Keeping E-waste out of landfills

Junk King Fairfax is 100% landfill free, which means we recycle 100% of the e-waste we haul.

According to DoSomething.org, an incredible 80 to 85 percent of tech junk, or e-waste, ends up in landfills or incinerators, and can release toxic gases into the air.  Again,  Junk King keeps 100% of the e-waste we collect out of the landfills.

1. 80 to 85 percent of electronic products were discarded in landfills or incinerators, which can release certain toxics into the air.
2. E-waste represents 2 percent of America’s trash in landfills, but it equals 70 percent of overall toxic waste. The extreme amount of lead in electronics alone causes damage in the central and peripheral nervous systems, the blood and the kidneys.
3. 20 to 50 million metric tons of e-waste are disposed worldwide every year.
4. Cell phones and other electronic items contain high amounts of precious metals like gold or silver. Americans dump phones containing over $60 million in gold/silver every year.
5. Only 12.5 percent of e-waste is currently recycled.
6. For every 1 million cell phones that are recycled, 35,274 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered.
7. Recycling 1 million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by 3,657 U.S. homes in a year.
8. E-waste is still the fastest growing municipal waste stream in America, according to the EPA.
9. A large number of what is labeled as “e-waste” is actually not waste at all, but rather whole electronic equipment or parts that are readily marketable for reuse or can be recycled for materials recovery.
10. It takes 539 pounds of fossil fuel, 48 pounds of chemicals, and 1.5 tons of water to manufacture one computer and monitor
11. Electronic items that are considered to be hazardous include, but are not limited to:
• Televisions and computer monitors that contain cathode ray tubes
• LCD desktop monitors
• Laptop computers with LCD displays
• LCD televisions
• Plasma televisions
• Portable DVD players with LCD screens.

Imagine how much better we’d all be if all haulers met Junk King’s standard of 100% landfree.

Disposing Latex Paint

Latex paint is not a hazardous material; it is a ceramic. Oil based paint is indeed hazardous waste.

If you need to get rid old latex paint, follow these simple steps:
1. Remove the lid and place can in a safe, well-ventilated area.
2. Allow a few days to let the latex dry to ceramic form.
3. Put lids and cans of dried latex into a plastic trash bag along with your regular household trash.

For a faster drying—as fast as 30 minutes–you can use waste paint hardener is available at paint stores and most area hardware stores. Mulch, kitty litter, or shredded paper may also be used as a drying agent.

Some counties limit the number of cans you may dispose for each pick-up. Most counties request that you put the trash bags in rigid trashcans. Contact your county or trash hauler for more details.

Usually, the paint can you put into your trash gets recycled. The can is incinerated where the dried paint burns off of the metal can. The facility recovers the remaining steel from the ash and collects the steel for recycling.

Also, county residents can take paint to their county disposal sites:

Alexandria: 3224 Colvin Street, Alexandria, VA

Arlington: 3155 South Fern Street Arlington, VA‎  22202

Fairfax: 4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax, VA 22030

If you have oil-based paints or lots of latex paint, call us at Junk King and we’ll put you in touch with our partner Yuk Old Paint, who will help you properly dispose of the paint.

Being Green Can Be Economical

When people see the word ‘green’ advertised for a service, they often think it is going to cost them more than a service that is not eco-friendly.

They know that some businesses charge a premium for ‘green.’ From organic food markets to eco-friendly products, brand prices are often marked up because they are ‘green.’

Junk King is different. We provide the greenest junk removal service at prices 30% below our major competitors. We are 100% landfill free because we have a warehouse where we sort materials for proper disposal and we have a network of end-users of everything we haul. Even the trash we collect goes to an incinerator that uses the biomass to generate electricity to power 75,000 homes in Fairfax.

The great majority of junk haulers do not have a place to sort debris so they pay the $50 to $80 per ton at the dumps. By using our warehouse and labor to sort, donate, repurpose, and recycle, we save more on the dumping fees than we pay the labor to sort.

By working smarter, we can give our customers in Northern Virginia the best of both worlds – affordable and green services.

Recycling E-Waste in Fairfax, Arlington, and Alexandria

Here are some tips to dispose of e-waste properly for do-it-yourself.

E-waste includes CDs (players & discs), Cellular Phones, Computer Components, Computers, Copy Machines, DVDs (players & discs), Fax Machines, Household Phones, Internet Devices, Keyboard & Mice, Miscellaneous Wiring, Monitors, Motors, MP3, Players, Printers, Scanners, Stereo Equipment, Televisions, and Video Game Consoles.

Fairfax residents can take e-waste to I-66 Transfer Station, 4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax, VA 22030. Fees usually apply. One can expect to pay $10 to $20 to dispose of old CRT style monitors and TVs. These old monitors have up to 5 pounds of lead each. However, you can dispose e-waste for free on Fairfax County’s Electric Sundays. The county funds this program at approximately $250,000 per year to encourage residents to dispose e-waste properly. Check the county’s website for dates and details: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpwes/recycling/electric-sunday.htm

Arlington Residents can take their e-waste to the HHM Facility and Electronics Collection and Recycling Center (ECRC), Water Pollution Control Plant, 530 31st St. S. (WPCP Gate #3) Saturday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. You can contact the County and schedule an e-waste pickup, although fees around $10 for computers to $20 for monitors apply. See the County website for details: https://freshaireva.us/ai1ec_event/ecare/?instance_id=61.

Alexandria residents can take e-waste to 3224 Colvin Street. See the city’s site for hours, details, and applicable fees: https://alexandriava.gov/tes/solidwaste/info/default.aspx?id=19206

If you have a lot of e-waste or you have other mixed junk you need hauled away, you can save time and money by calling Junk King. We charge by volume rather than the item, so usually our cost for disposing e-waste is significantly less that the local government fees.   Junk King is 100% landfill free. We – like our local governments – are committed to preserving the environment for the generations to come.
