For the second year in a row, Junk King San Diego was excited to partner with The Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego in their Annual Holiday Life Changers event.
And what made it even more fun for us was the opportunity to participate in facilitating a super cool toy drive!
We had toy drop-off locations at the local Shell station that our trucks fuel up at every day, and at a local 7-Eleven. Families, individuals, and other community members had the opportunity to drop toys off at both locations from November 9th until December 6th.
Then, the mission was to round up all those wonderful toys from our friends and neighbors and make sure they were safely delivered the toys to the Boys & Girls club on December 8th. We were joined by countless other local companies and organizations, all of whom participated in the toy drive.
In San Diego, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego Changes Lives
The holiday season has traditionally been a time when individuals and organizations rally to support worthy causes, charitable organizations, and various causes within their communities.
San Diego is no different. And Junk King San Diego, which has always had the needs and concerns of its community and neighbors ranked high in our priorities, is no different. In fact, we feel that giving back to our community should happen all year long. And we strive to do as much as we can in ways such as our green-based operations and helping to keep our city clean.
The holiday season gives us even more opportunities to give back, as well. So, a good question might be, “Why the Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego?”
And one good answer would be that we appreciate the opportunity to invest in the lives and futures of our community’s children.
A Rich History and a Powerful Legacy: The Boys & Girls Clubs
Although many people are quite familiar with this organization, not everyone knows the story of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Their national website relates that story,
“The Boys & Girls Clubs of America had its beginnings in 1860 with three women in Hartford, Connecticut – Mary Goodwin, Alice Goodwin and Elizabeth Hammersley. Believing that boys who roamed the streets should have a positive alternative, they organized the first Club. With character development as the cornerstone of the experience, the Club focused on capturing boys’ interests, improving their behavior, and increasing their personal expectations and goals. A cause was born.
In 1906, several Boys Clubs decided to affiliate. The Federated Boys Clubs in Boston was formed with 53 member organizations – this marked the start of a nationwide Movement and our national organization. To recognize the fact that girls are a part of our cause, the national organization’s name was changed to Boys & Girls Clubs of America in 1990.”
Throughout its formative years after 1906, the organization expanded, and the number of local clubs multiplied. And, in 1941, a Club was founded in Logan Heights, an urban neighborhood in central San Diego.
In the 80 years since, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego has grown to include twelve Clubs, a teen center, and four school satellite sites. Today, these Clubs serve more than 22,000 youth from all over the San Diego region each year through after-school programs and summer day camps.
The Clubs change lives through quality youth programs and guidance in a safe, affordable, and fun environment. The Clubs serve kids ages 5 to 18 with programs focused on academic success, character development, and healthy lifestyles. These efforts take place at 19 community-based sites countywide and cover a service area of over 2,000 square miles from National City to Borrego Springs.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego: Holiday Life Changers
Having participated before, we had a deep sense of the importance of Junk King’s HAULidays Toy Drive in Partnership with Boys & Girls Club of America effort.
To help bring smiles to the less fortunate and at-risk children during the holiday season, we launched the second annual HAULidays Toy Drive and succeeded in collecting donations of hundreds of new, unwrapped toys. Of course, we didn’t do all this alone: Junk King San Diego partnered with several businesses in the community to place donation drop-off bins for toy collection.
Once the time had come to “wrap up” the toy collection phase of the toy drive, our Junk King crews picked up all those donated toys and delivered them to the local Boys & Girls Club Greater San Diego. All those toys that we had the privilege of collecting and delivering, were then given to thousands of underprivileged and at-risk children in the greater San Diego community.
And, to those of you who donated toys, everyone here at Junk King and the Boys & Girls Club of America appreciates and thanks you for helping us spread joy this holiday season!

“We had so much fun with our corporate partners, Club supporters, and volunteers who hosted toy drives, adopted families for the holidays, wrapped thousands of toys, assembled meal baskets, and organized everything to be delivered to Clubhouses.”
Our Junk Haulers Loved the Opportunity to Haul Toys and Help Change Lives
We were greatly appreciative that Junk King San Diego was able to partner with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego to bring some holiday cheer to children across San Diego County. Junk King staff had the privilege to deliver hundreds of new toys and gifts to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego as part of its annual Holiday Life Changers event.
Many other volunteers were on the receiving end of our deliveries during the event to help wrap and organize gifts for the kids, as well as assembling holiday meal baskets for Club members and their families.
All of the toys and gifts were donated by a variety of businesses, organizations, and individual community members during the month-long drive in San Diego County. The gifts were wrapped and distributed during the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego holiday celebrations throughout the month of December.
We are proud to partner with The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego and to play a small part in helping to change and improve the lives of so many of the children in our community.
