What can you do with 7 million pounds of food waste and yard clippings? If you’re in the Costa Mesa Sanitary District, then that waste can be turned into energy. It’s all part of a new pilot program that is encouraging residents to separate their foods scraps just like they separate their plastics, papers and soda cans. Those 7 million pounds was collected in just the first six months of the program and in a very limited test market. The sanitary department hopes to use the findings of this pilot program to expand into the rest of Costa Mesa and beyond. All of that collected waste is being recycled as fuel for energy that powers the city. It’s a vital step in achieving the goal of zero waste.
Since the beginning of their company, Junk King has also been dedicated to this kind of recycling program. Although they don’t do the actual repurposing work, Junk King strives to get the bulk of what they collect to those certified recycling centers. This is extremely important when it comes to e-waste. Although California has led the charge with banning plastic bags, it has not banned e-waste from going into landfills, at least not officially. Still, most folks know that you can get rid of old computers and televisions by dumping them in the trash. Instead, they have to be dismantled and disposed of piece-by-piece. Junk King knows who accepts that kind of waste and it happy to make those extra drop offs.
The other component to Junk King’s eco-friendly disposal policy is to donate those items that might be of use to a charity or church thrift store. This is where things like clothing, dishes, pots, pans, toys and baby furniture is of the most use. The Junk King crews have all been trained to spot those items that can be pulled out and donated. Don’t worry about separating your junk. It will all be taken care of.
Although all those drop offs sound like a lot of extra work, you won’t be charged an extra fee. Junk King bases its fees on volume and not weight. One rate covers all the work, transportation and disposal. Want to recycle and reduce your carbon footprint without lifting a finger? Then bring in Junk King.
