The fall is here, and for many, that means it’s time to start looking for pumpkin spice coffees, Halloween decorations, and jackets. While the changing seasons do mean you need to start pulling out heavier clothing and blankets, it also means it’s time to do a little fall cleaning. While most people know about spring cleaning, and many even do some cleaning around the beginning of April, few people really think about fall cleaning. However, it’s just as important.
There are many reasons to give your house a good cleaning when the fall rolls around. It’s not just to get rid of stuff, either, although that’s never a bad reason to clean. You Can Rotate Your Closets and Other Items
When you spring clean, you may pull out your swimsuit, pool gear, and other outdoor items. You should do the same in the fall. Take the time to clean out and organize your closet, putting away your summer outfits and pulling out your heavy sweaters and other winter items. If you start your fall cleaning early, you may need to leave a few lightweight outfits in the closet just in case the weather turns back, but you can likely put away most of the tank tops and shorts.
Do this for your garage and shed, too. While you’re putting away your summer sports gear, move your winter stuff to the front and store the summer things in the back. This way, you won’t have to dig through everything just to find what you’re looking for. You’re not going to need your lawn mower, so why have it front and center in the shed? Put your snow shovel and skiing gear up front instead. Sort Through Your Winter and Holiday Items
Now is also a good time to look at your winter gear and holiday decorations to see if they’re all in good shape. When you start going through your winter clothing, you may find that some of it isn’t looking as good as it did last year. You may also find some things that you haven’t worn in several winters. If that’s the case, it might be time to put those items aside for donation.
It might be a lot of work to go through all of your holiday decorations, especially if you decorate for the fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and a winter holiday. While you might save your basement and attic purging for your spring cleaning, you should take the time to give your entire house a once-over during your fall cleaning. Prepare Your Guest Room
Another important part of fall cleaning is preparing your guest room. If you know you’re going to have company over the holidays, take time to make sure this space is at least somewhat ready. It can be easy for a guest room to become a catch-all space during the summer. It’s a convenient place to put things so that they’re out of the way, but too often, it becomes an “out of sight, out of mind” situation. Before you know it, your guest room is overflowing with stuff. You may then end up scrambling to find places to put all that stuff and get the room ready before your guests come. That usually leads to shoving things in closets or under the bed.
Instead, use your fall cleaning time to get things situated in your guest space. Put larger things in closets or your garage (in an organized fashion, of course!). You don’t necessarily have to prepare the room as if guests were coming tomorrow, but make sure most of the work is done. You never know when you might have someone drop in or need to change their holiday plans last-minute.
Include Outdoor Maintenance in Your Fall Cleaning
While doing some fall cleaning inside your home is helpful, the real bulk of your fall cleaning may need to take place outdoors. That’s because you’ll need to prepare your yard for the winter, especially if you live in an area that has very harsh winters or heavy snowfall.
The first step to take in preparing for the fall is to clean out your gutters. If they’re full of gunk, water could freeze up in them, which could cause the gutters to become unbalanced or, worse, even fall off. It could also cause water to overflow the gutters and end up on the sidewalk. If temperatures drop below freezing again, that could create sheets of ice on the sidewalk and cause you to slip.
Next, check your shed and other outdoor structures to make sure they’re sound. If you find small holes in the walls, it’s likely animals or insects will get into the space during the winter. You’ll want to repair those areas now so your shed doesn’t turn into a winter home for strays. Also check your deck, any outdoor stairs, and other spaces to make sure everything is sound.
If you have a concrete or paver patio, look for cracks. Water can get into these cracks and then freeze, expanding and causing the cracks to widen. If you have damaged pavers, go ahead and replace them now. If your concrete has large cracks, you may want to fill them using a special filler so the damage doesn’t get worse.
