The Best Way to Dumpster Rent in Contra Costa County

dumpster rental services

Renting a dumpster isn’t something we usually have to do all that often, which can make it a bit of a mystifying process. Luckily, Junk King is here to help. Unlike most dumpster rental companies, Junk King makes dumpster rental in Contra Costa as easy as 1-2-3 and all at the most affordable rates in the industry. Whether you’re a homeowner looking for some help with spring cleaning or a business handling a massive renovation, renting a dumpster is a great way to save time and energy during your big project.

What is the Average Cost of Dumpster Rental in Contra Costa County?

The average dumpster rental cost can vary pretty wildly depending on where you are, who you’re renting from, and how much space you need. In Contra Costa County, the average price can range from about $500 a week for a 10-cubic-yard dumpster to around $900 a week for a 40-yard dumpster. That’s a bit higher than the national average, but unfortunately, that’s just the price we all pay for living in the Bay Area. At Junk King, we do things a little differently by charging standard rates across the country, so the price will be a little lower than our competitors in more expensive areas like Contra Costa.

How Much Does it Cost to Hire Junk King in Contra Costa County?

For most dumpster rental companies, the price is going to depend pretty heavily on the size of the dumpster. This is simple enough, but it requires the customer to estimate the amount of trash their project is going to generate ahead of time. Often, these companies will also encourage you to rent a bigger dumpster if you’re on the fence since you don’t want to run out of space. This is one of the ways that rental companies squeeze a little extra money out of their customers, and it’s generally pretty unavoidable from your end.

However, at Junk King, price is thought of differently. Instead of charging you for the space you think you’ll need before you start, we only charge you for the space you actually end up using. We think this is a more honest way of doing business, and our customers agree.

At Junk King, instead of offering dumpsters of different sizes, we give everyone our special MINI dumpsters. The actual price of the rental, however, won’t be finalized until after your project is finished and we come back to pick up the dumpster. If you’ve filled the MINI dumpster up all the way, then you’ll pay the full price of the rental – $520, still lower than similarly sized dumpsters in the Contra Costa area. However, if you only fill the dumpster halfway, you get a discount of about 30%, leaving you with a price of only $360. Finally, if you don’t even fill the dumpster up to the halfway line, you only have to pay the minimum price of $220. This is especially helpful for homeowners who will only generate a small amount of trash since the smallest dumpster available will still cost you about $500 at most rental companies, even if you don’t fill it all the way.

5 Ways Dumpster Rentals Can Benefit Your Organization

There are a ton of different reasons why a business or individual might want to rent a dumpster. Some of them are pretty obvious, but there are some that you might not have thought about before. Here are only a few times when you might find yourself needing to rent a dumpster:

  • Building Construction and Demolition – Anyone who’s ever worked in construction knows how much leftover debris and junk is generated by even the smallest job. That’s why at least one dumpster is an absolute necessity on every construction site.
  • Residential Cleanouts – You don’t have to be a professional to rent a dumpster. Clearing out your garage and doing a little spring cleaning is a lot easier with a dumpster nearby to hold all the junk you want to get rid of.
  • Landscaping and Gardening – Likewise, when the weather warms up and it’s time to start clearing out your garden, a dumpster is a great place to put all that yard waste.
  • Lawncare Companies – The same goes for professional landscapers. Grass trimmings, excess branches, and even soil can be tossed in one of our MINI dumpsters.
  • Industrial Workshops – While hazardous industrial waste isn’t allowed in a dumpster, there are still plenty of appliances and electronics that you might want to clear out of your workshop.

What are the Different Types of Dumpsters Available?

For the most part, you don’t need to worry too much about the different types of dumpsters. The vast majority of what you can rent will be roll-off containers, also known as portable dumpsters. These are the big metal boxes on wheels that you can drop in your driveway or behind your business and fill with junk. Roll-off dumpsters typically have the highest capacity and are ideal for big projects that last for a set period of time. After the project is over, the dumpster is hauled away.

Commercial dumpsters, also called front-load dumpsters, are the ones you see parked out behind most businesses and apartment buildings. They’re typically smaller, with a capacity of about 8 cubic feet at most. Commercial dumpsters are also rented from companies, but it’s typically for a long-term standing contract. They’re generally dumped into a truck about once a week or so and returned to the same location.

What are the Different Benefits of Using a Trash Bin Company in Contra Costa County?

Mattress Disposal

Mattress Recycling in the Bay Area

When you think about recycling, a mattress might not be the first thing to pop into your head. We don’t usually get rid of our mattresses until they’re well and truly worn out, so the obvious instinct is to just toss them in the trash. However, the materials inside your old mattress are valuable and can be easily reused. As much of a hassle as it can be to drag a mattress around, you should really consider recycling them instead of just throwing them in the landfill. Every little bit helps when it comes to combating climate change and environmental damage.

How Mattresses are Made and What Happens When They are Discarded

For the most part, making a mattress is pretty straightforward. They’re essentially just a wooden frame, metal springs, and then a bunch of padding to keep you comfortable. The makeup of the cover and padding can vary pretty wildly, but the frame and the springs will usually be the same universally.

It’s the springs and frame that are most key to mattress recycling. Wood and metal are both easily reused materials, and the foam or fibers that make up the cushion are often recyclable as well. What happens when you recycle a mattress is pretty much the same as when you recycle anything else. The mattress will be taken apart, different materials are separated, and then anything salvageable is shipped off or sold to manufacturers.

Springs are usually melted down and sold to foundries, wood is often used to make particleboard or as a fuel source, and the padding can be compressed and used in a wide range of other products, like pet beds. Recycling has taken over as the most common form of mattress disposal mostly because they’re so very easy to take apart and reuse.

Recycling Old Mattresses Has a Lot of Benefits to the Environment and Will Be Helpful in Creating a Cleaner World

Modern-day eco-friendly mattresses are made of materials that have a lower environmental impact of disposal, which means most of the benefits of recycling mattresses have to do with the manufacturing process. Reusing wood and metal means manufacturers don’t have to cut down more trees or mine more iron, which reduces pollution and eases the drain on the planet’s limited natural resources. Reducing the need for new wood is especially important since it allows our forests to recover and grow back, improving the quality of the air.

mattress recycling

Another way to make an impact is to look for green mattresses when it’s time to buy a new one. There are plenty of companies these days specializing in sustainable and eco-friendly manufacturing, including mattresses made of entirely recycled or sustainable materials. These businesses are often carbon negative, use minimal packaging, and only use materials that they know won’t impact the environment. Though they can be a little pricy sometimes, we recommend looking for an eco-friendly mattress next time you need something new to sleep on. As a bonus, these mattresses are usually some of the most comfortable ones out there.

How to Recycle Your Old or Disposable Mattress with 6 Simple Steps

When it comes to mattress recycling, cost and convenience are the two biggest factors to weigh. You have a few different options available to you, and the best one for you will depend on your individual situation. Here are a few simple steps you can take to get rid of your old mattress:

Prepare the Mattress – Before taking any steps, you should get the mattress ready to be moved. Strip any sheets and covers off first, and if you’re planning on moving it yourself, take it slow and have someone help you.

Clean the Mattress – Generally, you shouldn’t have to do this. However, if you have fleas or bedbugs on your mattress, or if it’s stained with blood or some other bodily fluid, most recycling centers won’t take it.

Take It to a Recycling Station – Most cities have recycling stations where you can bring big or bulky objects like mattresses. There’s usually a fee, but it’s generally pretty small, under $15 or $20 in most cases. The biggest downside here is that you have to move the mattress by yourself. That’s fine if you have a truck, but strapping a mattress to the top of a regular car can get tricky.

New call-to-action

Call for a Bulky Item Pickup – In the Bay Area, the city will have large items hauled away from your curb for free once a year for single-family homes and twice a year for apartment buildings. This is pretty easy and it won’t cost you anything unless you’ve run out of yearly pickups. You will have to schlep the mattress down to the curb though. If you’re wondering “Do I have to be present for a pickup of an old mattress?” However, the answer is no.

Sell It – If your mattress still has some life in it, you can sell it online. However, you don’t know for sure if it’ll end up being recycled once the buyer is done with it.

Hire a Professional – If you want to entirely avoid the hassle of moving the mattress, you can hire a professional junk removal company like Junk King Contra Costa. This means you won’t have to do any work at all, but it will cost more than the other options, so it’s best to save this for bigger projects like spring cleaning or moving to a new home.

Mattress Disposal vs Mattress Recycling: Which is Better?

When getting rid of a mattress, you should really opt for the most eco-friendly disposal available. Recycling is always a better choice than landfill disposal, so we recommend recycling whenever possible.

How to Take Apart and Recycle a Trampoline

Recycle a Trampoline

Do you need to recycle a trampoline right away? Click Here.

How to Prevent Serious Injuries When Dismantling a Trampoline

Before taking it down for the winter, the first question you should ask yourself is not “How do you dismantle a trampoline?” but rather “How do you do it safely?” While it’s not particularly difficult or dangerous to take a trampoline apart, there are still a few things you should do to make sure you don’t hurt yourself.

The first thing you’ll need is a pair of solid work gloves. Anyone who’s done their research into trampoline safety knows how easy it is to scratch yourself or pinch your fingers in the metal springs that hold it all together. Not only can this be painful, but any rust on the metal can hold potentially dangerous bacteria or even tetanus. To avoid infection, wear long sleeves and keep your gloves on while dismantling the trampoline.

full service junk removal

If you’re feeling extra cautious, use safety glasses or a pair of goggles to protect your eyes. While it’s unlikely, the tension in the springs can sometimes cause them to snap back when disconnected from the jumping mat, so it’s not a bad idea to have a little extra protection.

Step-by-step Instructions on How to Take Apart Your Trampoline

Step One: Preparation and Cleaning

Before taking the trampoline apart, you’ll first have to gather the necessary tools. Besides the gloves and safety goggles, you’ll also need:

● A screwdriver or electric drill to unscrew the metal frame

● A spring puller to detach the springs from the jumping mat

● A wrench to loosen any nuts on the frame

Make sure to clean your trampoline completely before taking it apart. Use a broom to brush away any leaves or dirt on the mat, clean away any grime with warm soapy water, and then use a hose to spray down the mat. If any rust has formed on the metal pieces, you can use rust remover or lemon juice to clean it off.

Step Two: Remove the Net, Poles, and Other Accessories

After cleaning the mat, the next step is to remove any extra pieces. Untie any basketball hoops or other accessories from the poles, then untie the net. It’s a good idea to clean and fold the net so it’s easier to store over the winter. The poles may be attached to the frame itself; if so, just use the screwdriver or drill to take them apart. We recommend wrapping the poles in plastic or some other cover to protect them while they’re being stored.

Step Three: Untie the Safety Pad

The safety pad that covers the springs is usually pretty easy to remove. They’re generally attached with ties that go around the springs, so just reach underneath the trampoline and undo the knots. You can use a key or screwdriver to help with particularly difficult or troublesome knots. Once you’ve removed the pad, just fold it up for storage.

Step Four: Disassemble the Springs

This is the tricky part. You can technically use pliers or a screwdriver to disconnect the springs from the mat, but we recommend a proper trampoline spring puller, also known as a T-hook. A T-hook is just a long, thin metal rod with a handle on one end and a hook on the other.

Starting with the inside end of the spring, hook the spring puller into the spring’s coil and pull it towards the center of the trampoline until it comes free of the V-ring on the mat. Then, simply unhook the other end from the frame and repeat with the other springs. Don’t worry, the first one is the most difficult – they get easier as you go.

Step Five: Fold the Mat

Once the springs have been removed, the mat will be fully disconnected from the frame. Before putting it away, give it a quick inspection to make sure there are no holes or tears. If you find any, you can use a trampoline repair kit to patch the damage. Fold up the mat until it’s small enough to store, and then you’re almost done.

Step Six: Dismantle the Frame

At this point, all that’s left is to take the metal frame apart. Some trampolines have wind pegs to keep them from blowing away; if yours is one of these, remove the pegs first. To disassemble the frame, use the screwdriver or drill and the wrench to take out any screws or bolts and just take it apart piece by piece. You might need some help with this part, especially if you have a larger trampoline. Make sure to organize the screws and nuts as you go, since they can often be different sizes. Once you’re finished, collect the pieces and pack them away.

Recycling Options for Disassembled Trampolines

If you’re trying to get rid of your trampoline instead of just putting it away for the winter, the simplest way to do that is to just get it recycled. We recommend at least recycling the metal frame from your trampoline since metal is valuable and easy to repurpose, but usually, you can take the whole thing to a recycling center. Different centers will have different policies on recycling trampolines, so make sure to give them a call before just showing up since they may not take every piece.

If you want to avoid the hassle of a recycling center, you can always give Junk King Contra Costa a call. We’ll happily stop by your house, pick up the trampoline, and take it to our processing center to be recycled.

Tips for Holiday Junk Removal

holiday junk removal

After all the work that goes into the holiday season, the last thing anybody wants is to keep doing more. However, the holidays can leave your house in a pretty rough state when everything is said and done, and it can be a real pain to clean everything up again afterward. There are dishes to clean, needles to sweep, decorations to take down, and often bedding to clean as well – plus all the junk and trash generated by the holiday festivities. At Junk King, trash removal is our specialty, so here are a few tips and tricks that can make your Christmas clean-up a little more merry – starting with the tree.

Disposing of Your Christmas Tree Rubbish

While we’d all like to fantasize about taking down the tree on December 26th, for most of us it’s a lot closer to the New Year by the time we finally get it taken care of. However, you should be careful not to let your tree stay up for too long. As the tree slowly dies and the needles dry out, they become more and more of a fire hazard, especially when covered in electric lights. No need to rush things right after Christmas, but sooner is better than later.

Once you’re ready, start by taking everything off the tree, including tinsel, lights, ornaments, and the tree stand. Even if you’re planning on throwing some decorations away, you can’t leave them on the tree itself. Then, cover the tree with a plastic sheet or an old blanket to prevent sap and needles from getting all over your floor. In Contra Costa, you can leave a Christmas tree on the curb as long as it’s not blocking the road or the sidewalk, so there’s no need to drive it out somewhere. If your tree is taller than five feet, however, you’ll have to cut it in half before taking it to the curb.

New call-to-action

What Can You Recycle?

Once the presents have been unwrapped and festivities are over, it’s time to figure out what to do with the big pile of trash next to the tree. If possible, you should always try to recycle everything you can. Being environmentally conscious is more important than ever, so avoiding the landfill is a worthy goal. That being said, not everything can be recycled, so here’s a quick rundown of what you should toss in the recycling bin instead of the trash.

Here’s the good news: most wrapping paper can be recycled. That’s likely going to make up the majority of the leftover trash after the presents have been unwrapped, so throwing all the paper in the recycling bin is a good way to get started. Cardboard boxes can also be recycled, so just toss them in the bin as well. Make sure you break them down first though since they take up less space that way. Less space in the bin means less space in the truck, and it’s better to prevent the drivers from having to take multiple trips. Some holiday cards can also be recycled, as long as there are no plastic pieces on them. If there’s plastic on your cards, you can just tear off the plastic bits and recycle the rest.

What Can You NOT Recycle?

junk king truck

Unfortunately, not all post-holiday trash can be recycled. Anything with plastic, like packaging from toys or other gifts, has to be thrown in the regular trash instead of the recycling bin. You should also avoid recycling items like Christmas lights, ribbons, and garlands. These objects are what recycling experts call “tanglers,” and they can damage or clog up the sorting machines used by recycling centers. Each time a machine becomes clogged, it has to be shut down and manually cleared, which takes valuable time and can even put workers at risk when they’re feeling around inside the machines.

Food waste also can’t be recycled, at least not in the regular bin. Any food waste should go in the composting bin instead of the regular recycling one, since it can’t be recycled and only leads to impurities once the process is over. You can also just throw food waste in the trash bin if it’s easier, though composting is an important part of being environmentally healthy.

Getting Rid of Old Items You No Longer Need

Once presents have been received, then comes the question of what to do with the old items you’ve just replaced. Rather than just throwing them away, consider donating them to a local charity so someone else can use them – as long as they’re in good working order. Most charities take clothes, toys, shoes, bedding, sporting goods, collectibles, and electronics, so give that a shot before consigning your old belongings to the rubbish bin.

If you can’t find a charity, many of these items can be recycled as well. It’s especially important to recycle electronics, as the minerals used in them are in short supply. If current electronic consumption continues to grow without recycling measures being implemented, some of the rare earth ores used to make batteries, screens, and other components could be used up by the middle of this century. Before you throw out that old phone or TV, check to see if there’s a nearby recycling center that takes e-waste.

Everything You Need to Know About Appliance Removal in Contra Costa

appliance removal

As a homeowner or a renter, there are few things more satisfying than upgrading an appliance. Picking up a new fridge, dishwasher, or washer-dryer can make your daily routine so much easier and more enjoyable. However, then comes the question of what to do with the old appliance. Unfortunately, you can’t just chuck a microwave or air conditioning unit in the trash, which means doing a little research and making sure you’re disposing of everything properly.

Let Us Do the Work For You

If you’d prefer to skip all the trouble and just bring in the experts, Junk King Contra Costa just so happens to specialize in removing appliances of pretty much every shape and size. Just point to what you need to be removed and we’ll take it to our truck and haul it away, easy as pie. With Junk King, you always have the peace of mind from knowing your appliance is going to be handled properly once we haul it away. The first place we take any appliance is to our sorting center, where we take a look and decide what should be done with it. If it still works, we’ll donate it to a local charity, otherwise, the parts are safely recycled to be used in other products.

Of course, if you’d rather handle the removal process yourself, here are a few tips you should keep in mind.

New call-to-action

Be Careful With Appliance Refrigerants!

refrigerator disposal contra costa

Some appliances, like fridges, freezers, and air conditioning units, contain pockets of gasses called refrigerants, usually Freon gas. Freon can be damaging to the ozone layer if released, so there are plenty of regulations in place to make sure appliances containing Freon are handled properly. If you mishandle, damage, or even tip over an old fridge, you can accidentally release the Freon gas into the atmosphere, which can have devastating results for the environment. Improper disposal of appliances containing Freon can also land you a hefty fine from the state, so make sure you’ve done your research before dumping the old A/C unit somewhere.

In the state of California, regulations state that refrigerants like Freon can only be removed by a licensed professional, which means you can only dispose of your fridge or A/C unit at an authorized disposal center. Attempting to remove the Freon yourself can not only be dangerous but can land you in hot water with the authorities, as well as cause damage to the environment. Even a single molecule of gas like Freon can destroy over 100,000 molecules of ozone in the atmosphere,  so it’s important to be responsible. When it comes to refrigerants, leave the disposal work to the professionals, whether that’s an appliance recycler at a disposal station or a professional appliance removal service like Junk King.

What About Electronics?

E-Waste

Today’s smart appliances can be incredibly convenient, but the embedded microchips and computer processors can make disposal a bit more of a hassle. Smart fridges, dishwashers, and other appliances with computer components are technically considered electronic waste, or “e-waste,” and so they come with their own set of rules for disposal.

E-waste can’t be put in a landfill in the state of California, so appliances with computer parts have to be handled carefully. This is because most electronics contain chemicals that can be hazardous to you or the people around you if not disposed of properly. Currently, while e-waste makes up only 2% of the trash generated in the US every year, it accounts for about 70% of the toxic waste in landfills across the country.

Electronic waste is also full of rare and valuable materials that can be recycled and used again in other products. Circuit boards, microchips, and other computer components are made with copper, silver, gold, and even rarer minerals like palladium. Many of these minerals are increasingly difficult to find, making e-waste recycling more important than ever.

At Junk King, e-waste is one of our specialties, and we make sure that every ounce of rare earth minerals is being extracted and recycled from the appliances and electronics we take in. According to the EPA, only about 12% of electronic waste is currently being properly recycled in the United States, with the rest ending up in landfills. We think it’s important for all of us to do our part to get that number closer to 100%.

Make Sure to Stay Safe!

It might seem a little histrionic, but lifting heavy appliances can really do a number on your body, especially if you’re not sure how to do it the right way. At Junk King, our hauling professionals are trained in the best techniques for lifting and carrying heavy objects, but the average person might not know how to move their appliances in the safest possible way.

First things first, make sure to stretch! It might sound like overkill, but a quick stretch before any strenuous activity is a must. Stretching keeps your muscles flexible and lengthy, giving you a full range of motion and strength. If you perform any physical activity without stretching, your muscles can be tight or pulled short, which means you won’t have as much strength when you try to lift that fridge, so take a couple of minutes to stretch it out first!

You’ve probably heard this tip before, but lifting with your legs is probably the single most important thing you can do to avoid hurting yourself while moving appliances or other heavy objects. Bending over to lift something instead of crouching and using your legs puts a huge amount of stress on the vertebrae of your back, and can contribute to back problems later in life. It also forces you to use only your arms to lift, instead of utilizing the full strength of your core and legs to help. Any time you pick something up off the ground, keep your back straight and crouch instead of bending over – your body will thank you!

E-waste Removal in Contra Costa

Junk King Contra Costa

Taking out the trash has certainly become a bit more complicated in recent years. A couple decades ago, most households most likely simply threw all of their e-waste into the same trash can before eventually hauling that trash out to the curb every week. Today, however, most waste management companies have strict rules and regulations about what types of waste can be taken away. If your local city or town has a recycling operation, you might even have to separate your waste, with organic waste being picked up one day, recyclable plastics, glass, and metals being picked up a different day, and all other trash being picked up on a third day.

To make matters even more complicated, most municipal waste management companies have specific regulations for properly disposing of e-waste (electronic waste) products. In almost every instance, simply throwing away your used computer, cell phone, or other electronic appliances and devices with the regular trash is strictly prohibited. Below, we briefly explain what e-waste is, and how individuals, homeowners, and business owners can responsibly and efficiently get rid of their e-waste in the Contra Costa County.

e-waste recycling

What is Electronic Waste and Why does it Pose a Potential Threat?

E-Waste

According to Cal Recycle, e-waste is defined as “a popular, informal name for electronic products nearing the end of their useful life. Computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, and fax machines are common electronic products.” Today, there are an enormous amount of electronic products that we use daily. From the electric kettle that brews our morning coffee, to the computers, cell phones, and other “screens” that we use during our work day, to the TVs, DVDs, and stereos that help us relax and wind down once we return home, sources of e-waste can be found in every room of the home.

Unfortunately, many of the electronics and appliances we use daily have notably short lifespans. For example, the average cell phone is only used for 2.5 years before eventually being replaced. Larger appliances such as refrigerators might last for 10-12 years before also needing to be replaced while the average life expectancy of an LCD TV is between 30,000 – 60,000 hours, or 5-7 years.

When these electronic devices do eventually break down, the long list of chemicals and heavy metals that go into their manufacture pose a particular threat to both people and the surrounding environment. Many types of appliances and electronics contain toxic elements such as mercury, lead, beryllium, brominated flame retardants, and cadmium. When these electronics sent to the landfill these chemicals tend to end up in our soil, water, and air. E-waste contamination has been linked to numerous health hazards, including:

  • -Reproductive issues.
  • -Developmental problems.
  • -Damage to the immune system.
  • -Interference with regulatory hormones.
  • -Damage to the nervous system.
  • -Kidney damage.
  • -Hamper’s brain development in children.
  • -May lead to lung cancer.

California Laws on E-Waste Removal

As is often the case, the State of California was at the forefront of regulating e-waste disposal to minimize both human health and environmental effects. With the Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003, incentives have been put in place to foster cost-free recycling opportunities for consumers throughout the state. These efforts have helped to reduce illegal dumping of e-waste content and to eliminate the stockpile of waste computer monitors, TVs, and other common sources of e-waste.

The law has also helped consumers across California find ways to deal with their e-waste. This helpful site allows individuals, homeowners, and business owners to search for the nearest recycling or donation centers near you, including organizations and businesses that specifically deal with e-waste.

E-waste Removal with Junk King of Contra Costa

On the hand, if your old cell phone or computer is broken beyond repair, we will ensure that it is taken to a place where it will be properly recycled.

Professional Junk Removal in San Leandro

Did you know that the trash we throw away on a daily basis is intimately connected to the ecological threat of global climate change? Most people separate the issues of waste accumulation and greenhouse gas emissions that drive global climate change. The plastics building up in our ocean and the increasing scarcity of landfill space are considered to be a completely separate issue from global warming which is driven by burning fossil fuels for our cars, industries, and electricity generation. However, the waste issue and the global warming issue are closely related. In some instances, the trash we throw out leads directly to the emission of gasses that drive global climate change. In this short article, we outline the connection between irresponsible waste management practice and global climate change. We then offer a few simple suggestions for how residents of San Leandro, California can limit their carbon footprint by dealing with their junk in a more responsible manner.

The Connections between Consumerism and Global Climate Change

Every time we purchase something, that item comes with a history of greenhouse gas emissions that arise from the usually long and complicated supply lines. The raw materials that make up the consumer item were mined from the Earth using energy intensive processes that most likely rely on the burning of fossil fuels. The manufacturing process and the subsequent packaging for the product (most likely from plastic) also adds to the carbon footprint of the item. Depending on where the item was made or produced, it also most likely has a sizeable transportation footprint as it is shipped around the world before eventually ending up in your shopping cart or in front of your front door.

According to a 2015 study, “the production and use of household goods and services was responsible for 60 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Producing all these things generates climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions.” Perhaps even more worrisome is the fact that of all the consumer items we purchase, only one percent of “stuff” is still in use six months from its purchase. The vast majority of that stuff ends up in landfills where it continues to contribute to even more greenhouse gas emissions.

The Issue of Landfill Gas

Landfills are obviously an unsightly part of our landscape. The waste management companies that deal with our trash spend an enormous amount of money burying and hiding the trash that individuals and businesses accumulate. One of the pressing issues associated with landfills is the growing scarcity of suitable places to essentially bury our trash. In the State of California, we currently have 55 operational landfills, though almost 250 known landfills have already been filled to capacity and closed down. In the immediate future, then, finding the space to continue to bury our trash will be an increasingly urgent issue.

Even if we are able to find the needed space to bury our trash, landfill gas, which is mostly methane, is another serious environmental issue associated with waste management. Landfill gas is a natural spin-off of the decay process and is composed of about 50 percent methane. Methane gas, like carbon dioxide, has the ability to trap the heat of the sun and thus leads to the warming of our atmosphere. The Environmental Defense Fund states that methane emissions are currently responsible for about 25 percent of all human-made global warming that we are experiencing.

Methane gas is much more potent than other greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, methane has a global warming potential of thirty-four on a 100-year time scale. This rating means that methane gas is 34 times more potent of a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide over 100 years. However, methane gas breaks down in the atmosphere relatively quickly, usually over 20 years or so. So, methane has a high global warming potential and can be 86 times more potent than carbon dioxide emissions over twenty years. Most greenhouse gas reduction targets urge nations and industries to drastically cut their emissions within the next two to three decades. In the short run, the potency of methane emissions especially concerns, as these emissions could push us over a dangerous threshold.

Most of the methane emissions from landfills arise due to the combination of inorganic and organic waste. Homeowners who do not separate, compost, or recycle their organic waste such as kitchen scraps or yard waste are thus directly contributing to large amounts of methane emissions emitted from our local landfills. In fact, the city of San Leandro finds that over 1,540 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions are caused by trash thrown into landfills.

yard waste removal guide

What Can You Do?

Okay, so if buying stuff and subsequently throwing it away leads to the greenhouse gas emissions that are driving global climate change, what exactly can I do? Firstly, making an effort to purchase durable items that will last a lifetime is one strategy to reduce consumer-related carbon emissions. Secondly, simply taking the time to separate your organic and inorganic trash can drastically reduce the methane emissions that stem from local landfills. If you don’t have space in your backyard for a small compost pile, the city of San Leandro offers unlimited collection of weekly yard trimmings and food scrap recycling collections (what you put into the green cart).

Lastly, making an effort to recycle the bulky items that we throw away is another way to lower our carbon footprint. Junk King of Contra Costa is the leading company for junk removal in San Leandro. Unlike other waste management and junk removal businesses, we have a huge network of connections with recycling companies, thrift stores, donation centers, and other organizations that allow us to either recycle, donate, or reuse at least 60 percent of the junk that we pick up.

Professional Junk Removal Services for Contra Costa

Junk king worer alongside junk king truck

Did you know that there were over 1.1 million people living in Contra Costa County in 2019? That´s almost double the amount of people that we had back in 1980. Of course, we understand. With our parks and great location just outside San Francisco it shouldn’t come as a surprise that so many people want to move here. Unfortunately, as more and more people flock to Contra Costa County, there are a series of problems that come with this surging demographic trend. Among one of the problems we face is how to deal with the increasing amount of trash that our growing population creates.

Double the amount of people should amount to double the amount of trash. However, as our consumer habits and trends grow, the amount of waste created by individuals and businesses is significantly higher than in the past. Where we put all that trash is a serious problem that needs to be dealt with.

In 2018, there was concern that waste dumped at a Contra Costa County landfill from the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard might have potentially contained radioactive material. While the final audit determined that it was unlikely that radioactive waste made its way into the landfill in our county, the scare itself goes to show that dealing with the enormous amount of waste we create needs to be taken seriously.

Fortunately, for residents and business owners in Contra Costa County, Junk King of Contra Costa offers professional, efficient, and affordable junk removal services to help you get rid of your junk in a responsible manner.

New call-to-actionWhat Junk King Contra Costa Offers

So why exactly should you choose Junk King Contra Costa to get rid of your junk?

Firstly, illegal dumping in Contra Costa County is an illegal and punishable offense. Illegal dumps often attract more waste, including potentially hazardous wastes and chemicals. Most local waste collection companies do not pick up bulky items like carpeting, large furniture, or other household hazardous wastes.

Illegal dumping is not only a public health hazard, but it also leads to increased costs for local government and industry associated with continuous clearing of illegally dumped wastes. According to the county government: “In the past years, the Contra Costa County has spent up to one million dollars per year on cleanup, hauling, and disposal associated with illegal dumping. Without adequate revenue, the funding available to establish and maintain effective illegal dumping prevention programs is limited. These costs may be passed along to residents in the form of higher service fees or property taxes.” Of course, if you are found dumping your waste illegally, you can also expect a sizeable fee.

e-waste recycling

Junk King of Contra Costa offers an efficient (and legal) way to get rid of almost all of your bulky junk items, including hot tubs, refrigerators, freezers, mattresses, computers and other “e-waste” items, TV´s, appliances, old furniture, yard waste, and more. Not only do we allow you to easily clear out space in your home, but we also make every effort to make sure that your junk items stay out of the landfills in our county that are quickly approaching maximum capacity.

Our owner Krishna Vepa started a Junk King franchise because due to his concern about the environment. Krishna has previous professional experience in renewables and recycling in the Hi Tech Industry. This experience has permitted Junk King of Contra Costa to develop a series of relationships with dozens of recycling organizations. We also deliver many of the used items we pick up to thrift stores, donations centers, and other similar organizations. Our solid commitment to the environment allows us to recycle or reuse 60 percent or more of the junk items that we pick up from our clients.

Another reason to choose Junk King of Contra Costa is because our customer service is second to none. We are proud to have a great rating on Yelp. One of our most recent customer reviews states

“Had a great experience using Junk King today. My family was holding on to old couches and other furniture for months. Called Junk King a few days before to set up an appointment and it’s great to have had availability for a pick up today – on a Saturday no less. Quincy and Donzell were on time, friendly, moved very quickly and were very professional. They had masks on the whole time, which I appreciated.  I’m grateful for their help and their fair estimate to take all the crap we had.  We are enjoying the extra space we have now and should have called them sooner! Thanks also to the dispatcher, Rebecca, who was friendly and professional with setting up the appointment and taking care of the logistics. I’m sure I’ll be reaching out again after we declutter.”

Junk Contra Costa Climbs Up For Attic Junk Removal

There aren’t many homes in Southern California with basements. That is more of an east coast kind of design feature. Of course, if you can’t go down then why not go up? That is why you’ll find many homes with attic spaces. Some of these spaces are accessed by pull down stairs. Usually that means these areas are meant exclusively for storage. The low ceilings wouldn’t work for anything else. The homes with a walkup attic, are also used for storage. And like many basements back east, the attics are left unfinished. Whether you have a walk up or ladder access attic, the question becomes are you getting the most out of that space? The answer could depend on how much junk you have up there? Are you ready for some quality attic junk removal? Then gives the pros from Junk King a call.

Attic_Organized_3

The first thing you have to know about hiring a Junk King crew is that they don’t mind climbing stairs. Often it is easier to take something up to the attic than bring it down. That is why some much of the clutter up there has been long forgotten. You might need to make a trip up there to see just what you want to toss out. After that, Junk King will do all the climbing. You don’t have to feel guilty about making them make those trips. This is why you’re hiring them.

Your attic junk removal session doesn’t have to be the only reason for hiring Junk King. As long as you’ve got that crew and truck, why not fill it with stuff from every floor in your home! It doesn’t matter if you want to get rid of an old desktop computer or a bedroom headboard. Junk King will make sure that stuffs safely leaves your home.

As they load up all your stuff, the crews will be on the lookout for any item that might be repurposed or recycled. This is how they get rid of the stuff they collect. Junk King would rather go out of their way to make a drop off to a church thrift story or recycling facility as opposed to making a “deposit” into a landfill. Dumping in a landfill is not going to do anybody any good. That is just how Junk King operates. When you need complete attic junk removal and home decluttering, Junk King is the team to hire.
