5 Reasons Why You Should Use Junk King's E-Waste Recycling Services

5 Reasons Why You Should Use Junk King’s E-Waste Recycling Services

We live in a world of electronics, smartphones, and “smart” devices. Even our refrigerators can talk to us now.

For those of us born after, say, 1990, being surrounded by and almost dependent on electronic devices has always been the way of the world. Keyboarding has replaced typing in school, and kindergartners from the 1990s on have been introduced to desktop and laptop computers from the first day of school.

Today it is almost automatic to hand small babies a smartphone to occupy them while Mom shops or sits waiting for a doctor’s appointment.

And the average life cycle of most electronics is such that we find ourselves replacing devices every year or so. QuantumLifeCycle.com, “Today, electronics are typically only used for 1.5 to 13 years, with most averaging 4.5 years.”

Which leads us to the inevitable question: What happens to all those devices when they need to be disposed of?

When It Comes to Recycling, “Think Globally, Act Locally” Matters

Fortunately, we live in a region that is particularly keen on recycling. While the state of Virginia as a whole recently ranked 17 out of 51 (all the states and Washington DC) in the LawnStarter 2022’s Best States at Managing Waste report, we did manage to maintain a state-wide recycling rate of 45.5 percent.

According to another study, Virginia’s recycling rate is just under 42 percent, which is below the national average but is the 2nd highest rate in the south. And Fairfax City reported a 48.6 percent recycling rate in 2020.

On another side of the Capital Region, Montgomery County, Maryland’s 2020 recycling rate of 58.94 percent of solid waste created topped all other counties in Maryland, according to statistics released by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE).

All of this simply means that Capital District residents are certainly on board with the idea when it comes to recycling solid waste. And recycling electronic waste, or e-waste as it’s known is a part of that equation.

The problem for many people is not knowing how to best dispose of their old electronics – their household and commercial e-waste – in order to ensure that they are properly processed. In other words, ensuring that e-waste is recycled can be challenging.

One thing that is certain – it’s really not okay to just toss your old electronics into the trash.

In fact, according to the Fairfax County website,

“Virginia law requires that any manufacturer that sells (or offers for sale) more than 500 units of computer equipment in the state to provide an opportunity for customers to return or recycle their equipment at no charge.”

And although most types of common electronics are accepted at the e-cycling stations at the I-66 Transfer Station and I-95 Landfill Complex, for example, getting them is not always an easy or convenient task for many people in the D.C. region.

This is why Junk King, Washington DC, specializes in electronic waste removal and e-waste recycling.

The State of Electronics and E-Waste in the United States

Residents of the United States continue to manufacture and acquire huge quantities of electronic devices, gadgets, and appliances year after year.

While exact numbers are impossible to calculate or measure, it’s safe to say that Americans likely own millions upon millions of desktop computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and a wide variety of other handheld devices.

At any given time in the U.S., mountains and stockpiles of old, unwanted, or non-working electronics eventually end up in our nation’s solid waste stream.

In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that,

“According to a 2013 report by the Consumer Electronics Association, the average American household uses about 28 electronic products such as personal computers, mobile phones, televisions and electronic readers (e-readers).”

Because that estimate is almost ten years old, it is likely more than 30 devices today.

Which works out to about 35,000,000 electronic devices being used in Fairfax County alone! And where do all these electronics end up when they stop working, become obsolete, or get replaced by a new, better, or bigger version?

The EPA reported that Americans tossed out 2.7 million tons of unwanted “consumer electronics goods” back in 2018, the most recent figures available. Unfortunately, about 61.5 percent, or more than 1,660,000 tons.

And that was over three years ago.

That’s actually better than America’s recycling rates of many other waste materials. And that statistic also means that most e-waste ended up in landfills.

All of this is why calling on Junk King Washington DC, for your e-waste recycling needs is a smart and “green” alternative.

E-Waste Removal Services in Washington DC

e-waste removal services washington dc

Have ever looked around when you’re out in public and thought that just about everyone seems to own a cell phone? And, if you have to commute in or near the greater Washington DC area, you probably notice that there are also multitudes of laptops and tablets out there, too. When people upgrade and replace their existing electronics, they will need to dispose of their old electronics. An e-waste removal service is critical to ensure these items are properly disposed of, especially if you are a business.

According to Wikipedia

“The Washington D.C. metropolitan area is one of the most educated and most affluent metropolitan areas in the US. The metro area anchors the southern end of the densely populated Northeast megalopolis with an estimated total population of 6,216,589 as of the 2017 U.S. Census Bureau estimate, making it the sixth-largest metropolitan area in the nation.”

And the Pew Research Center adds that the vast majority of Americans – 96 percent – now own a cellphone of some kind.

“Along with mobile phones, Americans own a range of other information devices. Nearly three-quarters of U.S. adults now own desktop or laptop computers, while roughly half now own tablet computers and roughly half own e-reader devices.”

So, what happens to all these electronic devices when they stop working or become outdated?

Not to mention the wide variety of other electronics in our homes, offices, schools, hospitals, and other places – all the items that are known as “e-waste” or electronic waste when disposed of. And we continue to generate record numbers of tons of the stuff!

A report on global e-waste disposal from last year revealed that the year 2019 set a record for the amount of e-waste generated worldwide. It was determined that 53.6 million metric tons of discarded phones, computers, appliances, and other gadgets were disposed of in some form or another.

Unfortunately, it was also found that only 17 percent of that e-waste was known to have been recycled. The vast majority of it – 83 percent – was either sent to a landfill, incinerated, or shipped somewhere to illegal international e-waste dumping grounds.

What Are You Supposed to Do with E-Waste?

You may be wondering what’s so special about waste electronic items, or e-waste? Aren’t they just collections of plastic, glass, and metal?

Those are fair questions since, on the surface, most electronic devices and components seem to be harmless. Why not just throw them in the garbage? The fact is that, before they are disposed of, most all electronics are harmless.

According to one source,

“The EPA (federal Environmental Protection Agency) has dumped electronic waste into a special category of materials dubbed ‘universal waste‘. The category includes any material that would usually be deemed hazardous waste, but presently the hazardous substances are contained within and pose no immediate threat.”

However, once those e-waste items end up in a landfill, their status changes.

“Universal waste is considered hazardous once electronics disposal has been carried out, and particularly so if the final disposition ends up in a landfill. What happens when electronic gadgets (from batteries to phones to computers and more) sit in a landfill for a prolonged period of time is that the chemicals in them start seeping into the ground and water resources.”

These chemicals include mercury, lead, and dioxins. And, depending on the component, there can be a mixture of other hazardous waste products such as arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, selenium, and PCBs.

All these by-products of e-waste can have toxic or corrosive effects on living things, such as humans, animals, and plants.

Because of this, depending on where you live, throwing away your electronics might be illegal. Take California, Illinois, New York, and North Carolina, for example – these are states that have added electronics to the list of items that are banned from going into landfills.

As of a few years ago, 25 states and Washington DC had electronics recycling laws, most of which are producer responsibility statutes.

For District residents, ZeroWaste DC notes that,

“HHW (household hazardous waste) should not be put in trash or recycling containers for DPW to collect, nor should they be included with items for bulk trash collection.”

While there are options provided by some municipal agencies for e-waste drop-off days, you still have to do the hauling and dropping off, and only on the days and times dictated by the public works agency.

If only there were a more flexible, convenient, and reliable option for e-waste removal services in Washington DC and the surrounding area.

Good news! You can take care of your e-waste removal with one call to Junk King Washington DC.
