And some materials such as various plastics and fibers are not recyclable.
There are a few other things you should consider, however, when recycling your old furniture.
While it can be a great option, you can’t always just put it all into a truck and take it to your local recycling facility. Many recycling service centers have limits on what they will take. In addition, because many furniture items are composed of a variety of materials, these often need to be dismantled first.
Some materials are easily recycled, while others such as certain foam padding materials, require special handling. For example, all steel or aluminum parts can be used for scrap metal, while most wood furniture can be accepted for recycling purposes.
However, like most items that are likely constructed of mixed materials, it’s always best to call first before hauling your old furniture to an East Bay waste transfer station facility or landfill.
Thinking About a New Home for Your Old Furniture
Have you ever found yourself driving along some backroad between, say, Danville and Antioch, and you notice an old sofa sitting on the side of the road? Or maybe it’s a well-worn recliner chair resting on the shoulder of the road just outside of Castro Valley?
