The oldest home in downtown San Diego is the Davis-Horton house. This was a home that was a kind of pre-cut kit that was made in Portland Maine in 1850 and then shipped around Cape Horn to San Francisco. It was meant as a boarding house for gold miners but by the time it got to California’s coast the gold rush was winding down. That made the home offered at a reduced price and it was scooped up by William Heath Davis a wealthy merchant who brought the “kit” down to San Diego.
