don’t have to sell your boat to a dealer. You can put an ad online or local paper, or you could reach out to people you know who are looking to buy a boat. Again, you’ll want to be sure your boat is in running order and make any small repairs you need to make. There are often some negotiations involved in selling to a private buyer, so do be ready for a counteroffer once they see your boat. They’re also likely going to want to take it for a test drive, so you may want to plan on meeting them at the lake.
You will want to set specific terms when advertising your boat. For example, you may want to stress that you’re selling it as-is, and you may want to request payment in specific ways. Some people are hesitant to take personal checks, so you may want to specify that buyers who want to pay by check will need a certified check from their bank. You’ll also want to specify if you’re selling your boat trailer or if the buyer will need to provide their own.
Donate Your Old Boat
There are boating schools, trade programs, camps, and other organizations that will take old boats. Some of these groups are designed to teach kids about boating safety, how to operate boats, or how to maintain them. If your boat is still operational and you don’t plan on selling it, donating it to one of these schools or organizations is a great option. As a bonus, you may be able to count your boat as a charitable donation on your taxes.
Sell the Parts
What do you do if your boat is going to cost too much to repair or simply cannot be repaired? If you can’t trade your boat in, sell it, or donate it, one option is to strip out the usable parts and sell them. Often, these owners will post looking for specific parts, especially if they cannot easily find parts for their boat. Others may be looking to pay a little less.
